Within minutes, six-year-old Rubjit Thindal went from happily chatting in the back seat of the car to collapsing and dying in her father's arms.

"If we had known it was so serious, we would have called 911,'' Kuldip Thindal, Rubjit's distraught mother, said in Punjabi yesterday. "She just had a stomach ache -- she wasn't even crying.''

Rubjit was pronounced dead at hospital barely 24 hours after showing signs of a fever. Later, doctors told her parents she had the H1N1 influenza virus. She is believed to be the youngest person in Canada with the virus to have died.

Health authorities on November 10 confirmed one more fatal case A/H1N1 flu, bringing the total death toll to 40.

The victim was a 17-year-old girl from Dong Anh district, Hanoi. She showed signs of fever, cough and pain in the chest and was sent to the district hospital on November 5, then transferred to the higher-level hospital of Thanh Nhan and later on to the national hospital for communicable and tropical diseases as her condition worsened.

At the hospital, she tested positive for the A/H1N1 flu virus and was treated with Tamiflu and antibiotics. Despite intensive treatment, the girl died on November 7.

By the end of November 10, Vietnam has reported 10,791 H1N1 cases of the super-flu and has already discharged 10,549 of them.

Doctors confirm H1N1 in asthma patient who died

A 51-year-old chronic asthmatic was treated three times for her condition at a Richmond, B.C., hospital before she died, and now doctors say H1N1 worsened her illness.

Mae Mah went to Richmond Hospital on Oct. 31 for a severe asthmatic attack. She had been routinely treated at the facility before. Doctors cared for her and sent her home.

But Mah had another severe attack the next day, and emergency medical workers brought her back to the hospital.

“The second time, she went back by ambulance with shortness of breath and a fever. They told her to breathe through her nose and gave her Tylenol,” Mah’s daughter, Tiffany Yung, told CTV News.

Mah was again treated and sent home. But after a third visit to the emergency room, her heart stopped. Doctors re-admitted her to the intensive care unit and put her on a ventilator, but she died soon after.

The woman’s family say doctors treated her asthma without realizing she had been infected with swine flu, and the virus made underlying health condition much worse.

Experts said detecting swine flu in someone suffering a severe asthma attack can be difficult.

“It doesn’t specifically say H1N1,” said Winnipeg-based Dr. Anand Kumar. “It does say there is something you want to pay attention to, that there may be more going on than just a routine asthma flare.”

Staff at Richmond Hospital are now looking into the incident, as part of standard protocol when a patient dies after repeated care.

“We routinely review cases in which there was a fatality after multiple visits to the hospital to ensure that care was provided appropriately,” a spokesperson for Vancouver Coastal Health told CTV News in a statement.

Meanwhile, Mah’s family is struggling to come to terms with her sudden death. Mah had been preparing to celebrate Yung’s 23rd birthday.

“My birthday’s next Monday,” said Yung. “She had planned a surprise birthday party for me. I’m devastated she’s not here to celebrate.”

Swine flu death toll hits 23 in B.C.
http://www.theprovince.com/health/Swine+death+toll+hits/2208396/story.html

Eight more British Columbians died of the H1N1 flu in the past week, including a child under 10, bringing the total number of deaths from H1N1 in the province to 23.
[snip]
It’s possible more people have died from the flu than have been recorded to date.

For instance, if someone with underlying health issues died before the H1N1 was confirmed in a lab, that number would be included, said Dr. Danuta Skowronski of the B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC).

“We recognize we’re not getting all of the [numbers of] hospitalizations or deaths from H1N1,” she said.

“The numbers are useful for trend-monitoring but we don’t pretend it’s the total.”

She couldn’t estimate how many other British Columbians have died from H1N1.

Fourteen of the newly reported deaths occurred before last Friday and an additional death happened over the weekend, said King, who added H1N1 activity continues to rise across the province.

French school closed after emergence of flu cases

www.chinaview.cn 2009-11-11 09:42:46
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-11/11/content_12430650.htm

PARIS, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) — A primary school in east France was closed on Tuesday after 15 cases of flu were identified in the campus, the regional prefect said in a statement.

