FRESNO, Calif. (AP) -- The California Highway Patrol says a police chase in Dinuba has ended with seven people dead, including four children.

The patrol says Dinuba police were trying to stop a car Saturday afternoon for a traffic infraction.

Patrol Sgt. Jon Baker says the driver went through a stop sign during the pursuit and collided with a pickup truck.

Personally, I have thought for years that most police chases should be banned. This is a case in point—7 people died because the police are chasing a person guilty of a traffic infraction? Good grief!

maybe come up with a technology that tags the car and monitor it with predator drones, and chase the car from a far distance until the car stop, then move in

I believe many of not most California cities do not chase for this very reason.

Yeah, that's right. Let them go. They are just lawbreakers.(/sarcasm)

7 people died because some idiot thought he/she could outrun the cop(s) and drove into a busy intersection without stopping, CRASH. You can commiserate and whine about it, but the facts aren't available, are they? Maybe the van was loaded with drugs? Maybe it was just carrying illegals. Inquiring minds don't really care a whit when idiots take themselves out. The unfortunates who were with them also paid the price, but the cops weren't the reason! Running away from the cops was...

There is a device under development that is essentially a stun gun for cars. It backdoors a high energy magnetic pulse through the ground plane of the car and blows the ignition computer or the ignition system for carbureted cars.

In Fremont where I live a while ago. The police had a gadget that could turn the light in an intersection red. The fire department had it too.

The police in Fremont could have probably prevented this accident.

BTW - Fresno is pretty heavily infested with gangs.

Your suggestion is exactly what needs to be done.

I don't care what the Perp has done, you just can't chase them in the middle of town. This is a very predictable result and it happens all too often.

these chases are nothing more than state sponsored terrorism. Police need to focus on more effective, and smarter ways, as opposed to flashy chases.

Correct tagging illegals in car's with hell-fires would work.

Not saying that this was a chase of illegals, but it was California.

Maybe come up with a technology....

Just read the other day that GM's "OnStar" system now has a feature that allows OnStar,at the direction of the police,to slowly (and,it's claimed, safely) bring to a stop a car equipped with it that's involved in a police chase. And I know that there's at least one European car maker that has a feature that's basically the same as OnStar (same basic technology).

Four of the five children in the pickup were ejected and died at the scene. The fifth child and an adult were airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno with moderate to major injuries. The other adult was taken by ambulance to the same hospital with moderate injuries.

Will know what kind of fool drives around with kids exposed to this shortly.

The police have a duty to apprehend in a manner that is safe for the public. For example, a policeman might really want to shoot a fleeing suspect but he should not fire if it occurs on a crowded sidewalk and many (or even just a few) civilians are going to get caught in the crossfire.

These children got caught in the crossfire. Crossfire is a two way thing.

Maybe the van was loaded with drugs? Maybe it was just carrying illegals.

Is that worth 7 lives? Is it ok for the kids to die if it's about illegals? I don't think so. Maybe for the drugs /sarcasm

A very sad case. But why did the guy run in the first place? I didn't click on the link so I don't know if this question was answered. If the original reason was a minor violation then why not take the $50 ticket instead of running off at 80 mph? Did the guy have drugs in the trunk? Or a dead body? Was the original reason for the stop because the cop ran the plate and found that the car was stolen...or the owner had a murder warrant out on him?

If word gets out that all you have to do to avoid being pulled over is to *refuse* to pull over when you're "lit up" can you imagine the field day that crooks....really *serious* crooks (rapists, murderers, etc) would have?

There is a smarter way than mashing the gas pedal with no regard for the citizens, whom one is paid by, to protect and serve.

How does chasing criminals at high speeds through streets crowded with innocent motorists and bystanders either "serve" or "protect" them? The guy(s) being chased showed only as little concern or regard for innocent lives as did the cops involved in the chase.

The difference is, the cops are supposed to care. They are paid by those innocents to care. To behave without due regard for that fact is an abject abrogation of their sworn duty.

What is the worse outcome, in your inobvious wisdom: a traffic violator gets away scot free, or innocent people are killed making sure they don't get away?

Get real, meatface.

a possible future solution

EMP/HERF/Shock Pulse Generators

Shock wave generators are capable of producing focused acoustic or electromagnetic energy that can break up objects such as kidney stones and other similar materials. EMP generators can produce pulses of electromagnetic energy that can destroy the sensitive electronics in computers and microprocessors. Destabilized LCR circuits can produce multi megawatt pulses by using an explosive wire disruptive switch. These high power pulses can be coupled into antennas, conic sections, horns etc for very directional effects. Research is currently being undertaken to disable vehicles thus avoiding dangerous high speed chases. The trick is to generate a high enough power pulse to fry the electronic control processor modules. This could be a lot simpler if the vehicle was covered in plastic or fiber glass rather than metal. The shielding of the metal body offers a challenge to the researcher to develop a practical system. A system could be built that could do this but would be costly, large and produce collateral damage to friendly targets.

