Pelosi Palaver
CBS News ^ | May 14, 2009 | by Andrew Cohen

Let’s assume the worst about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her rough re-entry into the national debate over Bush Administration torture tactics. Even though she vigorously disputes this, let’s assume that she knew back in 2002 that the Central Intelligence Agency was performing water-boarding and other “enhanced” interrogation tactics upon terror suspects. Let’s assume Rep. Pelosi said nothing for years even as those policies crumbled under the weight of their own illegalities and immoralities.

This makes her a hypocrite, a coward and probably a liar (not exactly a new or rare trifecta in Washington). It neutralizes her as a weapon the Democrats may choose to employ as some (but not all) Republicans eagerly seek to distance themselves from the disastrous policy. It paints her as part of the problem and not part of the solution, which is the kinder way of saying what many GOP leaders were saying about Pelosi as the week wore on. It also helps educate us all about the routine interaction between parties on sensitive intelligence matters. [snip]

Nor is it good enough for Pelosi to continue to trash the CIA as a way of dealing with her own complicity in the affair. Instead, she should declare that she’ll be first in line to testify before any such torture commission and will do all in her power to make sure that one gets created. Think that’s going to happen? Me neither.

Or she and the Dems could just admit that a tough interrogation is not torture, that in war-time your intelligence agencies have to do whatever it takes to obtain information and if you’ve sent these men into war you have a responsibility to stand behind them whichever way the political winds blow. They could just admit that and we could move on.

Exactly...if CBS is turning on this B*tch, she’s in trouble. Best for the Dems if they get this behind them now.

Wanna bet they don’t?

“...Andrew Cohen is CBS News’ Chief Legal Analyst and Legal Editor...”

It should read: “Andrew Cohen is CBS News’ Chief LIBERAL Legal Analyst and LIBERAL Legal Editor”. This item (read the whole thing) could just as easily have been written by a spokesperson for the ACLU.

Do we expect a new crisis to develop diverting attention or will Obama throw her under the bus?

Sorry to say he got his start as a lawyer in Denver offering commentary on the Oklahoma City bombing trial. As you can tell, he's been completely captured by the left wing media.

It's interesting, though, that a card carrying member of the lefty media is ready to throw Nan under the bus.

what Pelosi’s complicit silence does not do is exonerate the men who drafted the torture memos and the men and women who authorized them to do so. Their degree of culpability for this mess is an order of magnitude more profound than is Pelosi’s.

Exactly. Only the opposite. They were doing the job they were asked to do—research and argument—by the decision-making body of which she was an influential member. The responsibility is squarely hers.

Not that a dip in the CIA swimming pool, upside-down, is actually torture. If they keep their limbs and fingernails, it's not torture.

“They could just admit that and we could move on.”

Or Boehner can walk into Obama’s office and say that if Pelosi is around after the weekend, they could kiss off what little support they are going to get for Commiecare.

Maybe that’s another reason why she stuttered so much today in her news conference!

They'd rather chew their arms off.
