Term Limits for Congress?
CoalitionGuy

Posted on 12/12/2009 7:59:28 AM PST by CoalitionGuy

Americans have been so apathetic, afraid, or down right lazy in their political involvement. It's clear that Congress has been slowly destroying many wonderful things about America, yet few speak out, or take action to rid Congress of tyrants.

It's time to organize voters to PURGE CONGRESS and establish term limits for Congress.

Politics was never meant to be a career. Our founding fathers were farmers, ranchers, store owners, etc... Serving in Congress was an honor and duty for patriots. By establishing term limits for Congress, we would be better assuring that only people with a genuine interest in the will of the people would run for office.

There are so many "Complainer.com" sites here on the web, but how many are doing anything to make the needed changes?

Is there any mechanism available for Patriots to organize and act on the issue of purging Congress? I am organizing such an organization, but it seems that Americans don't care, and won't get involved with the loss of their liberties.

I’m sure there are some downsides to this proposal but it appears to be a reasonable if not necessary thing to do.

Congress should be limited to two terms, one in office and one in prison.

Extend it to immediate family members who have served a term as well. No more political dynasties.

How are you going to establish term limits? Those you are trying to limit would have to pass it. Were they in favor of that they could limit themselves. In fact, it seems that the best of them do, all conservative Republicans.

If you are going to spend the energy I would favor limiting their time in session to three months a year. Get them back home close to the people they represent and away from the power brokers and lobbyists.

Since our schools are failing miserably when it comes to teaching government and the importance of our system weighed against other systems, it’s apparent that too many people now have no concept of how our representative government works nor do they care. Ask your friends, including those with advanced degrees who there federal reps are and too many will fail. For years the left has dumbed down and politically corrected their lemmings to a frightening degree.

I’m totally in favor of term limits: Two 6 years for the Senate and six 2 years in the House.

If they can’t get something done right in 12 years they don’t belong there.

Heck! Presidents only get a max of 8 years.

As someone pointed out tho....it takes a constitutional referendum and (I think) 2/3s of the states have to approve.

I can’t see that happening here in the liberal-socialist land of the north where Leahy and Sanders have more than 50 years at the public trough!

You'd have to amend the Constitution.

I find it amazing SO MANY people do not understand "term limits" is not going to happen.

SCOTUS already ruled it unconstitutional and the process for term limits is called an "election"

A great idea. Should have happened 100 years ago.

Of course, we ought to return election of Senators to the respective State Legislatures, too, IMO.

I agree 100%. Term limits would prevent most of the corruption in both houses. I also believe that there should be a upper age limit to the Supreme Court. I believe 3/4 of the States would have to start the process to amend the Constitution. This will never happen since you can guarantee that the RAT controlled State and RINO's like power they currently have.

One thing for sure, most of the Senators and Representatives are pure sick social nitwits. Check the likes of Waters, Barneeeee, Pelosi, Waxman, etc., etc., etc.

If we could convince most Americans that the only way to protect us from the special interests using government in a way detrimental to the American People is a return to the idea of a limited government with only the few powers authorized in the Constitution; then we will elect good politicians. The Progressives/Socialists have convinced people that as long as we elect our leaders we have nothing to fear from government and the result has been a complete circumvention of Constitutional limitations.

We have to tie them closer to the folks they were elected to represent. Using a constitutional convention as a vehicle, change the constitution to get their noses out of the federal trough. Congress critters, in both houses, should be paid only by the voters in the state/district they represent. If they do a good job, vote to pay them more. If they perform like the current members do, cut their pay to nil or fire them.
The golden rule: he who has the gold makes the rules.

And, if you amend the Constitution you will have changed what SCOTUS must test against.

An Amendment to create term limits then would be the foundational law of the land. How can SCOTUS find unconstitutional what the people define as constitutional? Seems to me that would be a fuse on a powder keg.

It’s time to take back the country.

Many of us care very much. A couple of thoughts: Credible leadership in this effort is critical. Firing congress and starting over with citizen representatives and senators is fine, but this shifts even more power to the unelected, anonymous congressional staffers who work behind the scenes.

If we leave them in place, they will continue to execute their own agendas and the congress will be under their control.

SOLUTION? Two things; ropes & trees.

California has has term limits, and has had them since the 1990s. I can’t think of a more powerful argument against term limits than that fact.

You’re correct that the SCOTUS did rule against Congressional term limits in the 90s by a vote of FIVE to FOUR!

I’m not giving up on the possibility.

At the time 23 states voted 2-1 to change term limits

Maybe the next few years will see a makeup change in the Court and another attempt at sanity.

And, if you amend the Constitution you will have changed what SCOTUS must test against.

Amending the Constitution to place term limits as law of the land would take at least 12 years and even if 2/3 of the states actually pass legislation to make Congress vote on it, do you really think Congress will pass an amendment forcing themselves out of a job?

A invigorated and educated people are the answer to reign these DC clowns in by making an educated vote.

I'm afraid we are too late to turn the country around.

CWII will probably be the final answer to cleanse this land of the vermin currently running it

By a 5/4 vote in Thornton v. US Term Limits, the US Supreme Court declared term limits for Congress unconstitutional. (Justice Thomas wrote the dissent).

No SCOTUS ruled that the individual states can't impose term limits. (A “Dred Scott” quality ruling as far as I am concerned!) However a Constitutional Amendment would only be stopped by the ability to get it passed.

Ditto. It appears we have several groups and websites pushing for term limits however everyone is going in different directions. We need to unify into one effort with one term limit platform to be successful. My team is starting an effort that will make March 1, 2010 Congressional Reform Day where we’ll initiate requests with our individual state legislators to assist with proposing a term limit amendment to the Constitution (per the process defined in the US Constitution). If you are interested in joining this effort, please email me at term-limit@hotmail.com. This is a temp email until we finalize our website.

Thanks.

TJ