“Considering the report of 15 flu cases in the school in Val-Thorens, among which, one has been confirmed (as A/H1N1 flu), the prefect decided to close the school as active prevention,” local media quoted the statement as saying.

Val-Thorens, a notable ski resort in Europe, was located in France’s eastern prefecture of Savoie, in the French Alps.

The school will not open until Nov. 16, the prefect said.

As winter comes, the activity of A/H1N1 virus has augmented for the last three weeks in France. Paris health authorities announced on Monday three more deaths from A/H1N1 flu over the past three days.

French Education Minister Luc Chatel said on Sunday that a freewill vaccination exclusive for 12 million children in kindergartens and primary and secondary schools would be offered from Nov. 25, while nationwide vaccination is scheduled to start as early as on Nov. 12.

WA:

Swine flu vaccine stolen from Olympia hospice

OLYMPIA — Someone stole vials of the H1N1 flu vaccine from a hospice in Olympia sometime last week from Providence Home Care and Hospice.

It may be just crooks out for some quick cash, or a sign of how desperate people are to get their hands on the flu shot.

“We had 10 vials on Wednesday and when we checked Friday afternoon, we had eight vials — plus one had been compromised - so it had been opened,” said Katherine Cozier with Providence Home Care and Hospice.

Nobody knows where the vials are or who stole them, but Thurston County investigators say the thieves didn’t break into the care center to get their hands on them. They think the suspect either works at the care center or knows somebody who does.

Investigators say the thief may have used one vial to vaccinate himself, then took the other two vials home — perhaps to vaccinate friends and family or sell.

All across Western Washington, demand for the swine flu shot is high while the amount of vaccine to go around is low.

The stolen vaccine was supposed to go to care workers who work with hospice patients.

“It was important that they’re vaccinated,” Cozier said, “and so this is 30 less clinicians that we’re able to vaccinate.”

Providence is now looking for replacement vaccine, but with such short supply, the chances of finding any could be difficult.

Sheriff’s deputies say they’ve never seen anyone try to sell vaccine before; each vial is worth about $1,000.

Hospitals bar visits by children to curb flu

Wednesday, November 11, 2009
STATEHOUSE
http://www.nj.com/news/ledger/jersey/index.ssf?/base/news-15/1257904507218110.xml&coll=1

All New Jersey hospitals are being urged to suspend visiting privileges for people younger than 18 to stem the spread of the swine flu, the industry’s leading trade group said yesterday.

Many hospitals around the state already have barred children from visiting as cases of the swine flu have steadily increased and the vaccine shortage persists. Since the month began, the virus has killed two adult men — a 37-year-old Essex County resident on Nov. 1, and a 51-year-old Gloucester County resident on Friday. The deaths bring the statewide total of swine, or H1N1, flu-related deaths to 22 people since June, state Department of Health and Senior Services spokeswoman Donna Leusner confirmed yesterday.

“These are common-sense precautions in the midst of a growing H1N1 flu outbreak,”

Nigeria: Swine Flu - No Travel Restriction - FG

Chinyere Amalu
11 November 2009
http://allafrica.com/stories/200911110074.html

Abuja — The Federal Government yesterday assured Nigerians that the outbreak of swine flu in the country did not restrict movement of immigrants in and out of the country.

The Federal Ministry of Health in a statement signed by Special Assistant (Communication) to the Minister, Mr. Niyi Ojuolape, said ven though the country had one confirmed case, “we hasten to state categorically that in line with WHO International Health Regulations (IHR 2005), there is no travel restriction into or out of Nigeria, as a result of the occurrence of the influenza in Nigeria.”

The statement read in part: “Further to the official confirmation of the first case of influenza A/H1N1 in the country in a nine-year-old American girl residing in Lagos two days ago, we have been informed that there are concerns about the free movement of immigrants in and out of the country.

“Any person can come into the country once he or she has a valid entry document especially since there are appropriate surveillance and safeguard measures being taken at our ports of entry.”

The Federal Government, however, assured Nigerians that with the cooperation of all state’s ministries of health and the partners, specific measure had been put in place to enhance surveillance in case of any outbreak.

