Region’s first swine flu death confirmed

The tri-county area has suffered its first swine flu death.

The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit on Monday night confirmed “the death of an area resident who had the H1N1 influenza virus.”

“The death occurred in an adult resident who also had an underlying medical condition,” added the heath unit’s press release which, in keeping with the agency’s usual policy, provides no further details about the individual.

“It is never easy losing a loved one and I offer my condolences to the family of this individual,” medical officer of health Dr. Anne Carter adds in the prepared statement.

Health unit spokesman Susan Healey said the health unit got confirmation of the death on Friday.

Healey did not know whether the victim was male or female and, while emphasizing the deceased was not a child, she did not know the person’s age.

The underlying medical condition likely had more to do with this tragedy than the victim’s age, she said.

Healey said she believes the victim died at a hospital in Ottawa.

She would not say what part of the tri-county area the victim was from, citing the agency’s confidentiality policy and adding that, in a region made up of small communities, it would require very few details to make someone identifiable.

The news comes as the most recent statistics show the number of H1N1 cases in the area is actually beginning to decrease.

Carter said in her statement that, while most people who develop influenza will suffer only mild symptoms, “this recent death highlights the importance of immunizing those residents most vulnerable to developing complications from H1N1 and those who are household contacts or caregivers of those at-risk individuals who cannot be immunized.

“While we are over the peak of the virus here in Leeds, Grenville and Lanark counties, there is still lots of illness around,” added Carter.

The timing of the virus’s peak varies from region to region, noted Carter. The Public Health Agency of Canada reports the virus has not reached a peak in Canada, so anyone travelling outside the region may be going to an area where H1N1 is still on the ascendant.

Additional info - location - on two pregnant women previously reported in North Carolina...

Two Pregnant Women Die In Wake County From H1N1 Virus

RALEIGH - According to a local television report, two pregnant women in Wake County have died of the swine flu or H1N1 virus.

WRAL-TV said that the women were not identified and that the Wake County Health Department did not identify where the women lived, but that they had died during the last week of October.

Wake County has temporarily ended giving the shots for the H1N1 virus at its clinics around the county because it has run out of the vaccine.

“The supply of Wake County’s H1N1 vaccine is temporarily depleted, and H1N1 clinics are closed,” said the county on its website.

The county said that the shots will be available when the vaccine has been restocked.

According to the county, most flu illness in Wake County at this time is being caused by H1N1 virus.

Manitoba, Canada.

1 new death. I suspect this is a confirmation of the suspected case reported Nov 5.

Manitoban dies from swine flu
Last Updated: Tuesday, November 10, 2009 | 1:17 PM ET
http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2009/11/10/mb-h1n1-death-manitoba.html

The first death due to the fall outbreak of the H1N1 virus has occurred in Manitoba.

Health officials announced the person’s death on Tuesday, but did not provide many details, only that it was an adult between ages 18 and 65 who had underlying medical conditions.

Officials would not say where the person lived. The provincial government’s protocol since the spring outbreak of H1N1, or swine flu, has been to not reveal which communities have confirmed cases, for fear it will stigmatize them.

There were seven deaths in Manitoba during the spring wave of the virus.

The province is also reporting there are now 66 lab-confirmed cases of swine flu in Manitoba, with many more people still being tested.

I haven't heard of more than 2-3 mentioned on the local news. This comes as a real surprise to me. Makes me think there's no real desire to make it known to the public.

A Very Interesting Scientific Study About Tamiflu and Zithromax and the flu .....

More Effective Treatment For Pneumonia Following Influenza Found, Study Shows

Tamiflu AND azithromycin (Zithromax).

(Not all antibiotics are created equal. Zithromax has an anti-inflammatory effect. I wish the mouse study that laurab cited had employed azithromycin in the “antibiotics only” group. The study laurab cited used ampicillin. We have already received poor reports on ampicillin’s impact when used in this pandemic).

11 year old Lee County girl dies from Swine flu
news-press.com • November 10, 2009

The Lee County Health Department has received notification of its fifth H1N1 (Swine) Flu-related death in an 11 year old female resident with pre-existing conditions.

