'Fire Dave!': Crowd lines up to protest Letterman's 'Late Show' Palin joke
New York Daily News ^ | June 16, 2009 | Irving Dejohn

An apology from David Letterman was good enough for Sarah Palin - but not for protesters who demanded the late night host's dismissal Tuesday at a Broadway demonstration.

"Fire Dave! Fire Dave!" the crowd of about 50 protesters chanted as Letterman fans filtered into the Ed Sullivan Theater for the show's taping.

"I hope to have him see the light," said demonstrator Josephine Sarnok, 59, of Newark. "I think it was over the line."

BettyJean Kling, 61, accused Letterman of using the Alaska governor's family to boost his ratings. She stood by a large plywood sign with the words "Fire the pervert" spray-painted across the front.

The demonstration came hours after Palin accepted Letterman's Monday night apology for what he described as "a bad joke ... a joke that was beyond flawed."

The governor released a statement saying she accepted the mea culpa "on behalf of all young women, like my daughters, who hope men who 'joke' about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve."

Letterman sparked the controversy with a crack about Palin's visit to Yankee Stadium last week. The one-time GOP vice-presidential candidate attended the game with her 14-year-old daughter, Willow.

Letterman - who initially said he was referring to 18-year-old Bristol Palin - said the teen "was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez" during the seventh inning.

Bristol Palin became a single mom in December when she delivered son Tripp

I just voted to have Dave fired. But he probably won’t get the punishment that Imus did.

Protestors should do their homework, David Letterman started his own production company just so CBS COULDN’T fire him for something he said.

Poll: 64% in favor of firing him, but doesn’t indicate total votes.

Hold Dave to the standards the rest of us are held to.

If my company's HR handled Letterman's infraction he'd be off property long before now.

No, No, she had to do it, because if she hadn’t it would have looked bad. I am glad that she accepted the apology, even though we all know she doesn’t really accept it. What was she supposed to say “Ok everyone, off with his head” she knows that we, who support her, won’t let Letterman get away with this and she knows it. She knows we got her back.

Where do you see him before 11 p.m., or whatever time he’s on? Never watch him.

Wasn’t there a thread here earlier today or another article somewhere that I read that he had apologized to a comedien’s mother (after the comedien passed away)for cutting his act out of his show? His apology at that time ended exactly like the one he issued last night - “I’ll try to do better next time” or some such garbage.

Maybe I’ll find it somewhere else if it’s not on FR.

I live in Los Angeles. I have never watched Letterman and I NEVER will. I always found him to be creepy, this just confirms it. I am not really into any of those so-called comedy programs at night, I don’t find any of them funny

The jackass, in his so-called apology, said that the joke the he told, that he didn’t write, was misunderstood and that he takes responsibility for that? Earth to jackass-— your slanderous remarks about the Palin family were not a joke and were not misunderstood. They were statements of fact that came from your lips. You are an embarrassment and need to go.......

LOVE your name (obviously!) and agree with you, but with this additional thought. Even if not demanded by political calculations, Sarah Palin would accept the apology and forgive, as distasteful as it may be. She’s an uncompromising Christian first; everything else is secondary...which is why she has been honored and elevated from local PTA to a governorship and the threshold of the highest offices in the land. Her heart is pure and strong. Divine grace is apparent in her life. And we love her dearly and will do whatever we can to support and defend her.

She has more class in her pinky finger then any of these libs have in their entire body. I don’t know how she is able to handle all the crap thrown at her on a daily basis. I couldn’t handle 5 percent of the hell she has had to go through. She has such amazing grace. God Bless her

A big ‘hell yeah!’ and amen to that. God has blessed her big time, and I pray that He will bless all of us with her service on the national level. Then again, if she runs for no other office the rest of her life, she has already had a huge positive impact on all of us. (But we desire more....)
