Well, if my Township-preferred provider of services would not charge me about $15/mo to recycle, I would be inclined to stop throwing away the small amount of recyclables in the trash (trash is about $7/mo).

Is all about economics and common sense, neither of which the gooberment understands.

Yup. The moment recycling becomes economically viable, it doesn't need a government mandate.

If it is cheaper to actually recycle sorted trash than to dump it in the nearest available landfill, one just needs to give a discount to folks who sort for recycling. Out here in Kansas that's only true for the sort of recyclables that you can get paid for, so the market sorts it out. Maybe in SF, LA, or NYC, even subsidizing folks to use the trash as feedstock might be cheaper than putting it in a landfill. If so, by all means provide trash sorters a discount and issue them extra bins.

Here in Howard county MD the entire recycle process is free and voluntary, but we have near the highest taxes in the nation. 20K state income and property per person is typical. Not counting other fees like water,

I’d recycle too if our area didn’t insist on charging for stickers you have to put on your recyclables! If the government wants you to act in a certain way...don’t make me pay to do it FGS!