“We offer our sincere condolences to this child’s family and friends for their loss” said Judith A. Hartner, M.D., M.P.H., M.P.A., Director of the Lee County Health Department.

“While most cases of H1N1 Swine Flu are mild, there are exceptions. This is why the Lee County Health Department urges our community to get vaccinations against H1N1, a virus to which we have no immunity” said Hartner.

H1N1 can lead to severe sickness, and even death in some cases. Even young, healthy people can suffer serious consequences when infected. As of October 31, 149 deaths have been reported in Florida.

H1N1 confirmed as cause of 6-year-old’s death in Vacaville [California]

The Reporter

Updated: 11/10/2009 09:52:35 AM PST

VACAVILLE— Complications from the H1N1 virus caused the death of a 6-year-old Vacaville girl last month, Solano coroner’s officials announced Monday.

Alexis Clara, 6, reportedly fell ill with flu-like symptoms on Oct. 15 and was admitted to VacaValley Hospital on Oct. 18. She died that same day. [Symptomatic to Dead in 72 hours]

Though it was quickly determined that she had the H1N1 virus, commonly known as the swine flu virus, it took a battery of tests to determine whether the condition caused the child’s death, coroner’s officials have said.

Absenteeism at Browns Valley Elementary School, where Alexis was a first-grader, rose to 25 percent soon after the girl’s death. On the recommendation of county public health officials, the school was closed for four days.

“By having it closed for four days, it will interrupt that cycle of transmission,” said Robin Cox, Solano County health education manager, at the time.

Meanwhile, “Vacaville Christian High School was also briefly closed after more than 40 students and a third of the teaching staff were afflicted with “H1N1 symptoms, according to a note at the school’s entrance.

County health officials have urged residents to get the H1N1 vaccine as soon as it becomes available.

Google Translation - Viking’s news source above:

Further deaths in Örebro probably related to swine influenza

Released today. 12:15 12:15

A man in 60s from Örebro County have been found dead at his home. The man estimated to have died of heart attack associated with influenza illness.

The man did not belong to any of the groups at risk for becoming seriously ill with flu, but had a respiratory infection in just over a week, write the Örebro County Council said in a statement.

The man was in contact with the doctor early last week to receive extended sick leave. He had been absent from work for a week and did not feel healthy enough to return to work. The man reported not having been seriously ill.

A few days after the medical visit, the man found dead in his home by a relative.

The autopsy shows that the man died of a recent myocardial infarction. Sampling carried out shows that the man wore on influenza A (H1N1). Influenza is believed to have triggered a heart attack, which was the direct cause of death.

This is the second flu-related death is caused to Örebro in a short time. Just over a week ago died a man in his 50s after a period of febrile illness. The autopsy showed a heart attack with complications caused by swine flu was the cause of death.

189 Deaths Reported in Ukraine - Belarus to 223K Cases
Recombinomics Commentary 21:32
November 10, 2009

1,122,188 Influenza/ARI

57,286 Hospitalized

189 Deaths

The above numbers are from the latest report from Ukraine. Numbers in all categories continue to rise, The two locations with the biggest increases were Kiev (8062 to 76,285) and Kiev Oblast (6,522 to 56,688). These increases indicate the H1N1 is spreading east and the high numbers in the Kiev region may be associated with the jump of cases in the Gomel region in Belarus, with 48,754 cases in influenza/ARI (see map). Belarus also reported 8 fatal pneumonia cases fro the region, and larger numbers of fatalities had been reported earlier for Minsk. For the entire country, Belarus reported 223,349 cases, further supporting the H1N1 spread in the region.

Although the number of fatalities in Belarus is increasing, and may rival Ukraine, samples were sent to Mill Hill from Ukraine at the beginning of the month, and an announcement of sequencing data has been delayed.

The steady increases of H1N1 cases and hemorrhagic pneumonia deaths in Ukraine, as well as similar numbers reported for Belarus, increase concerns about the sequencing delays.

The sequences should be made public immediately.
