New Zealand’s immigration growth reached the highest level in more than five years in the year to October, a further indication that consumer spending and increased demand for housing may speed the economy.
In the year ending October 31, New Zealand immigration numbers saw an increase of 18,560 permanent migrant arrivals, up from 17,043 in the 12 months through September and the most since the period ended August 2004.
The increase in immigration and the numbers of permanent migrants coming to work in New Zealand has coincided with a rise in retail spending and consumer confidence reaching a 22-month high.
Permanent migrants who wish to emigrate and work in New Zealand must have a New Zealand visa to do so.
Reserve Bank Governor Alan Bollard last month said rising house prices and a building increase in household spending were buoying the economy, which grew in the three months ended June 30.
The increase in net New Zealand immigration, reported by Statistics New Zealand, has been boosted by the fact that fewer New Zealanders heading overseas and permanent departures fell 18 per cent in the year ended October 31.
Statistics New Zealand says that amounts to 15,600 fewer citizens leaving permanently in the year ended October 31 compared with the year earlier.

My Aunt has a farm there. She spends half the year here and half the yer there. It won’t be long before she spends the rest of her life there.

Years ago New Zealand had a strongly controlled immigration policy, don’t know if it is still in effect. You had to have a craft or profession that would be beneficial to the overall well being of the country and you only had a few years (I believe it was five years) to prove it or you were gone. Race, religion didn’t play into the equation.
Their wine industry is booming, as well it should. They put out the best Sauvignon Blancs on the planet, down there in Marlborogh.

Yep, at one time it was the whites who were the “immigrants” in NZ.
,,, Auckland is where you land and do customs and immigration in the North Island - Christchurch in the South Island. There’s a lot more choice. Don’t get caught up in Auckland too long.
,,, there’s a new company called Ohau Gravels which just took a gold medal for their first pick of pinot gris. I’ve yet to try it. Sauvignon blancs are superb from Marlborough region though, as you say.
Every time (thousands of times daily) a 3rd-worlder strolls across the border or drops an anchor baby, it makes me poorer and the nation weaker.
Not only are these demographic changes ruining the western nations, they virtually eliminate any chance of positive reform in third-world countries the new "Americans" come from - those places don't produce many "best and brightest" as it is, and allowing all of them to move to the west takes away any pressure and ability to reform those crap-holes.
I was born into a strong, prosperous and united nation of 200 million predominately european-descended persons with the same culture, religion and outlook. If you think that the addition of 125 million-plus third-worlders over the last 40 years has improved this country in any way, you're either a resident of one of the few remaining predominately "white" areas of the US, or you are a fool.
You obviously support the conversion of the US into a balkanized, poor and weak 3rd-world country, and you are going to get your way - let me know how happy you are when the changes catch up to you... you know, when one of those 50 mexicans living in the house next door to you "takes a liking" to your 6-year old daughter, or when one of those nice, hard-working somalis around the corner goes "sudden jihad" at the mall your wife is shopping in.
