Ticket for parking on grass in my own yard(PARKING TICKET)

Posted on 06/10/2009 6:29:47 PM PDT by Jessica2677

Does anyone know if this is legal? We just got a parking ticket for parking in the grass in our own yard. The ticket says "can not park on grass or unpaved area(even if your own yard). I swear to god this is what the ticket says and its a $50 ticket that doubles to $100 then doubles to $200 Does anyone know anything about this law????

Maryland is a crazy, leftist state.

The only thing I can think of that might justify such a ticket is that in most states there is a public right-of-way that extends from the center of the road a certain distance into your yard. In Vermont, I think it’s 25 feet from the center of a class 3 road like the one we’re on.

There’s no rule here about parking on your own grass, but it is technically a public right-of-way. Probably the same or similar in Maryland.

Then there’s the whole crazy business of zoning laws, which can regulate what is allowed to be on a lawn. No clothes lines allowed, for instance, in many housing areas, although clothes lines are a good way to save energy.

It’s a city by city thing. Sometimes neighborhood by neighborhood.

I’ve never heard of not being able to park on the grass, but I’ve heard of not being allowed to park on the street, or not being allowed to park in such a way that your car blocks pedestrians from walking on the sidewalk. This means that if your car is in your driveway but a pedestrian on the sidewalk must walk around your car to get from the sidewalk on the left of your driveway to the sidewalk on the right of your driveway...you are in violation. You don’t actually have to be parked on the sidewalk to get busted for this violation.

Some neighborhoods won’t even let you park in your own driveway PERIOD. You MUST park in your garage.

You can't. They have the right to come on to your property to check out a violation.

We had a time with one of our local code people over a upright freezer we had in the carport. They kept leaving us notices that we had to take the door off. We pointed out that the rest of the code stated that being locked (which it was) was another option.

Finally told the city that we were going to sue them for harassment if they didn't stop. They stopped.

Not only do I park my truck on the grass from time to time, I also park my tractor there also.

Was your car parked on cinder blocks?

I agree with a lot of posters, what the heck are you doing parking on the grass? I don’t care if it’s yours or Yankee Stadium. It’s a trailer trash habit that just devalues your home and the community. Double park if you must, but never ever park or let someone park on your grass( exception is if you have a lot of property behind the house that will hide the car from view.

There is no sidewalk....there are bushes that line the front of the yard and then about 30 feet and you your at my front door...the car is parked in between the bushes and the house on our property.

With all due respect, parking in a front lawn for any period of time will trash up a neighborhood. I don’t have any idea about your situation, but in most cases the rule makes a lot of sense and reflects a common courtesy that should be extended whether or not there is an ordinance prohibiting it. I am surprised you weren’t given a warning though.

I've had the San Diego Police Department ticket my Porsched 914 parked in my driveway. It had current registration, insurance and was spit polish clean. It was declared a "nuisance". The local "meter maid" was having trouble meeting quotas, so multiple people in the neighborhood were targeted. I just parked the car in the garage. That "fixed" the problem. I'm pretty sure parking on the lawn would have drawn a similar ticket, but in that case, it would have been justified. The neighborhood shouldn't be turned into a trashy site with cars on bricks on the front lawn.

See Parking Crackdown Means Hefty Fines. Remember this at the ballot box and remind your neighbors.

Here in Tampa it’s a big no-no. I’ve called code on people a few times (after warning them myself of course).

Those kinds of tickets are usually only written if a neighbor calls in and complains. Cops don’t really have time to go driving around looking for cars parked on someones own lawn.

Find out who is doing the complaining and let them know you know what they did.

Excuse me, not everyone that CAN park on the grass is trailertrash. If it is mine I’ll park it anywhere I want.
