I was in the business from the mid-70's until the early 90's, and wheel building was my specialty. Probably did 200 pairs a year at the peak, so I could lace, tension and true in 15 minutes. I cut and threaded my own spokes with one of the Phil Wood machines, buying blank DT's in the 312mm length. Tying and soldering did take time though.
Wow. It took me at least an hour. I'm a 32-hole low-flange guy. It really helped take up the shock coming down hills on rough pavement.
