Senate confirms Sotomayor, first Hispanic justice
The Hill ^ | 08/06/2009 | J. Taylor Rushing

The Senate on Thursday sent Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court with a modest display of bipartisan support, making her the first Hispanic justice and only the third woman to serve on the high court.

The 68-31 vote held few surprises, as a small band of Republicans joined Democrats in confirming her 72 days after President Barack Obama nominated the former prosecutor and judge. Her confirmation paves the way for Sotomayor to begin assembling her staff and prepare for the court to convene in October.

9 Worthless dirtbags ..... lock and load them all.

These are the same jerks that gave us ZERO .. their sniveling liberal leanings frittered 8 years away along with another moderate ....Bush. At least spectator had the balls to admit what he was,(took hinm 30 yeasrs) even though he was forced by finally having to take part in a primary.

I never fear democrats. I fear the stinking moderates and libs with in the republican ranks. I have experienced it continually first hand ...as an Ohioan we have had nothing but spineless moderates and liberals in the State republican machine.

The only conservative we did have ... Blackwell, ... was ignored by tah great conservative (sarcasm) bush who supported the moron Taft. Moderates .... they will kill you every time.

A disgrace .. we got what we deserve for holding our nose and electing the lesser of two stinking evils. Never again ... I leave each non conservative choice unmarked on my ballot.

No time to celebrate. Even though I have Puerto Rican blood like Sotomayor does, she does not share my conservative, constructionist values.

MLK is rolling in his grave.

It’s pretty clear that the idea of “objectivity” is no longer relevant to the Supreme Court and that gender and race are now more important then personal worth.

Maybe, maybe not. We've replaced a quiet left liberal with a functionally illiterate yet loudmouthed left-liberal.

Of course my jackass senators voted to confirm (Snowe, Collins, ME-RINO). However, methinks that a good cross section of the other justices won't cotton to her style. They've already given indications.

The historic nature of this date is that it marks another nail in the coffin of America.

Six Roman Catholics, two Jews and one 86-year-old Protestant.

Things have certainly changed since there was one Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence and two Catholic signers of the Constitution. Catholics make up a little more than 20% of the U.S. population while over half this country is mainline Protestant.

Six out of nine and nobody says anything about it anywhere.

Strange days have found us.

Disappointing is all I can say. Very disappointing. I don’t think she will be as bad as Ruth Buzzie Ginsberg but will be worse than Souter.

Portugal shares the peninsula with Spain. Why would it not also be ‘Hispanic’?

_______________

If the Supreme Court was chosen through random selection or through a quota system, you’d have a point. But the choice is not random.

Catholics and Jews revere higher education. It makes perfect sense that they hold a higher percentage of position that require higher education.
