Bumping. I can’t believe this story didn’t get more play here at FR.

Here’s a rundown of the Presidents and years these seven served as DCIA:

Michael Hayden - G. W. Bush 2006-2009
Porter Goss - G. W. Bush 2004-2005
George Tenet - Clinton and G.W. Bush 1997-2004
John Deutch - Clinton 1995-1996
R. James Woolsey - Clinton 1993-1995
William Webster - Reagan and G.H.W.Bush 1987-1991
James R. Schlesinger - Nixon 73

The DCIA before Schlesinger is deceased (Helms). The other DCIA’s from Schlesinger forward, not among the seven, are:

William Colby 1973–1976 - Deceased

George H. W. Bush 1976–1977 - Staying above the fray as a former President, which used to be the universal route taken by former Presidents. Too bad Jimmy Carter doesn’t take a hint.

Stansfield Turner 1977–1981 - An Annapolis buddy of Carter’s, regarded by many as a complete fool for his over-reliance on technical means of intelligence gathering (satellites, SIGINT, etc), and his undercutting of the HUMINT elements at CIA. This has caused us many, many problems in the decades since.

William J. Casey 1981–1987 - Deceased

William H. Webster 1987–1991 - Still active in government as Chairman of the Homeland Security Advisory Council. Probably staying out of it due to his involvement there.

Robert M. Gates 1991–1993 - Obama’s SecDef. No surprises he made no public comment.

And that’s it.

So really, the only former DCIA’s to have *not* signed on to this statement are either still in gov’t, are a former President, or are Stansfield Turner, the worst DCIA ever according to many.

Whoops! Mea culpa.

My conclusion still holds, though.

Did anyone else note that George H. W. Bush didn’t sign on?

And the last page that wasn’t shared with the public:
