TEHRAN, Iran - Shots were fired Monday at a rally by pro-reform presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, apparently by pro-government militia.

An AP photographer said militia fired at the opposition protesters, killing at least on person.

"There has been sporadic shooting out there ... I can see people running here," added a reporter of Iran's English-language Press TV.

What exactly do you want Obama to do? If he openly encourages the protesters, that could backfire as they would be labeled as tools of the US.

You know, I have to agree. The last thing I want is Zer0 blowing his big bazoo about this and taint this brave movement.

The Iranian people should own this battle, and their strength and courage should inspire us all. God bless you, Iranian people, our hearts are with you!

He could just call for peaceful protest from the population towards the failed elections. Firmly come out against the heavy handed oppression of the regime. He needs to state somehow that the elections are failed. Let the protesters know, through the world media, that we are behind them. Let the Mullah’s know the world is watching. Why walk on eggshells. They are our enemy. They don’t pretend, we shouldn’t either. We should do whatever we can to put the heat on those crazies. At some point in the future we will wish we were as hostile to them as we could be. No matter what we do they will hate us. Let’s give a good reason to hate us. I know it will make me feel better

Certainly if VictoryGal feels the need to say this why shouldn't our President?

Your post deserves many bumps!! Especially since liberals are calling the current president of Iran (allahoffwithyourhead or whatever his name is) a man just like GW Bush-an election stealer. (What crap)

Liberals are dirtbags.

President Bush was not a coward...uhbama is a Muslim.

Muslims = cowards. (Afraid of difference of opinion, afraid of women, afraid of openness and afraid of fun.)

Muslims = cowards, mostly, because they attach bombs to little children to turn them into killing machines...grown sick men and women do this in the Muslim world.

AND Muslims have no hesitation when it comes to slaughtering UNARMED, UNSUSPECTING innocents in this world (take 9/11)- they are the supreme cowards of this world.

That was a huge protest! The article says the numbers were in the hundreds of thousands and the crowd stretched for FIVE MILES. Possible shootings in other areas of northern Tehran:

The shooting was followed by reports from residents of three neighborhoods in northern Tehran who said shooting was heard there as well.

Seems the Iranian police/militia also stormed Tehran University last night, arresting protesting students.

Hard-line militia volunteers loyal to the Revolutionary Guard stormed the dormitories, ransacking student rooms and smashing computers and furniture with axes and wooden sticks, Akbar said.

Before leaving around 4 a.m., the police took away memory cards and computer software material, Akbar said, adding that dozens of students were arrested.

Exactly.

Obama will be dumped on around here whatever he does. That's Rule # 1. He gave a speech in Cairo a couple of weeks back and everyone said STFU!

The little Holocaust-denying creep and his clerical backers would love to be able to label this as an American-inspired interference in Iranian politics and use it as a rallying cry. We need to maintain a public distance from this chaos while secretly doing what we can to make life as miserable as possible for Khamenei and his henchmen.

was just over on democratic underground. Bunch of insensitive fascist over there - seem to have no concern about the students/reformers safety. No statements of support - just more bush bashing... they must all be brainwashed.

What exactly do you want Obama to do? If he openly encourages the protesters, that could backfire as they would be labeled as tools of the US. I think being quiet publicly is the best way to go ...

He could say something like this...

Radio FARDA | President Bush: My message to the young in Iran is that someday your society will be free. And it will be a blessed time for you. My message to the women of Iran is that the women of America share your deep desire for children to grow up in a hopeful society and to live in peace...Well, I think the people of Iran are going to have to come to the conclusion that a free country is in their interest. We, of course, support freedom movements all around the world. We are supporting a freedom movement on the Iranian border, in Iraq. We are promoting and helping the Iraqis develop a free society. By the way, a free Iraq will help the Iranians seek the blessings of a free society. There's no doubt in my mind that the women will be leading freedom movements in Iran and elsewhere, and the role of the United States is to provide moral support and other support without undermining their cause.

THANK you, Free Reign!!

It seems some people have forgotten that not too long ago, we had a REAL President, with REAL values, and REAL courage.

The Iranian people are on their own in their fight for freedom with Obama in the WH, and this is a tragedy.

That sounds like something that happened in the uprising in 1999. There were students beaten and pushed out of windows. Wonder if they are referring to 1999 or if it’s happening again at Tehran University.

It's worth noting that those laudable words of Bush were made at a time of civil calm in Iran. Whether he would make them now and appear to be fomenting revolution at a time when there is civil instability is another question.

Cheering from the sidelines while Iran's rulers ponder how to cope with this upheaval is simply inviting them to crack down hard.

It is most likely because of those words that the freedom loving people of Iran held out the hope that they would be supported in their quest for freedom, and have the courage to fight for it right now.

President Bush believes in the freedom of oppressed people, and was always willing to speak up for and fight for it.

He may voice the sentiment in slightly different words, but the idea that he would not voice them at all is inconsistent with who he is and how he conducted himself throughout his eight years in office.

In other words - Obama should be making statements right now supporting the rights of the Iranian people.
