As a panelist on Fox News Sunday, Liz Cheney, a potential bright future star of the conservative movement, declared that the job Senate republicans have been doing to derail ObamaCare was "masterful." I agree.
I realize there are some conservatives out there who are disappointed that our GOP Senators aren't initiating legislative Armageddon to stop this latest Obamination. They don't want the Senate GOP to be the "party of no" they want the GOP to be the party of HELL NO! I have a great deal of sympathy with that point of view and did have the chance to express myself on the issue of stronger Senate GOP leadership directly to Senator McCain here a few years back.
But leading GOP senators has been compared to herding cats. If they get too skittish, they scatter. And lately, it has been remarkable how united they have been. Even Olympia Snowe appears to have come back from the dark side despite intense personal lobbying by President Obama at the White House.
And while GOP senators are more united than ever before, a huge swing in independent support has abandoned Obama and taken up opposition to ObamaCare. These are the same voters who constantly complain about partisan bickering and whose support GOP Senators fear might weaken if GOP Senators were to follow more hardball tactics. Such tactics risk fracturing our unity in the Senate and the majority support we enjoy on this issue among the public.

I love Liz but this spawn-of-hell bill ain’t dead yet.
AFTER it’s dead we can discuss how masterful the pubbies have been.
it ain’t derailed YET!!
a followup might be to use this together with hillarycare as evidence that the government cannot possibly deal with health care, to throw the whole issue off the table for future campaings.
They need to keep working on Jim Webb (D-VA). We can peel ‘em off too.
Its not tied up because of any masterful action by the GOP. The Dems have it all tied up by themselves. I dont think the GOP has done anything masterful in quite a while!
I hope they can keep delaying this POS bill until the whole thing fails.
Basically I agree with you but I hate telling Liz she's dead wrong. Give her a little wiggle room... ;0)
REMEMBER: None of these so called GOP types would have moved ONE inch out of their way for us if the Conservatives out here in fly-over country didn’t explode into the kind and extent of very firm, public and organized outrage that we did ... and continue to demonstrate!!!
It ain’t over
Bingo! What we are seeing is single party gridlock. With all due respect to Ms. Cheney, the 'Pubbies have a number of parliamentary tricks they could use, but aren't. This thing is a long, long way from being dead. Rumor has it if the Senate bill passes Pelousy will bring the Senate bill to the House floor for a vote. I have no doubt that the Senate bill would pass in the House and this would eliminate any need for any reconciliation. It's way yonder too soon to be patting anyone on the back right now. The Senate is the Alamo, it is the last stand....
‘Republicans actually act like Republicans’ when in the minority ping!
This liberal whining is music, It’s been a while.
No, it’s not dead yet, but I agree with Liz’ assessment and think we should take heart from this.
But keep fighting.
In this case they may have, but only by accident. I read an analysis this morning that suggests that the Dems would have loved nothing more than to change the subject from the actual bill to the "obstructionist do nothing Republicans." By abstaining from procedural maneuvers, The GOP has forced the spotlight to remain on this horrible bill itself.
I do believe however, that this has not been part of a grand strategy. It has been a reflection of the confused impotence of The GOP establishment.
