Religious Leaders Call for Civil Disobedience if Laws Donít Respect Faith
NewsMax ^ | Nov 21, 2009

Posted on 11/22/2009 3:08:18 PM PST by Jim Robinson

A formidable coalition of 150 Catholic, Orthodox and evangelical leaders are calling on Christians in a new manifesto to reject secular authority – and even engage in civil disobedience – if laws force them to accept abortion, same-sex marriage and other ideas that betray their religious beliefs.

On Friday, these leaders released a 4,700-word document – called the "The Manhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience."

The document was signed by leaders ranging from evangelical leader Chuck Colson to two of the leading Catholic prelates in the U.S., Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington, D.C. and Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York, and calls on Christians to engage in civil disobedience to defend their doctrines.

The document also blasts the Obama administration, saying that social ills have grown since the election of President Obama, an abortion rights advocate, along with an erosion of what it calls "marriage culture" with the rise of divorce, greater acceptance of infidelity and the uncoupling of marriage from childbearing.

Colson says the project is aimed at instilling social conservative beliefs in a new generation of believers.

"We argue that there is a hierarchy of issues," he told The New York Times. "A lot of younger evangelicals say they're all alike. We're hoping to educate them that these are the three most important issues" – abortion marriage and religious liberty.

"We are Orthodox, Catholic, and evangelical Christians who have united at this hour to reaffirm fundamental truths about justice and the common good, and to call upon our fellow citizens, believers and non-believers alike, to join us in defending them," says the declaration, which was drafted by Colson, an evangelical, and Princeton University professor Robert P. George, a Roman Catholic.

The declaration lists the "fundamental truths" as the "sanctity of human life, the dignity of marriage...

Christians, when they have lived up to the highest ideals of their faith, have defended the weak and vulnerable and worked tirelessly to protect and strengthen vital institutions of civil society, beginning with the family.

We are Orthodox, Catholic, and evangelical Christians who have united at this hour to reaffirm fundamental truths about justice and the common good, and to call upon our fellow citizens, believers and non-believers alike, to join us in defending them. These truths are:

the sanctity of human life
the dignity of marriage as the conjugal union of husband and wife
the rights of conscience and religious liberty.
Inasmuch as these truths are foundational to human dignity and the well-being of society, they are inviolable and non-negotiable. Because they are increasingly under assault from powerful forces in our culture, we are compelled today to speak out forcefully in their defense, and to commit ourselves to honoring them fully no matter what pressures are brought upon us and our institutions to abandon or compromise them. We make this commitment not as partisans of any political group but as followers of Jesus Christ, the crucified and risen Lord, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

EXCELLENT ARTICLE, JIM. THANKS TONS.

Christ is not coming back to a wimpy, ineffectual, scardy-cat, hobbled, crownging-fear-mangled, lifeless, church.

HE IS COMING BACK FOR THE CHURCH TRIUMPHANT. AND FATHER GOD, SON, SPIRIT WILL BE TRANSFORMING THE CHURCH EVER MORE INTO THE CHURCH TRIUMPHANT AS BELIEVERS SEEK GOD AND GOD ALONE.

The Romans were familiar with the import of brutal force.

The new globalist tyrants will fear prayer and THE CHURCH MILITANT ADVANCING IN CHRIST’S BLOOD, IN CHRIST’S SPIRIT, IN CHRIST’S POWER, IN THE MANIFEST PRESENCE OF GOD.

Christ said to render unto Ceaser what was Ceaser’s and unto God what was God’s.

If you think Christ advocated worshipful total kowtowing submission to a satanic global government/state, you are sadly mistaken.

Peter asked the RELIGIOUS rulers . . .

should Christians obey God or man.

Satanic government will be increasingly offering great and stark choice between eternal death and eternal life.

Well put.

The evil demonized tyrants will learn . . .

The prayers of those imprisoned will be more powerful to the tyrants’ serious hurt.

The angelic forces attending those martyred will be most empowerd to take vengeance.

God’s supernatural Presence and minifestations will be far more dramatic than during the Exodus and more dramatic than most events of the Gospel times 2000 years ago.

Whatever fires or fire power they bring to the festivities, God’s fires will be bigger and more devastating to the enemy and empowering to His Kids.

WE SHALL OVERCOME. WE SHALL DO GREAT EXPLOITS FOR GOD’S KINGDOM.

