Skip to comments.EXCLUSIVE: Minn. lawmaker vows not to complete Census - (ALL questions must be answered?)
Posted on 06/19/2009 7:33:29 AM PDT by GeorgiaDawg32
Outspoken Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann says she's so worried that information from next year's national census will be abused that she will refuse to fill out anything more than the number of people in her household.
In an interview Wednesday morning with The Washington Times "America's Morning News," Mrs. Bachmann, Minnesota Republican, said the questions have become "very intricate, very personal" and she also fears ACORN, the community organizing group that came under fire for its voter registration efforts last year, will be part of the Census Bureau's door-to-door information collection efforts.
Shelly Lowe, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Census Bureau, said Mrs. Bachmann is "misreading" the law.

“Shelly Lowe, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Census Bureau, said Mrs. Bachmann is “misreading” the law.”
Well, that’s a nice reassurance. I’m sure I can rely upon my local ACORN representative/census taker to not “misread” the law. They do have a track record of painstaking attention to legality, you know. /s/
I truly believe each and every conservative should tell them to come back with a court order if they want us to give them census data ...
Love Michelle she used to be my representative until we moved last year she is a riot she called bo’s government a Gang Sta government video is here...
Wow, is it that time again? I got the long form last time and battled the Bureau endlessly when I refused to let them know how many toilets were in my house (amongst other data).
Can we take the Fifth?
Nothing but number of people in the house from me.
same here..nothing but number of people..
“I have no recollection of the number of toilets in my house”
“I have no recollection”
It worked for Hillary
Once again, the most courageous conservative leaders continue to be women.Who’d a thunk. Ain’t what you had in mind, is it NOW?
If they ask for more I will simply tell them it is none of their business and they either take the information I am willing to give, or they can take none.
If they press the issue, I will order them off my property and call the Sheriff. Out here in small town Idaho...if they come...they will find that the Sheriff here understands and abides his duty to the people in this community.
TITLE 13 - CENSUS
CHAPTER 7 - OFFENSES AND PENALTIES
SUBCHAPTER II - OTHER PERSONS
Sec. 221. Refusal or neglect to answer questions; false answers
(a) Whoever, being over eighteen years of age, refuses or willfully neglects, when requested by the Secretary, or by any other authorized officer or employee of the Department of Commerce or bureau or agency thereof acting under the instructions of the Secretary or authorized officer, to answer, to the best of his knowledge, any of the questions on any schedule submitted to him in connection with any census or survey provided for by subchapters I, II, IV, and V of chapter 5 of this title, applying to himself or to the family to which he belongs or is related, or to the farm or farms of which he or his family is the occupant, shall be fined not more than $100.
(b) Whoever, when answering questions described in subsection (a) of this section, and under the conditions or circumstances described in such subsection, willfully gives any answer that is false, shall be fined not more than $500.
THEy will get the number of people in my home - and I will also answer my race - AMERICAN.
I’ve never answered these question other than how many people are in the household. This has been since 1970, and never once has there been a followup.
"2 adults". Signed it. Sent it back.
Not a peep out of 'em.
This time, they'll get "2 adults. 2 children."
Me too, after that they sent some punk kid to my door and I told him number of peeps and bye,bye......
I had some oldie flunkie calling me every other night, trying to get me to redo it. I kept refusing. He asked to set up an appointment so he could personally ask me all the questions. I told him that he wasn't welcome on my property. I answered the constitutionally mandated questions, and had no interest in engaging in their unconstitutional social engineering schemes.
Finally, he got pissed off and told me that there would be trouble if I didn't comply. I hung up on him.
Ten years later, still no sign of "trouble."
What nonsense. The census is for headcount purposes only. Anything else is information the government doesn’t need.
I'll check "Other" and write in "homo sapiens."
Yup. Me too.
Call it civil disobedience, defiance, a line in the sand, whatever, but I'm willing to take it as far they wish.
Last time ‘round I answered “1 adult”.
