A Long Island store owner who came face-to-face with a bat-wielding robber whipped out a shotgun in self-defense -- then showed the down-on-his-luck thief the ultimate sign of compassion by handing him $40 and a loaf of bread, according to a bizarre new video made public today.

Mohammad Sohail was working the register at his store in Shirley on May 21 at 12:35 a.m. when a man walked in carrying a bat and demanded cash.

But once Sohail whipped out his shotgun, the would-be robber immediately dropped to his knees and began begging for forgiveness -- claiming that the bad economy had pushed him to the edge.

"He started crying," Sohail told Newsday. "He was saying: 'I have no money. I have no food. I have no job. I have to take care of my family.'"

God was with everybody on this one. With the robber, in that he didn’t get shot and killed, and with the storekeeper, who found compassion and understanding in a situation that might have turned out in bloodshed.

What pushed him to his knees, was the shotgun.

He should be shot on principle, just for trying to rob a store with a Louisville Slugger then at least the human gene pool would benefit.

If I were in the store (after the robber fell to his knees sobbing), I would have told him to fill up a basket or cart with food for his family, and I’d pay for it.

Bingo.

I'd rather be a hammer than a nail.

Or pushed to his knees by a resolve to his fate of death because to go on living was (in his state of mind) much harder than the easy way out. Death by Clerk!

The robber was probably also named Mohammed.

The ironic thing is the robber probably could have gone in and asked the man for food for his family and he would have been given it. Plus, he wouldn’t have had to wash out his pants when he got home.

You said — He should be shot on principle, just for trying to rob a store with a Louisville Slugger then at least the human gene pool would benefit.

According to God, we should all be killed, on principle, because all of the human race (the Bible says every last single person) is no better than filthy rags..., and every last single person deserves the *death sentence*...

So, that’s sort of like the pot calling the kettle black... :-)

What pushed him to his knees, was the shotgun.

And what lifted him up again...

Unless it has changed in the past 20 years, I seem to remember Shirley as being a rather trashy place full of Springer show rejects. Not quite Rockaway 116 but still pretty bad in that regard.

Without the shotgun the story is as follows:

Man steals a carton of cigarettes and 5 sticks of beef jerky, then beats hard working immigrant to death with baseball bat.

What a good man the store owner is!!!
Lord Love him and many blessings be on his head.

A lucky robber met a good man. And human nature shines!

Let’s say he clubbed you before he got to the counter. Still gonna buy him some chili dogs and Dr. Pepper?

I like to think that’s what I would have done too.

But there also would have been a warning from me to never ever again raise a weapon at me or come into my store again - under threat of unspecified extremely painful consequences.

After that, I’d probably have gotten wobbly knees and had to sit down for a while.

I forgot to add that the gun would always be on him, just in case.