LOVE WILL BE ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL OF GOD’S EMPOWERMENTS. FIERCE AND YET GENTLE LOVE MOSTLY UNSEEN HERETOFORE WILL BECOME MORE THE NORM FOR HIS CHURCH TRIUMPHANT.

SOMETIMES, LOVE MAY MEAN TAKING SOMEONE OUT BEFORE THEY RACK UP MORE PUNISHMENT FOR THEMSELVES.

SOMETIMES Love may mean choosing sacrificial martyrdom to save others.

Regardless, CHRIST’S CHURCH TRIUMPHANT WILL NOT LOSE OUT IN THIS ERA OF THE FINAL BATTLES.

The impressive thing is that this is happening entirely without the media. I have not read one single thing in the MSM about this. They're hoping they can pretend it never happened and we'll never find out about it, but they're wrong.

“The Buggery Blitzkrieg that started in 2003 came fast and furious. Not unlike the French of World War II, traditionalists were quickly overrun and astonished at the lightening-fast strike that came from the homosexual lobby. From Lawrence v. Texas to Gavin Newsom’s weddings by the bay, traditionalists were overwhelmed by the war that was unleashed on them.”

Joe Murray, writing for the American Family Association

The solution:

“...to defend American traditions and the values of faith, family, and country, from any and all directions. And, together, we will chase the purveyors of sex and violence back beneath the rocks whence they came.”

Pat Buchanan, 1996

Um, the Barmen Declaration was part of the slightly off-track task of trying to preserve the autonomy of the major confessing churches as against direct Nazi control of faith and practice. Those were good goals, but they were not, as the Manhattan Declaration is, a virtual declaration of war, a clear proclamation of outright defiance on specific and critical issues of conscience. Barmen didn’t even address the single most egregious offense of the Nazi’s, their murderous anti-Semitism, largely because so many of the German churches had already quietly absorbed the same repugnant mentality.

By contrast, the Manhattan Declaration, due its intensely focused energy, has the potential to generate a remarkably dynamic resistance effort that will be a genuine thorn in the side of the would-be tyrant. Unlike the people of the prewar Weimar Republic, we have the benefit of hindsight. We have, I believe, learned from their mistakes, and from our own. That was then. This is now. Note the difference, and keep moving that flag forward into the conflict.

for years now they have been attacked from the left and homosexuals.
No more now, the time has come to kick those out who are elected and use the religion to further their own agenda while in office.

when will someone ask why this president has not found a church yet.
If he can attend a place which he calls a church for 20 years which is a long time then why not find one now.
This crap of he likes ot pray in private is crap and won’t wsh anymore.

Reference to Roman authority is unnecessary, as 1) we are not under Roman authority, and 2) the principle is amply demonstrated in other contexts so as to make the point clear. For example:

Exodus 1:16-17 And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live. But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.

Or, as when Nebuchadnezzar ordered homage to his statue, the believer’s response was, and had to be, defiance:

Dan 3:16-18 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

More examples available upon request ...

If you wish to counsel and/or personally

support a satanic government in any way or respect . . .

and if you think THAT would be Godly . . .

I can’t imagine that there’s anything useful I can say to you.

I personally believe that each person is responsible to ask God where HE would have them draw the line between obeying God vs man and when man has demanded to much against God’s priorities.

The Living Word within us . . . HIS HOLY SPIRIT is to be our moment by moment guide in concert with Scripture.

I can’t imagine that kowtowing to the AntiChrist will be applauded by God in the slightest.

It is a standard principle of reconciling the Old Testament with the New Testament to observe explicit reinstatement of OT principles in the NT. Murder, for example, is prohibited in both. Is there a repetition of the “conscientious defiance” principle in the NT? Yes:

Act 5:28-29 Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us. Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

Lest you argue the apostles were merely rejecting faulty religious authority but not civil authority, I would remind you that 1) in Israel at that time the Sanhedrin et al were the undifferentiated combination of religious and civil authority, acting as willing local agents of the Roman Empire (when it suited them, of course), and 2) Peter’s words enunciate a general principle of breathtaking scope: We obey God rather than Man. No differentiation on particular governments or OT/NT particulars, but stated as broadly as possible, so no reasonable reader of the future could possibly miss the point.

Next question?
