France to consider banning the burka
The Telegraph UK ^ | 19 Jun 2009 | Henry Samuel

Posted on 06/19/2009 6:22:31 PM PDT by Cincinna

President Nicolas Sarkozy's government is to consider banning the burka and other Islamic clothing which French MPs claim is degrading to women.

In a move that sparked fierce debate, a group of parliamentarians called for an inquiry into the wearing of the head-to-toe Islamic veil in France and whether Muslim women who cover themselves completely in public constitute an assault on French secularism and women's rights.

In a call that won support from senior figures in Mr Sarkozy's government, they demanded that a parliamentary commission consider the fate in France of the burka, where the eyes are covered by a fabric mesh, and the niqab, which has an eye slit.

While France's Muslim Council said the proposal "stigmatised" Islam, a commission is now expected to be established on the urging of the group of 65 politicians led by André Gerin, a Communist MP. Many of the 65 MPs are members of Mr Sarkozy's Right-wing UMP party.

Mr Gerin is also mayor of the southern city of Venissieux, which has a high immigrant population and where he complains women cover themselves in "mobile prisons".

"Our politicians need to stop acting so blind," he said, describing the burka as the mark of Islamic fundamentalism not is tune with secular France.

Luc Chatel, a government spokesman, said that all the options were open, including a ban. "If it were determined that wearing the burka is a submissive act, and that it is contrary to republican principles, well naturally parliament would have to drawn the necessary conclusions," he said.

If that meant introducing new legislation, he said, "why not".

The proposal won the support of Fadela Amara, the urban affairs minister and a women's rights campaigner whose parents were Muslims. "We must do everything to stop burkas from spreading, in the name of democracy"

6 million muslims in France...about 1% of the population.

Do it now while it's still manageable. If you wear the burka...no welfare payments!!

Europe allowing itself to be overrun by the Muslim hoard without the slightest resistance, until it was too late, has to be one of the most stark examples of cultural suicide in history.

America is in wretched moral shape when it is France that leads the way.

Sarkozy also seems to have a more realistic view of Pres. Hussein than our Liberal, cultural elites do.

”Moreover, freedom in America is indivisible from the freedom to practice one's religion. That is why there is a mosque in every state of our union, and over 1,200 mosques within our borders. That is why the U.S. government has gone to court to protect the right of women and girls to wear the hijab, and to punish those who would deny it. So let there be no doubt: Islam is a part of America.” - Obama in Cairo

While this does sound like a good idea on its face, I do see an inherent problem in governments taking it upon themselves to ban styles of clothing that are not in themselves “indecent.”

The problem isn’t burqas... that is just a symptom. The root of the problem itself needs to be dealt with - Islam. A real solution should involve closing mosques and mass deportations.

Banning forms of clothing, on the other hand, is just a half-assed measure which sets precedents for future abuse.

Living in a Muslim neighborhood, I occasionally see a woman in a burka. I was thinking it would be the perfect attire for an armed robbery. Would be hard to ID the perp and one could pack a lot of heat and ammo under a burka.

Definition:
Decency - is an individual's adherence to social standards of appropriate speech and conduct.

I know what you are saying but baning the religion would be harder and the religion MUST be attacked.

Statistics

Estimates of the number of Muslims in France vary widely. In accordance with a law dating from 1872[citation needed], the French Republic does not ask about religion in its census. Nor does it ask for ethnic origin. In 2006 the United States Department of State placed it at roughly 10%,[1] while two 2007 polls placed it at 3% of the national population.[2] The CIA World Factbook places it at 5-10%.
[3] In 2000, the French Ministry of the Interior estimated the total number of people born into Islam as 4.1 million and converts as about 40,000. Estimates of numbers of Muslims, and the alleged dangers in the housing projects of the suburbs by the Renseignements Généraux, the intelligence agency, have often been criticized. Critics in particular are the Monde diplomatique and the Canard Enchaîné.

A study conducted by Michèle Tribalat (fr), a researcher at INED, and based on 1999 French census returns, showed that claims of 5 to 6 million Muslims in France were overestimated. According to the census returns, there are 3.7 million people of “possible Muslim faith” in France (6.3% of the total population of Metropolitan France in 1999)[4]. These 3.7 million people whose ancestry is from countries where Islam is the dominant faith may or may not be observant Muslims themselves.

The idiots jailed her numerous time for speaking out against Islam influences in France- such as their barbaric practices of publicly torturing and slaughtering animals during Islamic celebrations.

Exactly. It's a form on concealment on many levels. It is also a hazard. It gives Muslim women absolutely no peripheral vision in any direction. Extremely dangerous, not only when driving a car(which obviously should be prohibited), but also just walking down a city street.

I could not find anything upon a brief search about Bridgitte being jailed, but she has been fined plenty and harassed for speaking out.

Prosecutors asked that the Paris court hand the 73-year-old former sex symbol a two-month suspended prison sentence and fine her 15,000 euros ($23,760) for saying the Muslim community was “destroying our country and imposing its acts.”

Since retiring from the film industry in the 1970s, Bardot has become a prominent animal rights activist but she has also courted controversy by denouncing Muslim traditions and immigration from predominantly Muslim countries.

She has been fined four times for inciting racial hatred since 1997, at first 1,500 euros and most recently 5,000.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2001953/posts?page=1

Prominent animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot was recently fined 30,000 francs by a French court for comments she made in a recent book, “Pluto’s Square.” In the book, Bardot complains about the large number of Muslim immigrants in France and especially the ritual slaughter of sheep during a Muslim religious festival.

In the book, Bardot complains that “…my country, France, my homeland, my land is again invaded by an overpopulation of foreigners, especially Muslims.”

France, like many European countries, has laws against inciting racial hatred, and this is the third time that Bardot has been convicted of such an offense
http://www.animalrights.net/articles/2000/brigitte-bardot-fined-for-racist-remarks

Bridgitte is one of the world’s leading advocates for animal rights. She has donated her own money and raised millions for the animals who cannot speak for themselves.

God bless this woman.

Here in Kuwait, it is common to see women driving a car with the full-bore “ninja b*tch” thing going. Believe me, few of them actually know how to control a modern contrivance like an automobile. On top of that these broads are usually yakking on their cell phones with little Mohammed and Aisha jumping around inside the Escalade or Porsche SUV like retarded monkeys on crack. I have never driven in a more dangerous place. To complete the deadly mix, throw in a plethora of incompetent, absolutely insane drivers from the likes of Pakistan and India, some of whom might have had experience driving a rickshaw or donkey cart, but not a car. A Westerner’s chance of getting picked-off by fans of “The Perfect Man,” here is negligable, especially when compared to his chances of getting smoked on the roads. It’s madness—absolute madness.

A few months ago I was cruising out near a sh*thole town named Wafra. The roads out that way are razor-straight and they disappear to the horizon. Visibility is unlimited. Yet I came upon a late-’90s Chevy Impala that was literally scattered across 500 feet of desert. It had obviously rolled over many times. I’m still wondering how that accident went down. Was it a blown tire at 140mph or a case of asleep at the wheel while driving at a ridiculously high rate of speed? Too bad, the car looked like it had been in mint condition prior to the accident.
