Conservative talk radio has never been more angry and extreme than today. You might think thats a response to the Obama presidency. But even more, conservative talkers are responding to a collapse in advertising revenues.
According to Scott Fybush, the proprietor of North East Radio Watch, talk radio has lost 30-40% of its ad revenues over the past two years.
Further, in an interview with a talk radio trade publication, Talkers Magazine, late last year, Talk Radio Networks CEO Mark Masters said: 2008 will be known as the year that weak syndicated programs began dying off in droves, adding that it has only just begun.
In this environment, radio hosts believe that anger is their only path to survival. If youre not the most extreme person on the radio or making the most outrageous headlines, says Fybush, there is going to be some portion of the base that is going to ignore you and move onto someone who is more extreme.
One of the most civil voices in talk radio, Michael Medved, explains the economic pressure upon the industry. He told NewMajority: In this [economic] environment, you have something of a push to be outrageous, to be on the fringe, because what youre desperately competing for is P-1 listeners [those who tune in most frequently]. The percentage of people on the fringe who are P-1s is quite high, he explained. As a result, talk radio hosts are feeling more pressure than usual to yell harder, scream louder, and insult further. Talk shows are fighting for an ever- smaller pie, [which means that] youve got to be even louder about it because youre trying to get the attention of an ever-smaller niche, said Medved.
All these factors exacerbate the existing negative tendencies of conservative news talk radio. Michael Harrison, editor of Talkers Magazine, notes that news talk radio has traditionally been a street medium [that employs] the language and emotions and attitudes that one would hear on the street, by the fence, in the schoolyard. Of course, schoolyard emotions evoke schoolyard results: a downwards descent into name-calling and fringe politics. Talk radios fascination with the birther movement is the logical end point.
As conservative politics attempts to reach out and rebuild, the incentives for conservative radio hosts point in exactly the opposite direction. The fact of the matter is that the survival of news talk radio depends on ratings and revenue, not on getting people elected, or even on bring right, says Harrison. If the economy worsens, expect more venom on your AM dial.
Talk radio gets angrier as America at large becomes angrier.
invalidated at the title.
I remember when Florida Orange Growers Association and Snapple used to advertise on his program. We bought plenty of both products until the leftists and the homosexuals complained and they cancelled.
Sales of Snapple fell drastically because it's such a mediocre product that we, and no doubt others, bought it just because it sponsored Limbaugh's three hours.
Correlation does not imply causation.
Rush’s revenues are at an all time high.
How are the revenues at Frum’s little site?
I wonder why they used the last 2-year period? It would be interesting to see the numbers since January 20.
Liberal talk shows went busto when the economy was doing well.
Ping me when Rush has to steal from the Boy’s and Girl’s Club to support his show.
WHERE’S THE BARF ALERT/
And what has happened to Goofy Left Radio???
D.C. Station Dumps Its Failing Liberal ‘Obama 1260’ Talk Format
Angry, and justifiably. But extreme? Only if one considers the Constitution and advocacy of limited government extreme.
[conservative] talk radio hosts are feeling more pressure than usual to yell harder, scream louder, and insult further.
As opposed to liberal talk show hosts, who've always been soft spoken and polite. /sarc
I thought this was going to be a piece on the Air America talk host (Mike Malloy or Mallory or some fool name) who said he was hoping to watch Glenn Beck succumb to the same depression that had brought other family members to commit suicide. He said that if Glenn Beck killed himself on air, it would be YouTube’s highest viewed clip.
So your only sources for this are Leftist clown propaganda outlets? Hate to disillusion you but Everyone's revenue, including your beloved Government's, is down 30-40%. That what is know in economic terms as a "recession".
Nice try but we know propaganda when we see it around here.
Barf alert needed
OK... the url for this "source" is fybush.com... of course they would say that conservative talk radio shows are losing ad revenues...
Funny thing about Air America. First they steal taxpayer dollars from a childrens’ charity and then they steal the vote.
And Randi Rhodes made several on air death threats against President Bush.
Conservative talk radio has NEVER been as “angry” as the rhetoric you’ll hear on Left Wing hate radio.
As a casualty of the radio industry, I can say that sales and advertising revenue is down across the board from country to hip-hop. Not just on talk stations.
When you listen to any station and you hear back to back
PSA’s and 1-800-Buy-Our-Crap ads, that tells you the station has not sold all of their available inventory. Also, if music stations are running more ‘commercial-free’ hours, same thing. They ain’t doing it for your listening pleasure. :)
I suspect if you add in the revenue of ErrAmerica then the averages across the spectrum might show such a decline.
And I don’t recall any late night shows putting “Snipers Wanted” over a picture of Obama.
Since you posted this patently false article without a “Barf Alert”, should it be assumed that you agree with its content?
Website Worth: $9,914.13Epic fail.
Daily Pageviews: 4,527
Daily Ads Revenue: $13.58
Did you read Freakanomics?
I like Michael Medvid, but he is such a simpleton ass hat clown sometimes.
Here he provides the requisite sound-bite to be utilized in this leftist screed. And if it isn’t a leftist’s screed, it ought to be.
