It also sounded to me like she was doing one of the neighbors , who noticed the activity, a favor by making this call.

So much for Good Samaratins.
++++++++++++++++

Amazing how this woman never brought up race, til the dispatcher asked a more probing question about it (for the sake of the officers going to the scene).

I guess we’ve gotten to a point in this country, where it’s not possible to even admit (if you’re black) that a black person is *capable* of committing a crime, nor is it possible to *suggest* a black person could possibly commit a crime (if you’re not black).

For all others, normal rules of reality and fairness apply.

This is what race baiting and crying wolf have brought us to...is it any wonder that “self acclaimed post-partisan” bambi’s stoking this fire?

I can't speak for any agency but mine. The tapes run 24-7. Not just when there is voice/radio transmission. The tapes are all time stamp dated. Is it a waste of tape? Probably. Does it allow us to say nothing was erased? Oh yeah. Remember that most system are multi track. There may not be any police traffic, but the EMS, fire or anyone else on the system may be using airtime.

Same union and the union is backing the arresting officer 110%.

No way no how that is going to change.

Havard profs and college profs in this town have a bad rep. A lot of “do you know who I am” attitude.

Gates isn’t the first Havard prof. to pull this, he is the fist one to have a sitting President defend his actions.

This stuff happens all the time up here, trust me. It is usually off the news paper in two days and life goes on.

All this prof had to do was prove he owned the place but instead he cops an attitude with the police. As I understand this, the profs neighbor (who should have full well known who owned the house) called the cops in the first place. Now THAT is just to funny! Sgt. Crowley did his job correctly!

Lucia Whalen is denying the facts in the police report. Specifically, she is denying talking to Crowley at the scene and identifying the two men as black.

Somebody’s lying. According to reports, the tape shows Crowley saying he’s arriving at the scene at the 4:00 mark and then later saying he was interacting with Gates at the 4:28 mark- which means his conversation with Whalen took 28 seconds. Of course, the tapes could just be registering the location on the tape where recording actually occurred- and not an indication of time.

I’m wondering if the woman witness that Crowley talked with, and who may have mentioned they were ‘two black men’, was the same ‘older woman’ who approached the woman who called 911 and enlisted her assistance about reporting it.

After all, she was the one who was closer to the scene and had a better view of the men. The woman who called 911 said she wasn’t close enough to determine their race for certain.

The older lady was with her when she called, because she mentioned her interrupting her.

Stands to reason the older woman who apparently lived in the neighborhood would hang around to see what transpired. The woman who called it in didn’t live in the neighborhood. She was only passing through there.

So where is this elderly lady?

Don’t know. She was mentioned by the woman who called in the 911 report.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2009/07/27/911_tape_reveals_caller_did_not_bring_up_race_of_gates.html

Cambridge’s police commissioner says the 911 caller who reported a possible break-in at the home of black Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. did not mention race during the call. The caller said they were calling on behalf of a concerned neighbor.

That is definitely a possibility although Crowley notes in his report the woman was later identified as Whalen. That could have been an “after the fact” assumption on his part, since she was on record as the one who called and the person who said she might wait around for the cops..
If Crowley didn’t talk to the “elderly woman”, I think he may be in trouble. Everything Whalen claimed is backed up by the 911 recording. She was completely straight with the operator and even offered she wasn’t sure they were burglars or just a couple of guys who lived there but got locked out.
By the same token, it’s almost incomprehensible Crowley would make up his conversation with Whalen. He would have to realize she would deny talking to him.

I read somewhere that Obama chose Bud (maybe that’s because Bud is wiser now! ha.), Crowley chose Blue Moon (once in a blue moon?), so the Red Stripe (Commie. ha.) must be Gates’. If that were the case, both Gates and Obama should be drinking the Red Stripe, imo.

One of the things Crowley does is provide training on the subject of racial profiling - evidently what is and what isn’t. This is in MA where I somehow doubt racial profiling is rampant to begin with.

I’m a proponent of racial profiling. Because ‘cultural diversity’ has God-like status in this country, we are familiarized with the varying behaviors and attitudes among the various ‘cultures.’ As such, certain behaviors and viewpoints are more predictable among one culture versus another. In law enforcement, it is the responsibility of the police to try to avert criminal behavior whenever possible. If somebody from a culture which produces a higher rate of criminals, especially violent criminals, is seen behaving suspiciously, it would not be unreasonable to watch that person or question him, and a law enforcement officer is more likely to do that when dealing with people of cultures from which a particular undesirable behavior is more prominent. In MA, I suspect that this logical response from law enforcement is quelled and quashed to the greatest degree possible, violence be damned, property crimes be damned.

So, in Crowley’s case as someone who provides sensitivity to racial profiling issues and is not a supporter of racial profiling or he wouldn’t have been given the training job on the subject, what’s happened to him with Gates may be a matter of “let no good deed go unpunished” from some people’s perspective. But from other, perhaps more realistic perspectives, it may be more a case of “you reap what you sow.”

Yes, especially since something caused him to think the ‘gentleman’ who was there might be the resident. I don’t know if he went in thinking that might be a possibility because of something he was told, or if it was after he had seen Gates’ ID.

I would imagine that there was a reason for them asking the 911 caller to stay around until after the police arrived, and that would be because the police might want to question her about what she saw. Since, she said that she never would have noticed what was happening if the other lady hadn’t approached her, I figure the ‘concerned’ woman who lived in the neighborhood probably stayed there with her while she waited for police to arrive.

I’ve just begun dating a female Paramedic. She’s been in the biz for 29 years and the stories she has told me thus far would curl your hair and worse. The bad thing is, the public doesn’t even hear about half the stuff that goes on in most every metropolitan area...

I hope there is an elderly lady. If it comes down to a he said/she said between Crowley and Whalen, I think Whalen comes out ahead. I listened to the tape and she’s pretty damn straightforward. I don’t care how crazy Gates acted, if they can prove Crowley changed just one fact or misremembered just one thing, his goose is cooked. Again, it’s almost impossible to believe Crowley would make up the part about talking with Whalen. It makes no sense.
