Defeat in Maine a harsh blow to gay-marriage drive

The stars seemed aligned for supporters of gay marriage. They had Maine's governor, legislative leaders and major newspapers on their side, plus a huge edge in campaign funding. So losing a landmark referendum was a devastating blow, for activists in Maine and nationwide.

In an election that had been billed for weeks as too close to call, Maine's often unpredictable voters repealed a state law Tuesday that would have allowed same-sex couples to wed. Gay marriage has now lost in all 31 states in which it has been put to a popular vote — a trend that the gay-rights movement had believed it could end in Maine.

"Today's heartbreaking defeat unfortunately shows that lies and fear can still win at the ballot box," said Rea Carey, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

With 87 percent of the precincts reporting, gay-marriage foes had 53 percent of the vote. They prevailed in many of Maine's far-flung small towns and lost by a less-than-expected margin in the state's biggest city, Portland.

"The institution of marriage has been preserved in Maine and across the nation," declared Frank Schubert, chief organizer for the winning side.

Attention will now turn to other states, including California — where Schubert was an instrumental strategist a year ago in the successful campaign to overturn cost-ordered same-sex marriage.

Gay-rights activists have been planning to go back to the ballot in California, either in 2010 or 2012, in another attempt to legalize gay marriage. But the Maine result was not the victory they had been hoping for to fire up their troops.

I agree with you, although I wouldn’t jettison the moral/religious argument completely.

But, sexual attraction exists for an obvious biological reason. Men and women have complementary parts for an obvious reason. Those are cold, hard facts. Whatever dysfunction causes people of the same sex to try to imitate intercourse, we, as a society, should not embrace it and pretend it is “normal.”

I don’t think it’s a sin - it’s just so damm ridiculous that’s the reason it should not be allowed. It’s silly - it becomes a parody! Have you seen some of these gay marriage pics - pretty freaking oddly hilarious!

re: Domestic partnership, which includes everything but the title "marriage". . . True, but it's that title of marriage that the gay movement desperately wants. That title gives them "legitimacy" and societal "acceptance".

Sooner or later....the planets will align, and they'll win one. Then they'll be 1 for 48 (or 60, or 100) and will hail this as a "major strategic victory" "signifying a huge shift in society". And Please Ignore the oh-fer 50 or so before.

Where I work, if I fail at something 31 times, the management asks me to stop.

Actually, usually, they ask after the first couple of failures.

I think you HAVE to use God in the argument, but in a legal not religious way. To wit:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights...That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.”

This is a resounding statement of the importance of the Natural Law and the fact that rights are endowed us by God and NOT by the state. Neither the state nor the people by ANY process can vote themselves a fictitious right to marry a member of the same sex.

I know most folks who are not religious but are totally opposed to their agenda.

It takes a man and a woman to bring this next generation not two men and that is what nature intended.

therefore what they do is an un-natrual act whether they like that fact or not it is a fact they cannot run away from