“We wish to re-emphasize the fact that the girl involved recovered fully and is well and back to school. All the contacts at home or at school are also well and free from the influenza pandemic.

“Very importantly also, the Federal Government and all the states’ Ministries of Health together with our partners have put in place efficient and strengthened preparedness and response plans in addition to enhanced surveillance to pick up and contain any other case that may occur.

“We want to again reassure all Nigerians that they do not need to panic and that the ministry together with our partners are on top of the situation making sure that all Nigerians are protected from the pandemic,” it added.

Egypt reports sixth A/H1N1 flu death

www.chinaview.cn 2009-11-11 16:16:48
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-11/11/content_12433969.htm

CAIRO, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) — Egypt has registered the sixth A/H1N1 flu death case in the country, Al-Ahram daily reported on Wednesday.

A 24-year-old pregnant woman from Sharqia governorate died of A/H1N1 virus in the hospital on Tuesday night, the report said.

The woman returned from Italy on Oct. 25 and was hospitalized on Nov. 5, according to the report.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health said that the previous case — a school student — died from wrong medicine, not of flu, so the pregnant woman is the sixth death case.

Up till now, the ministry has reported more than 1,800 cases of the novel flu in the most populous Arab country.

Egypt reported its first A/H1N1 flu case on June 2, a 12-year- old Egyptian-American girl coming from the United States via the Netherlands.

Turkey reports 36 deaths of A/H1N1 flu

www.chinaview.cn 2009-11-11 16:12:04
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-11/11/content_12433869.htm

ANKARA, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) — Turkey recorded six more deaths from A/H1N1 flu, bringing the death toll in the country’s pandemic to 36, Turkish media reported Wednesday.

The most recent victims included an infant, the semi-official Anatolia news agency quoted a Ministry of Health statement as saying. The report didn’t give further details.

Turkey has witnessed a fast rise of A/H1N1 flu deaths during the past few weeks.

Turkey registered the first A/H1N1 flu case on May 15. The first death case was a 28-year-old male hospital janitor in Ankara, who died on Oct. 24.

Authorities began last week to vaccinate vulnerable groups against the flu, starting from health workers and Muslim pilgrims preparing to travel to Mecca for the annual hajj.

Israel:

Swine Flu ‘Death Toll’ at 43, Only 5 ‘Healthy’ Victims

Reported: 11:02 AM - Nov/11/09
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/Flash.aspx/174306

(IsraelNN.com) Two more people have been added to the list of victims of the H1N1 “swine flu” virus, although both had medical complications that preceded the illness. One was a 65-year-old woman from Jerusalem who suffered a severe form of pneumonia. The other was a 21-year-old disabled woman with cerebral palsy, a resident of the S. Vincent’s home in Jerusalem’s Ein Kerem neighborhood. The S. Vincent’s school was closed last Thursday by health officials after a majority of the students caught the H1N1 virus.

The death toll from the pandemic in Israel now stands at 43 — however, only five of the victims have been documented as having been totally healthy prior to coming down with the H1N1 virus, and had no underlying medical conditions. One of those was a 31-year-old man from Petach Tikvah who died Monday at the Rabin Medical Center after struggling against the virus after being hospitalized last month with high fever and a cough. As with most of the others, he was subsequently diagnosed with pneumonia, secondary to the flu.

Armenia Reports First Suspected Swine Flu Cases

November 11, 2009
http://www.rferl.org/content/Armenia_Reports_First_Suspected_SwineFlu_Cases/1874812.html

YEREVAN — Armenian Health officials have urged people not to “panic” after the first cases of swine flu were reported in the country, RFE/RL’s Armenian Service reports.

Officials said on November 9 that blood samples from three people possibly infected with swine flu were sent to a World Health Organization (WHO) laboratory in London for testing.

Shushan Hunanian, a senior Health Ministry official, told RFE/RL that two of the infected individuals are Armenians from the town of Echmiadzin and the third is an Iranian national who came to Armenia from Ukraine.

Hunanian also saw “no need to panic,” saying the medical services are “prepared” to cope with the swine flu outbreak and will seek newly developed flu vaccines “as soon as possible.”

