Where’s the data? 27 November 2009

Much of the discussion in recent days has been motivated by the idea that climate science is somehow unfairly restricting access to raw data upon which scientific conclusions are based. This is a powerful meme and one that has clear resonance far beyond the people who are actually interested in analysing data themselves. However, many of the people raising this issue are not aware of what and how much data is actually available.

Therefore, we have set up a page of data links to sources of temperature and other climate data, codes to process it, model outputs, model codes, reconstructions, paleo-records, the codes involved in reconstructions etc. We have made a start on this on a new Data Sources page, but if anyone has other links that we’ve missed, note them in the comments and we’ll update accordingly.

The climate science community fully understands how important it is that data sources are made as open and transparent as possible, for research purposes as well as for other interested parties, and is actively working to increase accessibility and usability of the data. We encourage people to investigate the various graphical portals to get a feel for the data and what can be done with it. The providers of these online resources are very interested in getting feedback on any of these sites and so don’t hesitate to contact them if you want to see improvements.

Agreed... and I'm not going to trust anything until Steve McIntyre has reviewed it and says that it passes the smell test and should be trusted......

Bet they didn't say that last week. We can only wonder what they will say when some of the governments who gave them grants under false premises haul their little fannies to court and strip them down to the bare meat!

Their work is an UN mandate, how do we know they did not purchase brand new computers and install only the particular data they want released?

What gets obfuscated is the fact that researchers who wanted access to the data in question had to go through the FOIA process to freaking begin with! It’s as obvious as a blister that they weren’t able to simply request the data through normal channels and have that request fulfilled. FOIA is a means by which government agancies are FORCED to cough up information and is probably the last option short of gunpoint. FOIA in this spectacle means STONEWALL.

See post #11, that is where the fraud begins. They dumped all of the raw data after they did “value added manipulation”. No real scientist destroys their raw data, ever, never.

Good post. The data has been destroyed. We can’t trust these fools. The only real data we have is the satellites...and even that is suspect because John Christy adjusted it too...and I think he’s one of the good guys.

It no longer matters if they can fool non-scientists. Real scientists are embarrassed about this and these people will now undergo much more scrutiny. They will also be less likely to be able to browbeat people with other views into shutting up and hunkering down.

They can play pop-science games with the public all they want now.....the real scientific community is going to be on their butts.

A lot of the links only go to graphics and you still can’t download raw data.

For example, the satellite temperature record, you can only see two years at a time and can’t do any analysis on the data because you need at least 20 years of data to establish any trends.
