Packing heat may backfire. People who carry guns are far likelier to get shot – and killed – than those who are unarmed, a study of shooting victims in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has found.

No, being in an area where one is highly motivated to carry a gun, i.e. dangerous neighborhoods, increases your chances of getting shot.

Someone has confused cause and effect. People who believe they have an increased risk of being shot at are more likely to arm themselves. Drug dealers don’t get shot at because they’re armed.

A look at the article, it would seem that a lot of these were thug wannabes who failed to advance in their career choice.

Packing heat may backfire. People who carry guns illegally are far likelier to get shot – and killed – than those who are unarmed, a study of shooting victims in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has found.

Corrected.

They’re misspelling the title of their publication. “Non-Scientist” starts N-O-N-, not N E W.

On the other hand, NOT carrying a gun ALSO increases your risk of getting shot and killed. I think they cancel each other out.

While it may be that the type of people who carry firearms are simply more likely to get shot, it may be that guns give a sense of empowerment that causes carriers to overreact in tense situations, or encourages them to visit neighbourhoods they probably shouldn't, Branas speculates.

"While it may be that the type of women who take out restraining orders against ex's are simply more likely to be the targets of violent lunatics, it may be that the restraining orders give a false sense of security that causes them to remain less vigilant, or encourages them not to stay cowering in their homes with their fingers poised over the 9-1-1 speed dial button."

< /s>

Since when are there neighborhoods we "probably shouldn't visit"? I was under the impression that this was a free country where we have the right to go into any neighborhood we choose.

I am sure these stats are skewed by all of the gang violence that occurs between rival factions who.....yup, you guessed it...carry guns. Of course, this fact is buried nice and deep in the stats so the author can imply that carrying a gun is more dangerous than not.

Only if you’re using it to rob someone who is also carrying.

I’m sure they took a very scientific sample of drug dealers in the Philadelphia ‘hood. They may have included a few in Pittsburgh just for good measure.

Overall, Branas's study found that people who carried guns were 4.5 times as likely to be shot and 4.2 times as likely to get killed compared with unarmed citizens.

Armed gangbangers killing other armed gangbangers. No mystery here.

That is surely true of criminals -home invaders and robbers- who carry guns in the commission of their crimes. Intended victims who a have guns close to hand tend to shoot the gun carrying bad guys. It is those poor victimized crime workers that are mourned by the sort of folks who write articles like this one.

In Philadelphia, most of the gun-toters are gang-banging Obamanoids.

and they get shot a lot by each other thus loading up the stats.

While it may be that the type of people who carry firearms are simply more likely to get shot

This is all in Phily. It should state that gangbangers are more likely to get shot because they are shooting at each other. Mumia also shot a cop who was carying a gun.

I wonder if the study includes soldiers and jihadis in war zones.

Actually inaccurate on both ends

Compares the percentage carrying guns in assaults (FBI figures say 70% of those, whether victim or assaulter, already have felony records, so are carring illegally) with those in the general population (but there only those carring legally can be measured, so underestimates guns carried)
