Fort Hood Shooting Suspect Awake, Talking
Wall Street Joural ^ | November 9, 2009 | Staff

FORT HOOD, Texas – A U.S. Army hospital spokesman said the man suspected in a deadly shooting spree at Fort Hood is conscious and able to talk.

Dewey Mitchell, a spokesman at Brooke Army Medical Center, said Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan remains in stable condition. Mr. Mitchell said Maj. Hasan has been awake and able to talk since he was taken off a ventilator Saturday.

Maj. Hasan is at Brooke Medical Center in San Antonio, about 150 miles southwest of Fort Hood.

Authorities say the 39-year-old Maj. Hasan opened fire at a processing center Thursday at Fort Hood, the country's largest military installation. Thirteen people were killed and 30 were wounded.

The rampage ended when civilian police shot Maj. Hasan.

Army officials said their investigators increasingly believe that Maj. Hasan was the lone gunman in the carnage. "Right now we're operating on the belief that he acted alone and had no help," said a military official familiar with the Army Criminal Investigation Division probe.

To help settle the question more definitively, the official said, military investigators were trying to determine where Maj. Hasan had purchased his handguns and the large quantity of ammunition used in the attack.

At least one weapon, an expensive semiautomatic handgun, came from gun store Guns Galore in Killeen, where the Army base is located, law-enforcement officials said. A person who answered the phone at the store Friday said it was cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and had been asked by law-enforcement officials not to comment.

Military and civilian law-enforcement authorities are examining Maj. Hasan's phone and computer records to see if he had communicated with any extremist elements in the days before the attack, according to a military official familiar with the matter.

So, they know who bought it, what kind of gun it was, what he paid, and where he bought it. To my knowledge, Texas does not require handgun registration. So, just how did they know all of this???

Even with teh FBI involved, teh crime took place on a military installation, by a person subject to teh UMCJ. He will be tried in a court-martial. If he isn’t; I’ll be very surprised.

In a courts-martial, only a preponderance of evidence is required, not “beyond reasonable doubt”.

The first general officer in Nidal’s chain of command has convening authority, no one else. That means some two-star in the medical command likely has the ball.

He is probably asking for a Koran and a Muslim lawyer. I think Obama might be available if he can squeeze a teleprompter into the hospital room.

Hah -- same thing I said to my wife this morning!

I hope they're waterboarding the little turd, too.

That’s actually how the mideival assassin cult started in the hills of present-day Iran. The dear leader invited initiates to a banquet, drugged the food, and then had them moved to a garden full of booze hot chicks and nubile young boys, let them do whatever they wanted for a day, drugged them, and brought them back to earth. He told them this was a taste of paradise, and they believed him, cheerfully dying for him.

Now do the same thing in reverse, have a provocateur give a would-be jihadi a bogus suicide vest, have it contain just enough explosives to knock him out, and bring him to the paradise of Helen Thomas, Janet Reno, Nancy Pelosi and Tiny Tim “virgins”. As they scream in agony, spray them with knock-out gas, bring them back down to “earth” and tell them that they’ve just tasted a piece of hell, and this is what awaits them if they don’t change their evil ways. Heck, convert them to scientology. Anything would be an improvement.

And the head honcho from the army will be with him. He actually said losing diversity in the army would be worse than the 13 dead. If he had served under George Washington he’d have been brought before a firing squad and shot for treason. I hope the ghosts of the 13 victims haunt this bastard ‘til the day he dies. He’s an anatomically correct G.I. Joe.

If I was an officer or a non-com I’d turn in my resignation today. And the letter would say I agree with the army high command that we need more diversity so I’m going to leave to make room for another muslim.

No registration for pre-owned weapons. However, we do require the standard FBI background search when purchasing a new weapon, which leads to a whole slew of questions. Given what the FBI knew about his background, how did he manage to pass the background check?

You want to make him talk? Threaten to remove that thingy between his legs and he’ll talk. The prospect not to meet the 72 virgins will drive him insane.

His choice of weapon, a FN 5.7 pistol says a lot about his intent and state of mind. Not the first choice for plinking, competition or home defense for that matter.

The amazing thing to me is that..
A. He found so much ammo for it.
B. He was able to afford it.

IIRC, they are required by law to dump that data.

Given what the FBI knew about his background, how did he manage to pass the background check?

No kidding, considering his associations and his pronouncements. Unfortunately, it's hard to come up with a determinant there. Recall how slippery a slope is defining a person as "mentally unfit" to own a firearm. You'd want a hearing before such a determination, wouldn't you?