Get real, meatface.

My eldest son is a police Lt. He has done everything from traffic thru knocking down doors for drugs. I disagree with him about many things. But," you can take it to the bank" that cops care.

Your "bleeding heart" is ill-placed. Few people are chased for traffic violations, alone. They are chased because they decided to FLEE!

I do not want the bad guys to win! I do not wish to see innocent people killed or maimed, but the alternative is "chaos". The people operating "without due regard" are the ones BEING CHASED!

Go hit your bong again. It's time to "wake and bake"! My face is just fine!!!

After generations of kids rode in the back of pickups, it’s now against the law in Texas. All passengers in a vehicle must wear seat belts, and there aren’t any in the bed of a pickup.

It seems to me that the cops were not the ones who blew through a stop sign. Why do we always divert blame to people who DIDN’T commit the crime? I guess the guy who ran from the cops was just the victim.

Even after the safety warnings all over them not to do so?

“It will never happen to me” goes in all directions on this one only the kids heartbreakingly had no choice.

Proceed at your own peril rules apply every time you walk out the door. It is just the liberal mindset that the government is there to protect us from everything that always get people into trouble.

Granted, it breaks my heart that four young lives were needlessly lost because of the stupid actions of the best in our society/sarc but the police are in a no win situation whichever way they act.

So those of you who blame only the police can just take a powder as far as I’m concerned.

Better yet, just call them up right now and put your residence and/or business on the do not respond list just in the event you happen to need them one day and stupidly make the 911 call in shear desperation.

You know, kind of like a living will.

It apparently was worth it to the van driver. He made the decision to FLEE! It is his fault that some died along with him, not the pursuit. Your mind is warped.

As an aside, why should more value be placed on "children"? Each person has the same value to God, don't they? You sound like a Dimocrat crying "for the chil'run"...

Hmmm. When I left the States, seatbelts had just become mandatory in my home state. I don’t recall there every having been a lot of discussion about people riding around in the back of a pickup. I come from a redneck place. We looked on riding in the back as a normal thing- not death defying or anything.

What about you? Are you ok with a cop opening fire on a crowded sidewalk when the likelihood of him hitting an innocent is pretty high?

It’s just a question. Nothing to be afraid of here.

OK,fair point. But as I said there's at least one other car company (European) that has a feature that's basically the same thing as OnStar (I own one of its products that has the feature).I don't know if any other car makers, foreign or domestic, have it but the technology *does* exist. It's kinda cool, actually.I used it when I first bought the car at the salesman's suggestion. As soon a connection was made,my *exact* location was displayed on the little screen on the dashboard.I guess that's what makes it possible for them to dispatch an ambulance if you're in an accident.

I don’t think fleeing down a road is the same as someone indiscriminately firing.

In my hypothetical I asked if it was ok to shoot a fleeing suspect on a crowded sidewalk. I didn’t say the fellow was shooting back.

People have funny ideas. It’s ok to plug civilians in the cross-fire? Is that what I’m hearing?

Is me asking a question an ‘outburst’? Does it offend you somehow if I ask? Did you figure you participating here was a one way thing? No cross fire involved? That you would just post and nobody would ask a question or make a comment? When they do does this get your hackles up? LOL. Maybe you should take up knitting or something less confrontational.

I’m not sure what you’re talking about. I was making a friendly conversation about pick-up trucks. I’ve got no problem with you. You could have just kept your comments to pick-up trucks and I would have been happy with that. It’s been a long time since I’ve been in the States. My comment was made in the wondrous/cheeful/friendly sense. More like a Gomer Pyle sort of ‘gollee, where I lived everybody rode around in the back of a pickup truck’.

What’s with people today?

I tell you what buddy. I’m sorry I offended you. You’re obviously pretty highly strung. And I’ve actually got to go to work in a few minutes.

I was completely wrong. I’m glad this fellow plowed into the truck and killed the kids. He should have stopped. The cops don’t have to exercise any responsibility at all. You’re right. I’m wrong. My relatives are wrong. My hair is the wrong color and my sh1t smells really bad.

So the police are just indiscriminately speeding down a highway endangering people and damned be the one that gets in the way. Great analogy couselor.

The police in California purposely give these idiots who flee plenty of room to avoid pushing them speeding into an intersection, it is the idiot they are trying to stop who makes that decision.

If I’m on that sidewalk and some loon is coming at me with a pistol firing away, you’re damed right I would trust the training and ability of the officer to take him down than to rely on the luck the SOB couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. It would be my luck he was aiming for the farmhouse.
