McCain takes up 'death panel' charge on floor By J. Taylor Rushing - 11/21/09 06:24 PM ET

Former GOP presidential nominee John McCain (Ariz.) used Saturday's Senate floor debate on healthcare reform to repeat the controversial "death panel charge" that his running mate, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, has been heavily criticized for.

In a scripted exchange with Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso (Wyo.), McCain assailed a recent recommendation by a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services panel that women receive regular mammograms once they reach 50 years of age, instead of the traditional 40. McCain used that to revive a criticism of the Democratic-written healthcare bill that Palin raised over the summer, that advisory boards could create polices that would make them become "death panels."

"Isn't that the kind of advisory board that this legislation could put into law, that those kinds of mandates could come down which could literally jeopardize the health and lives of Americans?" McCain asked Barrasso.

Barrasso's wife is a breast cancer survivor, a fact he referenced.

"This type of legislation would have cost my wife her life," Barrasso said. "She is a breast cancer survivor, diagnosed by a routine screening mammogram. And she was in her 40s when that mammogram was performed... It was a screening mammogram that saved her life."

A grinning McCain then asked, "You would not describe that as a death panel?"

Barrasso replied, "Some people might."

today it is the norm but I will not stand by while this great country go the same way as my old country

Losing both would be a real tragedy. Former Britannia is, by and large, gone. America has some chance. It's going to be a fight between the people and the mandarins they keep electing to office.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve noticed a slight backing off by Palin on the “death panel” term, as though she is just the tiniest bit afraid of overstating things. IMO, especially now that they’ve voted to debate this bill, we should repeat those two words ad infinitum until they sink into the American consciousness. Call it what it is! Don’t shrink from using the strongest possible terms on ANY and ALL components of this bill. I want to see this bill deconstructed sentence by sentence and ripped to pieces over the next few weeks.

She has said it repeatedly. She hasn’t stopped saying it. She says it on every facebook posting and also on interviews

McCain is strategizing and, once again, is “using” Sarah Palin.

Your post is good. Can we boil it down to a single sentence?

Like: Years ago, death panels denied dialysis to patients who died and these death panels are returning under obuma.

You know more about this than me. Whattya think?

McCain is a little late to the party. He must be getting his butt kicked in Arizona. Don’t trust the sell out. He will just disappoint when it matters.

Okay, okay. I just had not heard her use the term in her recent interviews. IIRC, she quite brilliantly invented the term “death panel.” I want that term to be incessantly hammered home, that’s all.

It can still be stopped—at the next cloture vote. Reid doesnt yet have the votes to pass the bill.

Really? It took 60 votes to get it this far, and there were only 3 Dem Senators who had to be bribed...to pass it he needs less, like 50, correct? He can find more bribes to add if he has to, I can assure you.

No, he will need 60 again for a motion to end debate and take an actual vote on the bill. That's when Lincoln, Nelson, Landrieu and Lieberman (among others) are threatening to jump ship over the public option and/or abortion.

I think the most likely outcome is for the public option to be removed entirely so they can pass something in the Senate. The House would then have to decide whether it will go along. If not, no law.

Bottom line, this travesty has a long way to go.

also I don’t mind you asking at all.

I wish more folks would wake up and see how this will change this country for ever.

For instance I will give one example quickly.
My mother went to get checked for cancer. She went in Nov a couple of years ago and by the time after waiting for her results and checks (so on because of waiting lines) she got her results in nov the next year.
In that time her husband died of cancer .

This year she was in salford royal hospital.
She had to sahre a room with 15 other women.
No TV for her own.
No phone
No privacy
just a curtain when the Doc came arouund and at weekends there was no Doc on duty due to budget cuts.
Docs were only on emergency.

She saw a woman have a baby in the hallway and had nurses who could hardly speak English because the Uk is short of nurses so they get them from third world countries.

For an ambulance it took two hours to come.

I ahve many examples of how Govt does not work for health care but one only has to look at how they are now saying that a woman does not need to go for a chest exam at 40 nor does she have to get checked once a year.

To think that there are women out there who are so dumb that they would rather believe a letter at the end of a name then to save their or others lives by making a stand and saying no we are not a cult we can think for ourselves

"It can still be stopped—at the next cloture vote. Reid doesnt yet have the votes to pass the bill. "

That may be so. However, I was really referring to the longer-term future.

Over the past 100 years, almost every initial specific Marxist overture to snatching away freedom has been completely or partially defeated. They really do not care, scrupulously keeping their eye on the bigger ideological picture...and in virtually all cases they have eventually gained their goals through incrementlism and/or compromise.

There is nothing in the behavior of the current GOP hierarchy's genetic political makeup that suggests that, just like the thousands of Marxist-driven laws and regulations already in place through GOP incompetence and cowardice and the serfs ignorance, the Marxist healthcare camel will be denied getting its nose into the tent of the American culture before the 2010 elections.

IAC, just like most of the Marxist ideology that now holds us, however softly, in its grip, the federal courts will step in when needed and provide whatever political victories the Marxists need but cannot get through the Congress or with support of the electorate. Particularly important is the huge increase in federal court judges now being implemented so as to dilute all the circuit courts in order to bring them up to the ideological standards of the Ninth....

Only an absolutely total flush of all the Marxists, both demoncrat and the GOP closet-Marxists, would provide a slight glimmer of hope. IMHO, 2010 is the very last chance at a somewhat fair and honest national election in the U.S.

If we blow this one, there will never be another. We will be faced with, as yet unimagined by the serfs, tyrannical processes and unconstitutional laws that will assure many more terms by obamao and his cronies.

This healthcare weapon is important to those who seek to rule us completely. They can regulate everything we do in our daily existence as a "healthcare matter". More importantly, they can greatly increase the rate at which the older generations (educated before the 1960's takeover of public education by the government and conversion to Fabian-driven indoctrination centers) are disappearing from the scene. This will make imposition of final rule over the brain-washed masses educated in government asylums a very smooth transition. None of those pesky old-timers who are always mumbling and rambling on about stuff like freedom, liberty, individuality, and the Constitution.

History is on my side in this argument...100-years of brilliantly planned incrementalism has now been supplanted by the endgame theorized in the late 1800's.

Sadly to say, to prevent losing this endgame, it is probably as much as 80% certain that "the tree will have to be watered" once more....

Sure. I like to spell it out with the historical context so people understand--there have been death panels before, for necessary reasons, but now there will be death panels again, for artificial reasons.

My goal is to inform people that this is not merely a right wing crackpot invention. It has been real, and will be again.

Thanks for the reply. I am SO glad to hear that Reid doesn’t need just 50 votes to go forward from here, but the actual 60.

I asked how long you had lived there because your first-hand insight could make a difference. It's very easy for a Limbaugh or Hannity type to cite statistics or stories from countries that have already implemented a state-run form of health care; it's quite different coming from one who has been through such madness. We need to hear more voices like yours.

Cheers and thanks, my friend.