Census worker showed up not long after, and started pressing for other answers. I simply replied something like “I have given all the information required by the Constitution, and anything beyond that requires a warrant.” ‘nuff said. Guy promptly left and didn’t bother me any more.
And yes I’d pay the $100 fine.
And then go to court demanding it back.
Checked the Census website recently. Funny how it’s smothered with “our employees are sworn to keep your information secret for life under threat of extreme penalties.” Considering how some thugs threatening voters & poll workers, having been convicted for a serious federal crime, mysteriously had their charges dropped without explaination ... I’m not so convinced by warm assurances of secrecy.
Good for her. I have not answered more than the basic “who lives here” question since the first census I participated in back in the 60’s. Nuts to them.
so should i just send the $100 check in with the census forms?
Screw those commies.
Stop playing ball.
Watch their magical unicorn cloud city come falling down, off the rainbow.
BTW, guys: DO NOT LIE on the forms. Not answering is one thing, justifiable in court per delegated powers and enumerated rights. Willfully giving false information is something completely different which cannot be justified at all in court.
Do what ACORN and barry soetoro do — PLAY STUPID.
It gums up the machine, takes forever, and makes them do all kinds of work, WHICH THEY REFUSE TO DO.
The moment things require effort, the socialists quit bothering and move to the next person.
So just play dumb. Under race, put Indy 500. Then when they call you on it, say “Oh my God, what was I thinking! I meant Kentucky Derby!”
ACORN wasn't running the show. There will be intimidation this time.
Criminals threatening law abiding citizens with criminal prosecution. This is what America has come to.
Even more ironic is the fact that they are going to commit so much fraud that your answers are worthless anyway.
Inasmuch as i was born and raised in the US, I think I would answer “Native American”.
Makes me wonder if ACORN’s census collection “efforts” may spark the next “shot heard ‘round the world?”
I will not answer any census question that I consider inappropriate or none of the government’s business such as how much money I make etc.
None of their g.d. business.
We used Census data to round up the Japanese in the 40s. Once government has information there is absolutely zero restriction on how it can be used. A privacy law now can be rescinded, judged, regulated or executive ordered into ineffectiveness tomorrow.
Respondents are not required to respond to any information collection unless it displays a valid approval number from the Office of Management and Budget. This 8-digit number appears in the bottom right on the front cover of this form.
I think some ACORN type folks are threatening folks with the 'census' law for the American Community Survey, which isn't mandatory.
Really what are they gonna do? I could ge real incomptetent real fast. Beg senior moment etc.
So, it’s a $100 ticket if you refuse to answer some of the questions? I’d bet some compliant judge would read that to say $100 for each question you refused to answer, but normal humans would read it the way I just did.
I want to know why we should give information to a fake POTUS and his fake administration?
Excellent point. If needed, use it to get your $100 back. Stroke of a pen, and all that "secret" information becomes public.
A quick read of the law tells me that I am required to answer questions about me, my family, and any farm or farms I own.
There is no requirement to answer questions about my finances, my house, my toilet, my TV, my internet or phone service, my vehicles, my pets, or my furniture.
Since I don't own a farm, that pretty much leaves just family member names and ages.
Considering all legally relevant data, he is POTUS and his administration is legitimate. If you have anything to the contrary* PLEASE SHARE and use proper channels accordingly.
(* - I mean info that would stand up in court, not hearsay.)
Census worker showed up not long after, and started pressing for other answers. I simply replied something like I have given all the information required by the Constitution, and anything beyond that requires a warrant.
Why the particular interest in farms? Especially considering pending legislation which will severely regulate them! Nothin’ in the Constitution specially applies the Census to farms.
The constitutional authorization for the Census is to simply COUNT THE CITIZENRY for purposes of congressional apportionment, that is all.
If you answer any other question on the Census other than “how many people live in your household” you are a fool.
All I want is a government that gets itself out of my wallet and off my back, as the founders of this nation intended. Today that statement makes me an enemy of the state.
