WASHINGTON (CNN) With the Senate poised to pass a bill Thursday night expanding the "cash for clunkers" program with an infusion of $2 billion, White House aides say President Obama will quickly sign the bill into law by the end of the week so there's no interruption to the popular incentive this weekend.
"He's going to want to make sure the funds are in place by this weekend," one senior White House official noted because of the particularly brisk weekend business the program has sparked.
There has been concern the program is so popular it will run out of its initial $1 billion in funding if the Senate leaves for recess this week without completing a deal. Several top Republicans, including Sen. John McCain of Arizona, raised concerns about pouring more money into the program at a time when the government is deep in debt.

They are going to bail out the post office.
McCain will be the primary beneficiary.
They’ve been doing that for years. It is just now getting pretty expensive. Soon to rival the Automakers despite hefty and frequent rises in Postage.
McCain worried about debt? The guy voted for a $700 billion bailout. I think “Cash for Clunkers” is a terrible idea, but I don’t believe McCain ultimately cares about deficits.
Actually, I do think McCain cares about deficits. He explained that he voted for the bailout because he was told the banks would crash. I’m giving him a pass on this because Bam Bam and Goofy voted for it too. It would’ve passed without his vote anyway. He is probably the only Senator who hasn’t taken pork for his home state and I can assure you, if he had been elected president, that porkulus bill would’ve been vetoed.
Now, if he would just get his head screwed on straight about illegal immigration and drilling in Anwar, he might be good for another 6 years.
I love how he tries to close the door after the horses have left the barn.
The man only acts Conservative when he thinks it will help him in the primary. Once safely in office, he’s all Dimocrat.
