COPENHAGEN, Sept 30 (Reuters) - Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara warned on Wednesday the 2016 Olympics could be the last Games, with global warming an immediate threat to mankind.

Tokyo is bidding to host the 2016 summer Olympics with Chicago, Rio de Janeiro and Madrid also in the running. The International Olympic Committee will elect the winning candidate during its session on Oct. 2 in the Danish capital.

"It could be that the 2016 Games are the last Olympics in the history of mankind," Ishihara told reporters at a Tokyo 2016 press event ahead of the vote.

"Global warming is getting worse. We have to come up with measures without which Olympic Games could not last long.

It’s totally nuts. Everyone knows the world is going to end in 2012.

Ya beat me to it!

That’s some bizarre posturing. “These will be the last games ever because of global warming, and since we’re so frickin’ smart about this, give them to us.”

If it’s the last it’ll be because cities finally realize how much money they lose on the Olympics, not the weather.

No track and field records in Chicago will be legitimate. They will all carry the dreaded “wind-assisted” label. So why bother?

Amen, bring the Olympics HOME to Greece and the winter games to Switzerland.

Gosh, what a Eurocentrist you are. Or should that be Eurocentric-ist?

You're right; they were created in Greece and should damn well be held there. If the Greek mountains don't lend themselves to the winter games, Switzerland is a reasonable alternative - if the Greeks themselves approve.

Tokyo’s governor is wrong about this. The last summer games will be the 2012 games, because the world is ending in December of 2012. It’s pretty much a lock - I saw it on the History Channel. The Mayan calendar, Nostradamus, alignment of the stars and other factors confirm this.

> I’d be perfectly happy if the USA never ever again wasted tax money on hosting another Olympics. Let someone else pick up the tab for once.

The best part? Even if we don’t win the venue..we still go to a foreign country and win the medal count 95% of the time in it’s history. Check out the medal count history..USA dominance is simply amazing.

Even more when you consider how many of the medal winning athletes who compete for other countries, live and train here in the US.

“IO hope it is. The Intl Olympic Committee is totally corrupt.”

Yes and after all the cheating about age and how people are turned into robots for the event, oh and let’s not forget the exclusive art of using steriods that can’t be detected. Let’s end them altogether.

It’s that darn torch, they run it around the hinterlands and then keep it burning for days and nights. It’s insane.

The 2020 Olympics will be in Fairbanks because of global warming. It will host the summer and winter games simutaneously. The 2024 will be hosted jointly by Iceland and Greenland.

except USA athletes are forced to go through super enhanced security for their own safety.

A fixed location would help mitigate this.

You participated in the olympics and got nothing out of it? My friend was a 400 meter hurdler in Mexico and his career resulted from his participation and as a track athelete. H will always remember fondly participating even though he did not medal. Too bad you had such a bad experience.