Folks are angry today, because the government is usurping it’s authority in a manner that has never been seen before in the United States. Medvid attributes the ‘anger’ to a method to attract new listeners. It never dawns on him that this anger could be the result of a government that has never been so out of control.
The lefties and the lunar right can gloss over what is taking place here, mischaracterize it all they like, but it is a grass roots example of folks who simply are not going to take it lying down any longer.
It never ceases to amaze me how people can misread the tea leaves so miserably, when the truth is staring them right in the face.
Medvid, quit playing into the left’s hands. Good grief.
If that’s true, then Air America hosts should be rabid and destroying their studios daily.
Really? a Collapse?
Truth or Propaganda?
Medved also says that it hurts conservativism to call Obama’s policies “socialist”.
Of course Michael Medved was Hillary’s friend in college and worked on staff for one of the farthest left congressmen in the 1970s.
He has moved towards the right but he’s a moderate at best. He just doesn’t swallow all of the liberal kool aid these days.
Michael Medved also believes there are still ghost armies on Civil War battlefields and believes in Bigfoot.
He doesn’t have a lot of room to point out “kooky” beliefs.
Exactly! It’s across the board. And guess who buys most of those PSA spots? The U.S. government, and the propaganda in those spots has gone through the roof.
When listening the WLS on the internet, all they play are PSA spots during their commercials. (at least they were a few years back) I’ve never heard so much leftist suck up in my life.
No. What does it say about talk radio?
RE :”As conservative politics attempts to reach out and rebuild, the incentives for conservative radio hosts point in exactly the opposite direction. Missed here :
1) Talk radio get more popular as their side loses power(which is why you want to always question what you hear) , and less popular as their side has power but flounders
2) Talk radio has never seen more listeners because of #1
3) revenues down simply because commercials everywere are down with Obama economy nothing to do with number of listeners which is up.
They are, well, simply lying.
This is a RINO-inspired hit piece, by which elitists in tassel loafers allow themselves to be used by hard-core leftists in order to stick it to those Bible-and-gun-toting Palinites.
Mak works for David Frum’s New Majority — which should be called the Old Minority.
Ok. That makes more sense.
The Medved mindset is what brought us to this point of ruination, much like the mindset that led to millions of Jews mindlessly shuffling onto the trains to go to their certain slaughter.
Medved is a prime example of people completely unaware of their current position in the flow of history. Dead people walking.
Let’s just think about this a minute...
Is radio ad revenue overall up or down? Has radio advertizing revenue been affected by the global recession?
Might as accurately say that hip-hop music programming is suffering an ad revenue drop.
Lies, damned lies, and statistics....this blogger is so lazy he doesn’t even try to provide actual data.
Little bits of info like this say more to me than the pretty little madeup newswhores.
He’s not doing it for the money. He’s doing it because it’s so awesome to brag about being a Bigtime Blogger when you’re trying to impress single urban women in trendy bistros.
Ya Rush is staving to death. Did you see him on the Greta interview? He was so skinny! Poor Man! ! ! LOL
Nothing, but it is about economic causation and correlations.
Methinks someone is suffering from delusions.
In Boston it got taken off due to low ratings in 2006. Late last year it came back, only because someone did brokered time: PAID a mostly sports station to run it. The result:
a morning show that even libs are decrying as boring, then
stuff like Notfunnie Miller, Thom Fartmann, and Big Dumb
ratings: the station, WWZN, does not even show up (though maybe they don’t subscribe to ratings?) Meanwhile WBZ with
conservative Dan Rea at night: #2 overall. Conservative
WRKO: #4 overall. Boston.
LOL - this is frickin’ hilarious!
Left-wing talk radio defines the words niche and hate-filled, yet not a single, solitary mention in this entire article - only the ‘fringe, kooky’ Conservatives get that honor.
Can’t get any more biased than that, can you?
Here’s the real story; ratings for the top hosts (and stations) have skyrocketed in recent months, for a couple of reasons.
First, with the coronation of the “annointed one” (and the GOP essentially leaderless), talk hosts are filling the vaccum and providing a rallying point for conservatives.
Secondly, Arbitron (the radio ratings firm) recently introduced a new “people meter” system that provides better audience data than ever before. Measurements from the people meter show that talk stations had been under-represented under the old “diary” system. As a result, talk stations have posted higher ratings in most markets. Look at the numbers for KFI in Los Angeles; WLS in Chicago and WABC in New York, to name a few. In most cases, their ratings are running a half-point to a full point higher than under the old system.
So why are revenues down? It’s called the recession. When the economy tanks, ad budgets are among the first to be slashed. Advertisers are spending less money across the board; in fact, the TV networks are having to slash rates to attract sponsors this fall.
I was talking with a sales rep earlier this week for the Rush affiliate in Norfolk, VA (WNIS). He told me that Rush is the highest-rated program on any outlet in their five-station cluster. Rush is the primary reason the station is now #2 in the Norfolk market, and it’s the only “non-urban” station in the Top 5.
