The article says they will not provide an alternative “opt-out” space for kids who do not want to see the speech. Unless I missed it, though, there wasn’t a threat of punishment or discipline for any child not in attendence, so absolutely keep your kid home that day.

Of course, this speech will be recorded for future viewing, which they will likely spring on the absentees without notice at some point in the future. If your kids have cells tell them to text or call you if this happens on Day 2 of school then go get them for a family emergency.

Don’t tar the entire state with the decision of one county - I know of one county, Pinellas, that has made the day an ‘Excused Absence’ day. Like many other states, it is the county by county school boards that appear to be the deciding authorities.

I'm in Silicon Valley. This morning I called my kid's school to enquire if they would be showing this to my son, of if they were opting out like other schools and districts were?
