LONG ISLAND STORE OWNER GIVES WOULD-BE ROBBER $40, FOOD
nypost.com ^ | June 2, 2009 | POST STAFF REPORT

A Long Island store owner who came face-to-face with a bat-wielding robber whipped out a shotgun in self-defense -- then showed the down-on-his-luck thief the ultimate sign of compassion by handing him $40 and a loaf of bread, according to a bizarre new video made public today.

Mohammad Sohail was working the register at his store in Shirley on May 21 at 12:35 a.m. when a man walked in carrying a bat and demanded cash.

But once Sohail whipped out his shotgun, the would-be robber immediately dropped to his knees and began begging for forgiveness -- claiming that the bad economy had pushed him to the edge.

"He started crying," Sohail told Newsday. "He was saying: 'I have no money. I have no food. I have no job. I have to take care of my family.'"

Entirely different story and result. I would have shot him in the leg and let the boys in Block C enjoy him.

The book “Les Miserables” involves a “civilized” French system that led to a starving public.

The book “Atlas Shruged” describes a similar system — in
America — and includes a suggested amendment to “an ancient document.”

“Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of production and trade …”

Unless it has changed in the past 20 years, I seem to remember Shirley as being a rather trashy place full of Springer show rejects. Not quite Rockaway 116 but still pretty bad in that regard.

What makes Rockaway 116 trashy are the DFD's that come from other parts of the city during the summer. The locals are wonderful!

Reminds me of Jean Valjean and Bishop Myriel

“Forget not, never forget that you have promised me to use this silver to become an honest man.... Jean Valjean, my brother: you belong no longer to evil, but to good. It is your soul that I am buying for you. I withdraw it from dark thoughts and from the spirit of perdition, and I give it to God!”

Rockaway 117th Street (and indeed most streets west of 116th Street) have some BEAUTIFUL houses! You live in a highly underrated block.

Beach 116th Street has improved a little since they shut down the flophouses (although the shell of one near the beach is still there for some reason). I also noticed a steakhouse has opened, for some reason called "Belle Harbor Steakhouse" even though Belle Harbor is some blocks to the west.

Met some scary folks in a certain bar on Beach 116th Street, but they are nowhere near as odd as the folks who live in Broad Channel.

BTW: You may have seen many of my GF's countrywomen on Beach 117th street wearing g-strings and speaking Portuguese.

The robber was completely at the mercy of the store-owner, in more ways than one. His life could easily have ended, either by being shot or by being locked up for decades.

The store-owner showed great compassion.

I pray that the man realizes what a gift he has been given and acts in accordance with the mercy he himself has been shown.

You got it. We’ve seen that scenario WAY too many times to believe any other outcome would have occurred.
