Soy Protein Used in "Natural" Foods Bathed in Toxic Solvent Hexane
Natural News ^

Posted on 05/20/2009 12:29:09 PM PDT by Scythian

Virtually all "protein bars" on the market today are made with soy protein. Many infant formula products are also made with soy protein, and thousands of vegetarian products (veggie burgers, veggie cheese, "natural" food bars, etc.) are made with soy protein. That soy protein is almost always described as safe and "natural" by the companies using it. But there's a dirty little secret the soy product industry doesn't want you to know: Much of the "natural" soy protein used in foods today is bathed in a toxic, explosive chemical solvent known as hexane.

To determine the true extent of this hexane contamination, NaturalNews joined forces with the Cornucopia Institute (www.Cornucopia.org) to conduct testing of hexane residues in soy meal and soy grits using FDA-approved and USDA-approved laboratories. The Cornucopia Institute performed the bulk of this effort, and NaturalNews provided funding to help cover laboratory costs.

The results proved to be worrisome: Hexane residues of 21ppm were discovered in soy meal commonly used to produce soy protein for infant formula, protein bars and vegetarian food products.

These laboratory results appear to indicate that consumers who purchase common soy products might be exposing themselves (and their children) to residues of the toxic chemical HEXANE -- a neurotoxic substance produced as a byproduct of gasoline refining.

Did you know that the production of paints and acids utilizes a toxic solvent known as dihydrogen monoxide? This solvent kills thousands of people every year who, not recognizing its toxicity, overdose on it.

There was a link that took me to another anti-soy article. From that, this quote:
“Not only are all GM products unhealthy to humans and animals but also to the normal plants that grow in the surrounding area, due to the natural process of winds causing cross-pollination, resulting in mutated species of what were once natural variations of plants.”

And,,, I ain’t givin’ up my Ma Bo Tofu!

It’s already been banned. People were using it improperly and dying. I used it for years for anarobic excercise and it worked great. The chinese have used mahuang for thousands of years. Personal responsibility is no longer recognized in America. Therefore, people can use it improperly, die, and their family can successfully sue the companies that produce it.

In all seriousness, we gave our son soy formula because the milk was hard for him to digest. I wonder if there are any repercussions known?

You're OK if you eat the whole soybean, of some sorta girlie food made from the whole bean.

Hexane is an astringent used in the oil/meal extraction process. The bean is ground up and washed with hexane. The hexane removes the oil and the solution is then heated causing the hexane to evaporate, leaving only the oil (and meal). The hexane is recaptured (except for 23 parts per million, apparently) and the whole process starts over.

No, no, relax. Hexane is natural and natural things don’t hurt you.

One bad thing about hexane is it does contain carbon, which as you know is killing Gaea.

Thanks for that. I’m using soy isoflavones in pill form and a quick net search says the process does use hexane. I’ll have to look around to see if a good approximation can be had using whole beans or soy milk.

We have let the food industry turn our food into poison

Hyperbole, thy name is Scythian. I can't imagine what you're eating if your goal is to avoid foods that contain toxins/carcinogens. If you'd make a list I'd be happy to point out the various poisons you're consuming when eating those foods. I'd bet that more than half of what you regularly consume has some trace amounts of chemicals that in large quantities would be lethal.

Hexane tolerance is, IIRC, 25 parts per million. This article (bathed in hexane LOL) is nonsense. Do you eat roasted meats? Drink coffee? Ever consume chocolate that's been cooked? If you cook bacon too long you'll create the most carcinogenic compound known to man. The compounds created by heating these products are highly toxic and their chemical structures would keep you from sleeping at night. Orange juice is healthy and safe, right? It is except for the limonene that is highly toxic and is used as paint stripper. Potatoes are good for you, right? Except that they contain arsenic. Apples are good for you for sure. Just watch out for the acetaldehyde. Strawberries aren't even safe in your toxin free world. I'm sure Natural News would claim alfalfa sprouts are safe. Maybe they've never heard of canavine.

The list created by Adams is a joke. He's just another chemicalphobe who's found a way to turn his phobia into cash. I'm glad you've gotten your condition under control but I really can't imagine what you're eating if your goal is to completely avoid poisons in your food.

Every week there’s a new “OH MY GOD WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE!” chemical, drug, disease, etc. thrown out by some group or other.

Certainly you can understand that there are those of us who refuse to get into a lather over each newly discovered death sentence we’re handed by these people.

Fear mongering gets stale after a few decades of the same old song and dance.

Thanks very much for the update. I was puzzlin’ over it :)

I eat soy instead of other grains a lot of the time due to a medical condition.

Even though I don’t adore it, I don’t know what we would eat if not for soy.

“I eat soy instead of other grains”

Soy is not a grain. It’s a “legume” — basically a simple fruit or pea.
