RED ALERT: White House Has Secret Plan To Harvest Personal Data From Social Networking Websites
National Legal and Policy Center ^ | August 31, 2009 | Ken Boehm

Posted on 09/02/2009 3:38:34 AM PDT by PowerPro

NLPC has uncovered a plan by the White House New Media operation to hire a technology vendor to conduct a massive, secret effort to harvest personal information on millions of Americans from social networking websites.

The information to be captured includes comments, tag lines, emails, audio, and video. The targeted sites include Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, Flickr and others – any space where the White House “maintains a presence.”

In the course of investigating procurement by the White House New Media office, NLPC discovered a 51-page solicitation of bids that was filed on Friday, August 21, 2009. Filed as Solicitation # WHO-S-09-0003, it is posted at FedBizzOps.com. Click here to download a 51-page pdf of the solicitation.

While the solicitation specifies a 12-month contract, it allows for seven one-year extensions. It specifies no dollar cap. Other troubling issues include:

extremely broad secrecy terms preventing the vendor from disclosing to the public or the media what information is being captured and archived (page 7, “Restriction Against Disclosure”)

wholesale capturing of comments by non-White House staff on publicly accessible sites

capturing of content of any type (text, graphics, audio, or video)

capturing of comments by both Obama critics and supporters, with no restriction as to how the White House would use the information.

This is the third controversy involving the White House internet operations in less than a month. First, Obama’s New Media operation asked supporters to send information about critics of the White House health care effort to a White House email. This provoked a storm of criticism and the White House retreated. Then large number of people complained of getting email spam from the White House supporting the President’s health care position. Again the White House was forced to back down.

That language is still in the RFQ.

Um, no it's not. Read the two, the language changes.... as the phrase, "maintains a presence" is never used- not even once- in the pre-solicitation. This may seem like nothing but that term is very broad and far reaching!!!

Not sure..I am no constitutional expert but I can see why it would be a bad idea for the Supremes to be able to initiate proceedings. Seperation of Powers, etc.

There are plenty of conservative/liberterian/independent legal groups that can start taking this stuff to court though. They need to start now.

This is equally alarming! Where does the DNC get off using such incendiary language about law-abiding citizens engaging in their civic responsibility to question legislators about proposed laws affecting the entire population of the US for generations to come.

Moderate Dems must be feeling a little queasy about who they voted for, wouldn’t you think?

Freedom of speech means nothing to these thugs.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Not only that, the WH has legal acess to a data base gathered already by census workers on the GPS location of every citizens home, accurate within 40 feet. The can find where anyone lives within mere seconds.

The Obama thugs are getting ready for warfare. This is the intel phase. You will never know why all of a sudden the IRS is auditing you when they never have before under guise of "normal".You will never know why all of a sudden, you have vandalism committed on your home. You will never know why all of your pets were poisoned or shot. You will never know why your passport application has been refused. You will never know why Homeland Securoty is tapping your phones.

This is getting out of hand here, and needs to be stopped.

The privacy barriers between government and individuals are disappearing. We will have unreasonalble searches, and in some cases unreasonable seizures of assets.

Isay if the Obama government needs to gather this data, they FIRST NEED A SEARCH WARRANT.

This thread is from yesterday afternoon on this topic:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2329698/posts

The article was Titled
“White House Seeks to Capture and Archive Citizens’ Comments on its Facebook, YouTube, Myspace”
http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/53363
From: CNS ^ | 9/1/09 | Fred Lucas

This article today left out “its” from the title. Please look for yourself.

I am not a fan of the current resident so I am NOT trying to defend -I’m pointing out a difference in meaning. I read through most of the comments and didn’t see anything pointing to yesterday’s thread.

There are enough things to fear and loathe about bamie and the purple shirts, and we have to keep information as clear and honst as possible.

Just FYI.

Freedom of speech means nothing to these thugs.

Au contraire, my FRiend. It means everything that they loath and the only successful act to stop their agenda dead.

Without the First Amendment, their propaganda is the law and therefore, they will bypass the Second Amendment and disarm the citizenry. If they are successful, they will be home free and 0b0z0 will be our first African-Anti-American President-for-life.

IOW, I agree with your statement, with some expansion, however. :-)

To be honest, if you are stupid enough to put your life on Facebook or whatever, you have only yourself to blame.

If you want to view it that way. I kind of want to restrict the government's intrusion of my privacy and not restrict myself from the government. You know, the whole 1st ammendment thingy

“Regarding salty talk aimed at the president (or other officials) vs visits from the SS”

It is impossible for the SS (or anyone else) to locate the whereabouts of freepers who use Tor to browse/post here. And it really is not rocket science to set it up, hit the Tor button and post.

A year ago there was a group of criminals on Usenet using Tor & remailers to exchange illegal materials. About 20 of out of the 60 users in the group were using Tor, the others were using SSL with private SSL providers like privacy.li

Guess which group got busted. Yes, the ones using SSL. Everyone else using Tor escaped from the FBI/Aussie LEA because there was no way to trace them through an onion-routing network.

THIS SHOULD LET EVERYONE KNOW THIS IS A HUGE PROGRAM:

“(K) Provide a web-based tool for government employees to administer and manage this record keeping. (i.e. add new publicly accessible websites to the crawl or adjust the crawl frequency.) Provide a minimum of 10 simultaneous login accounts.”

In other words the WH wants to have a minimum of 10 government employees simultaneously adding web sites to crawl to this program. If this is about archiving the 7 sites they are operating why then do they need this capability?!?

From the CNS article: ‘The document also says, “The contractor shall include the information posted by non-EOP persons on publicly-accessible web sites where the EOP maintains a presence.”’

I see a huge loophole here to allow the contractor to gather data. For example: The White House has a FaceBook page, but the “publicly-accessible web site(s) where the EOP maintains a presence” is FACEBOOK. It seems to open the door for recording data from all over FaceBook.
