Pregnant war widow Breeanna Till left penniless

SIX months after her husband was killed fighting in Afghanistan, Breeanna Till is broke - let down by the government that promised solemnly to look after her.

Heavily pregnant with the child Sergeant Brett Till will never know, the Sydney widow fears becoming like "a single mum on the dole" when she gives birth in a few weeks.

The $905 weekly pay her husband brought home lasted just a fortnight after he died in a roadside bomb explosion. In its place, the military gave Mrs Till a compensation payment of just $305 a week.

Sgt Till, 31, was a much-respected explosive ordnance disposal technician from the Incident Response Regiment, stationed at Holsworthy.

On March 19, he was with a group of soldiers conducting "route clearance" work in southern Afghanistan when an improvised explosive device was found.

The US military does and they all but order you to take it if you deploy anywhere, really if you are on active duty. It is actually a very good deal and certainly a small but significant benefit to being either active or reserve. Having said that, I’ll leave it to your UK military experts to say what is available to them.

“I’d be surprised if Sergeant Till didn’t have SGLI.”

I would be veery surprised, as this guy is Australian, serving Australia.

Thanks for clearing that up. It seems that with some competent financial advice she'll get by. I always appreciate getting the facts about life 'down under' from you.

Best,

L

I’d be surprised if Sergeant Till didn’t have SGLI.

Sgt Till wasn't an US servicemember, but an Australian servicemember, so I would be surprised if he did have SGLI...

god bless the military but sometimes they and some of their supporters sound like card-carrying socialists, wanting the government to do everything for ever for them.

she needs to get a j.o.b like everyone else.

I’ve already privately replied to the first member that pointed this out. it was near 1 in the morning and I was half asleep.

Sergeant Till was not a US citizen or member of our Armed Services — I see that now that I’m awake.
