Sotomayor wins backers after smooth hearings
Associated Press ^ | July 17, 2009 | Julie Hirschfeld Davis and Jesse J. Holland

Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor won her first public pledges of support from Senate Republicans and one prominent GOP opponent, after a smooth performance at her confirmation hearings that has placed her firmly on track to become the high court's first Latina and the first Democratic-named justice in 15 years.

Three centrist Republicans announced they'd support Sotomayor even as the Senate's minority leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, said he'd vote no. The split was a vivid reflection of the divisions in the GOP as the party faces a tricky vote on Sotomayor, wary of alienating its conservative base but equally afraid to anger Hispanic and women voters.

Oh, well, it was never in any doubt. Republicans don’t have the numbers and they are so discouraged at how outnumbered they are, they decided to let this one go so they could fight on other fronts (like health care). it sucks, but I never expected anything different. And it’s not like confirming Sotomayor will change anything all that much, as David Souter was also a lefty.

“Smooth hearings” are what happens when people wet themselves any time they think the race card will be played against them for saying what needs to be said or asking a question that needs to be asked.

What I learned from the hearings: Wise Latina — Intellectual unqualified.

Did anyone expect Snowe, Collins, Lugar, etc. to vote ANYTHING but with the Liberals? These are RINO's of the highest order, and can be counted on by the Democrats to vote with them.

Lindsay Graham and others will cave, also, and it has NOTHING to do with "the Hearings"; those were for TV facetime and show only.

You aint shittin, did you hear the exchange between her and Coburn today regarding the right to self defense. A conservative nominee would not have survived another day and their career would be over if the were this inept at answering such a simple question.

“There was doubt?”

There was hope that Sotomayor would reveal herself accidentally during testimony, or that the firefighters/witnesses would offer more dramatic testimoney. But the firefighters didn’t get enough air time, and Sotomayor stuck to her prepared script.

I look forward to Lugar’s retirement. He’s been in DC for way, way too long.

Over the years, Luger has claimed he was not a professional politician. Election, after election, after election, after election …

Yeah I did ... Wise dumbass loudmouth Latina.

She talks like she is trying to impress you with her sub-par room temperature intellect. Obviously the most unqualified SC candidate ever.

In fact I think she was chosen because she is so dumb. All they want is her ideological vote.

Over the years, I have toyed with the idea of joining the Libertarian Party. Because of their stance (on none stance) on abortion I have hesitated. I have finally given up on the Republican Party and will give the Libertarian Party another look.

I know they (Republicans) couldn’t have stopped this nomination, but most didn’t even try and several even gave her praise. IMHO

(As for the abortion thing … the Republican platform is moving more and more in the direction of Pro-Abortion.)

that about nails it. The only thing I wish the repub senators would do is what schumer does to every repub nominee. Schumer asks them flat out if they think roe v wade is settled law? Why dont we ask her flatout if the dc v heller(I think that was the name) case upholding the 2nd amendment is now settled law?

I know that Supreme Court appointments are lifetime appointments and short of impeachment, justices can’t be removed. Is the office of Chief Justice under the same restrictions … can he or she be demoted?

“Then my sneeze shot and upstairs to a meeting with Justice Thurgood Marshall. I'd asked for a meeting because of his public statement to Carl Rowan that I was a racist.”
—RR,”The Reagan Diaries."

Thurgood Marshall—The first and,so far, last black racist on the Supreme Court.

“Wise Latina woman...”
—Sotomayor

The first and,by the grace of God,LAST racist hispanic on the Supreme Court.