Health Minister Harutiun Kushkian said last week that the authorities will wait for 15 to 20 days before deciding whether to purchase the medication.

He also said they have stepped up the monitoring of people coming to Armenia from neighboring states.

All of them have reported swine flu cases in recent months, although Turkey has recently been the hardest hit.

KABUL - Afghanistan appears to be losing the fight against swine flu, as many parts of the country remain fairly unsanitary.

Kabul, which currently is the center of Afghanistan’s H1N1 outbreak, has over 450 confirmed cases. This has led to schools and universities being closed. Large public gatherings have also been banned, and people have been advised to wear masks, reports CBS News.

The vurus has also affected the more than 300 foreign troops. A 140 suspected cases are American. Inoculation against swine flu for U.S. troops started Tuesday.

Afghanistan needs a million doses of the vaccine, claimed the country’s Public Health Minister, Dr. Mohammad Amin Fatimie. (ANI)

According to an UNIAN correspondent, Yulia Timoshenko announced this today at a Cabinet meeting.

“From 8 to 10 November, we see an increase in the rate 2,5-3 times. And it suggests that the epidemic does not weaken its grip “, - said Tymoshenko.

Yushchenko did not give Timoshenko “influenzal” billion
11/Nov/09

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko intends to veto a law to allocate 1 billion UAH. from the National Bank of Ukraine for overcoming the epidemic of influenza.

According to an UNIAN correspondent, he told reporters during a “hot” telephone line in the newspaper “Komsomolskaya Pravda in Ukraine”.

“I am with this law will do as well as with the law on Euro-2012”, - said Victor Yushchenko.

The President noted that the state budget in 2009 to date, lacks 30% of revenue. According to Yushchenko, the prime minister can not afford to finance even the urgent issues.

Therefore, as he said, according to Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, the only way of funding is the issue of the hryvnia. However, the President said, such steps would inevitably lead to the devaluation of the hryvnia.

According to him, therefore, Tymoshenko conducts unfair policy. It added to Yushchenko, she does not mention the emission emissions, but at the same time tries to take 1 billion UAH. the National Bank, which is not where to get.

“I will not be the author of such policies. How can, I will oppose this policy “, - assured President Yushchenko.

However, he stressed that his decision to veto this law does not mean that he will not give recommendations where to get funds to fight the flu.

He added that the response on funding resources, he must give.

WHO Appeals to Ukraine for Help with Hemorrhagic Pneumonia
Recombinomics Commentary 13:36
November 11, 2009

WHO experts appealed to Ukrainian physicians requested to report positive experiences in treating patients with severe influenza A/H1N1, so it can be used not only in Ukraine but other countries, the WHO European Region.

The above translation is from a report today by the Ukraine Ministry of Health. It is an appeal for Ukrainian physicians to detail positive outcomes from efforts to deal with the fatal pneumonia cases in Ukraine (see map). Ninety such patients were described earlier. H1N1 infections led to the “total destruction” of both lungs.

This request further highlights the need to release the sequences from these patients. Mill Hill has had the samples for well over a week, and should have had full sequences last week. Recent sequences from fatal cases in Sao Paulo, Brazil had receptor binding changes (D225N and D225G), and there are concerns that these changes or other single nucleotide polymorphisms could significantly affect clinical presentations and outcomes.

Release of H1N1 sequences from Ukraine is long overdue.

Drive-through H1N1 flu clinics planned

By Jessie Pounds
Published: November 10, 2009

Central Virginia’s Health District is gearing up to offer drive-thru flu vaccine clinics as part of a public H1N1 vaccine campaign in the area.

Central Virginia Health District Director Kerry Gateley, in a public talk on Tuesday afternoon, said it might be early December before the health department receives enough H1N1 vaccine for a public campaign.

When that begins, the health district plans in part to use drive-thru tents, where vaccines can be given to people inside vehicles. One advantage to such a method, Gateley said, is that people don’t catch the flu while standing in line to get inoculated.

The district preformed a drill using this method in October 2008 with seasonal flu vaccines and was able to vaccinate more than 300 people in the space of a couple of hours.
