The most violent country in Europe: Britain is also worse than South Africa and U.S.

Britain's violent crime record is worse than any other country in the European union, it is revealed today.

Official crime figures show the UK also has a worse rate for all types of violence than the U.S. and even South Africa - widely considered one of the world's most dangerous countries.

The figures comes on the day new Home Secretary Alan Johnson makes his first major speech on crime, promising to be tough on loutish behaviour.

The Tories said Labour had presided over a decade of spiralling violence.

In the decade following the party's election in 1997, the number of recorded violent attacks soared by 77 per cent to 1.158million - or more than two every minute.

In the UK, there are 2,034 offences per 100,000 people, way ahead of second-placed Austria with a rate of 1,677.

The U.S. has a violence rate of 466 crimes per 100,000 residents, Canada 935, Australia 92 and South Africa 1,609.

There are also degrees of violence. While the UK ranks above South Africa for all violent crime, South Africans suffer more than 20,000 murders each year - compared with Britain's 921 in 2007.

This despite strict gun laws? I’m astonished!

Wait a sec.

You mean to tell me that the grand ol’ USA has a lower crime rate than the the top ten countries in Europe and our little snobby brother up north? Color me not surprised.

Hmmm... Even Canada is more violent than USA... is Australia a typo? Only 92 violent crimes per 100k? I wonder if they have any gun laws?

My wife & I were amazed at how many white 20 & 30 somethings had missing teeth and broken arms, etc throughout Scotland last summer - I think they like to drink during soccer matches and then fight, a lot.

But wait! How can that be??? I just finished reading an article about Gwyneth Paltrow in General/Chat in which she said, among other things, “I like living here (Britain) because I don’t fit into the bad side of American psychology. The British are much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans.”

Something isn't jibing here. Do you mean to tell me that Gwynnie could be wrong and that maybe the U.S. isn't actually the crappiest country in the world? Huh.

More than two decades ago, as an exchange student in England, I had to answer questions posed by British students at a school. One student asked: "Is it true there's a mugging every minute in New York City?" I wonder what that person is thinking now about his own country.

The Scottish fight at the drop of the hat. They love to fight.

The Irish get ready to fight then start crying about something.

A lot of the most fearless cops and firefighters in places like NYC are Irish-American. Lots of very brave American military men from SE USA are Scottish extraction.

Brits can thank confiscation of guns and bearers of The Religion of Peace. If the Brits again become bearers of the religion of piece (as in bullet shooter)crime will go down.

You beat me to the mention of Stanley Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange”.

I lived in England for a year, back in the late 80’s and I can tell you for a fact that the Brits have an inner barbarian lurking just below the surface in their culture.

Heaven help the muzzies if that inner barbarian every decides to open a can of whup ass on them.

So, Britain has better than FOUR TIMES as many violent crimes per capita than the U.S.? That’s pretty astonishing.
