If it were only Obama, Gates, and Crowley, it would appear as a black majority giving more weight to the Gates’ perspective. So they threw Biden into the mix to even out the sides of the issue. That was EXACTLY my first thought when I saw the pictures. There's absolutely no other reason for Biden to be there--well, except for comic relief, that is.
