President Obama announced he plans to nominate Patrick Corvington to be chief executive of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which oversees Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America. Big Government readers will remember that the Corporation assumed a prominent role on the infamous NEA Conference call, where the Corporations Nell Abernathy joined White House and NEA officials to nudge artists to produce works supporting the Obama Administrations legislative priorities.
Although the charity Corvington works for, Annie E. Casey Foundation of Baltimore, Maryland, has granted funding to ACORN during his tenure, it is unclear if Corvington has ties to ACORN.
Nonetheless, Corvington is part of the same cluster of organizations that provides financial and other support for ACORN which is a longtime fixture in the activist community.
Since 2001 the Annie E. Casey Foundation has pumped at least $1,705,500 into the ACORN network, according to philanthropy database information.
Of the $1,705,500, at least $850,500 was earmarked for ACORN operations in Baltimore, Maryland, home of the ACORN branch office first shown in the recent undercover videos that debuted on BigGovernment.com. Those videos show James OKeefe and Hannah Giles pretending to be a pimp and a prostitute and receiving mountains of advice on evading laws pertaining to tax evasion and prostitution (among other things).
The Annie E. Casey Foundation is a major funder of other groups on the left.
Looking at just the first letter of the alphabet, its grant recipients are labor federation AFL-CIO, abortion rights think tank Alan Guttmacher Institute, and liberal policy shop the Aspen Institute.
Although most of its grants go to groups on the political left, the foundation has funded at least one think tank on the political right. It has provided a few grants to the American Enterprise Institute.
I can’t tell you how many ways this creeps me out.
We really have to watch these slimebags and see where they go and what new organizations they join/administer.
The Anne E. Casey foundation (D and Tax Free) bankrolled the voter registration of thousands of illegal immigrants in Maryland, and in effect changed the outcome of the last two elections there. It is an ongoing criminal enterprise that should be investigated and closed down.
Another dirtbag appointed by Obama
Who is he? Why is an ACORN nutcase allowed to do anything but hard time?
Is this the guy who is going to heading up the “mandatory” volunteering that we all will be doing? /s
You beat me to it. Let’s start researching him.
Preliminary and cursory examination does not show any real ties to ACORN. His primary claim to fame is association with the Annie E. Casey Foundation, founded by the first owner and CEO of UPS.
Affiliated with the Casey Foundation, (PA Dem Senator, Bob Casey,) AND:
With a working knowledge of and personal alignment with the Casey Foundation mission to effectively meet the needs of vulnerable families and children, Patrick Corvington began the position of Senior Associate in the Leadership Development Unit in late May 2005. His background with community-based organizations underscores an understanding of and commitment to helping mission-critical grantees build their capacities around executive transition and leadership development. While Mr. Corvington works to operationalize a plan for executive transition and other capacity-building efforts within grantee organizations, he is also shaping and implementing plans to assist non-profits create a diverse and talented pipeline of new leaders, especially those of color.
A history of on-the-ground direct services to underserved individuals and migrant families as well as managing projects from conception to implementation has equipped Mr. Corvington with a wealth of skills and experiences ideally suited to his position. Just prior to joining the Foundation, he was Executive Director of Innovation Network, a nonprofit agency whose mission is to build the evaluation capacity of the nonprofit sector. Mr. Corvington has also served as a Research Associate with the Metropolitan Housing and Communities Center at The Urban Institute where he conducted housing policy research and worked to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations in Russia. Other roles have included Coordinator of Multicultural Affairs at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County; and Interim Director at the Sykesville Group Shelter Home for adjudicated youth. He also has worked as a patient advocate in a community-based HIV/AIDS clinic; traveled the east coast migrant stream as a case manager for migrant workers; and volunteered his time living and working in the infirmary of a shelter for homeless persons.
A native of Haiti, Mr. Corvington is fluent in French and French Creole, and is conversant in Spanish. He received his BA in Sociology from the University of Maryland, College Park, and earned his MA in Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University, where he received the National Minority Leadership Fellowship from the Kellogg Foundation. Mr. Corvington has been an Echoing Green selection judge twice.
I am beginning to wonder if there is really anyone dumber than the current POTUS.
Born in Haiti and raised in Africa, Corvington is also sensitive to issues of ethnic diversity in nonprofits and in philanthropy as is evidenced in his role as advisor to the American Humanics Nonprofit Workforce Coalition.
Corvington is a seasoned field researcher with extensive experience in community development, social service delivery, and evaluation. Prior to joining Innonet in 2003, he served on the research staff at the Urban Institute, where he focused on social service development and delivery in newly redeveloped public housing and worked with housing authorities to assess and develop their case management capabilities and infrastructure.
Before joining Urban, Corvington worked as a case manager in a community-based healthcare organization where he was charged with linking HIV-impacted clients with social services provided by local government agencies as well as other community-based organizations and for the Baltimore City Health Department, where he was responsible for linking the provision of public health services for clients on as well as off site.
A native of Haiti, Mr. Corvington holds a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University, where he was a Kellogg Fellow.
I agree, I don’t think anyone from Acorn should be moved to a Government position.
On a different subject, can someone tell me why the Administration calls it ‘The Corporation’?
From BOTH bios:
Born in Haiti and raised in Africa
Mr. Corvington has also served as a Research Associate with the Metropolitan Housing and Communities Center at The Urban Institute where he conducted housing policy research and worked to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations in Russia.
Oh yeah. THIS is WONDERFUL!
Back to the pepcid. Knew I couldn’t make it through the damn day..
The Social Innovation Fund, which will be administered by the Corporation, is one of the key new initiatives of the Obama Administration.
FY2010 budget to provide $50 million in seed capital for his Social Innovation Fund, fulfilling a campaign pledge. The Fund will identify the most promising, results-oriented non-profit programs and expand their reach throughout the country.
This is a dramatically different way for the government to do business and it reflects the Presidents new governing approach — finding and scaling the best social innovations; partnering with those who are leading change in their communities; and creating a policy environment for all these innovations to thrive.
our nations most serious social problems:
Careers focused on lifting up our communities whether helping transform troubled schools or training workers for green jobs or helping low-income families access health care are not always obvious. But, at a time when our nation is facing unprecedented challenges, encouraging careers in public service and social innovation are more important than ever.
The Social Innovation Fund will build a “pipeline” of programs that have demonstrated results and are ready to spread across the country to meet community needs. Now, more than ever, we need to invest in programs that work and find innovative, effective solutions to our nations most serious challenges.
