If the Fairtax passed it would tax (not eliminate) almost all of those taxes/fees an additional 30%.

In the Chicago area, the city and most suburbs charge a vehicle sticker tax, which is in addition to the state license plate. The sticker has to be displayed in the windshield and can run from $10-$50 per year, depending on how much the village feels it can charge. This is a per-vehicle tax each year.

My village dropped the vehicle sticker tax about the same time they imposed an extra tax on cell phones. So now, instead of paying $30 per year for 2 vehicle stickers, I pay about $75 per year in cell phone taxes.

A long time, when I first moved out of Chicago and into a local suburb, the village I moved into had a decision to make. The fees collected from those vehicle stickers was not enough to cover the payroll of the person the village hired to distribute the stickers. So, they raised the fee. That's when I first realized that I was an advocate of small government.

Wonder what they call this tax?

You probably didn't notice this little provision inserted into the Heroes Act of 2008, passed by Congress on June 17.

The headlines in the press release about the law were about the increased benefits for veterans and families of deceased military.

But Richard Kohan of Price WaterhouseCoopers drew my attention to one section of the act -- the portion that states anyone voluntarily giving up his or her citizenship will be taxed on ALL of his assets as if he or she had sold them -- paying capital gains on assets that have increased in value, even though they have not been sold!

Here is the link for that one: Chicago-Sun Jun 30, 2008

Also, are ex-patriot taxes separately named?
