What Recession? Michelle Obama Wears $635 Shoes on $4000 Per Night Hawaii Vacation

Barack Obama enjoys living like a king, so why shouldn't Michelle Obama live like a queen?

The First Lady was photographed last night in Hawaii wearing $635 per pair designer shoes by Maison Martin Margiela.

The shoe style is called "Leather open toe flat pumps." It features a "thin nude leather strap across the top of the toe."

A woman lucky enough to have a job in this economy and working for the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour would have to work 88 hours (without taxes taken out) to make enough to pay for Michelle Obama's shoes. If she can get them on sale, they would only set her back $445 for 62 hours work.

The Obamas are staying at an $8.9 million estate for an estimated $4000 per night. To cover the Obama's ten night stay, the minimum wage worker would have to work two-and-a-half years (before taxes) to come up with the $40,000 Obama is reportedly laying out.

Obama has lectured Americans about how they can not expect to live their lives as indulgently as they have in the past. He has lectured businesses about their travel and pay. Yet Obama and his wife live like kings and queens.

The news media has yet to call him out on his extravagance when there is 10% unemployment with no sign of the employment picture improving this coming year.

Amazing how she has the gall to wear these expensive shoes in face of US recession, they have the gall to stay in an $8.9 million mansion for 2 WEEKS (very few Americans are taking lavish vacations over Xmas—especially for 2 weeks.) Can I just add that the shoes are hideous!!!!!!!!!!

Despicable. Those shoes are truly UGLY, by the way... I wouldn’t pay 99 cents for ‘em.

I believe the technical term is "ugly ass shoes," as in the following quotation:

"Hell, no, I don't own any of those ugly ass shoes."

...and whatever happened to Michelle Belle in simple, understated JCrew? ..how quickly she changed her taste in fashion.

"When Michelle Obama visited 10 Downing Street in London on Wednesday morning, she wore a sparkly cream cardigan and mint green pencil skirt by J. Crew."

"No $150,000 wardrobe malfunctions for Michelle Obama", the fashion hyenas reported.

..Al Sharpton has connections to "designers". ;)

They’re fugly. But of course, I wouldn’t pay $635 for an entire outfit, so what do I know?

This is absolutely no different from any communist who takes over by getting power from telling the people how the rich have screwed them and then the new “king” proceeds to do the same but worse. All these people live like royalty while telling the people how ruined they are by the rich and of course say we have to keep them in power to rectify this. A very old scam.

Besides which, the shoes don’t look so great to me and I am someone who knows about these things.

Hip Hop superstar Jay-Z cites his affinity for Margiela’s work on his 2009 hit single “Run This Town.”

Martin Margiela (born April 9, 1957 in Genk, Belgium) is a Belgian fashion designer.

Martin Margiela has maintained an extremely low profile. He has never had his picture taken and remains backstage after his shows. All media contact is dealt with via fax. Maison Martin Margiela’s ultradiscreet trademark consists of a piece of cloth with the numbers 0-23

Margiela’s brand was acquired by the Diesel brand in 2002 and industry insiders quoted in the article suggested that Martin Margiela may desire to leave due to creative differences, or simply, “... a desire to enjoy his life outside the insistent glare of the fashion world.”

Martin Margiela to Leave Fashion House He Founded

PARIS — The avant-garde Belgian designer Martin Margiela has quietly left the fashion house he built — and he will not be replaced at the company, which has been majority owned by the Italian group Diesel since 2002.

Insiders had known for months that Mr. Margiela had left the company in all but name. The designer’s particular vision, which had focused on the authenticity of the vintage artisan fused with modern photo prints depicting wrinkles or handwork, was missing from recent shows.

It's not like she has a real husband, ya know?

He's so self-centered that it's likely he's incapable of showing her any measurable degree of attention.

She has her shoes and "fashion" and he has his arrogance and teleprompter.

It's like there's some plot to make Michelle look ugly. I don't like people who rag on politician's looks (although I admit I've made my share of remarks about Waxman and Grayson) as a habit of conversation, but why does she dress so badly? Even Oprah manages better than this!

If I were to set about to create a wardrobe that accented one's flaws and minimized one's advantages, it would be Michelle's Closet.

if she paid $635 for that pair of shoes...she was taken big time. I wouldn’t wear them anyway as there is no style to them but...if I did wear them I might give $9.95 but no more. $635????? Sinful.

Poor thing. Stupid looking shoes.

There are plenty of attractive, light-weight, slipper-like shoes available, if that's what she wants, and if all else fails, there are these

and these

though both may be below her... er weight grade.

I admit what shoes she wears, in the grandee scheme of things, is not so important to me when we have terrorists lurking behind every airplane wing. But, it makes for some funny lines, laugh relief, esoecially when you are The First Lady who has promoted JCrew in Pollyanna theatrics on talk shows etc, but we know Choo is Really Where The Heart Lies.

You don't wear shoes of that category with JCrew.

Desiree Rogers, her "Commes des Garcons-wearing" Social Secretary was often seen at fashion shows (weekdays on the dime) sitting between editors of big fashion mags..I suspect it was all for Michelle as well, and not just about Rogers own "preening and self-indulgent" ways.

I do admit they need not dress in rags and loafers..but at least seek help from stylists like Rachel Zoe.

It features a "thin nude leather strap across the top of the toe."

Honestly, I'm genuinely surprised that she would even consider these shoes, given that the designer refers to the leather strap as being "nude." I would have thought Michelle would find offense in the description of the color of the strap as being "nude" in color. Didn't Crayola have to change the name of one of their crayons from "nude" to "peach-or-something" because Blacks said that the word nude had different meanings depending upon race?

It looks to me like these shoes are meant to be word by someone with much lighter skin than Michelle, and the strap is meant to be nearly invisible.

I just find it curious, that's all. Of course, I have little to no fashion sense myself ... loving jeans and sweatshirts as I do!

However, under the current circumstances with our recession, they should take a page out of the Carter workbook..set the WH temp at 60, and not be so showy....

I’ve worn some toe shoes (the pink ones) in my time, which have heavily plaster-reinforced toes. I have always been curious about the “ghilies” of your second photo, used in Celtic dancing. How do they work?

Former dancer? En pointe ballet steps require specially reinforced shoes (as you indicate). The second shoes are ghillies, worn by men and women in Scottish Country Dancing, and Highland Dancing. These are soft shoes, with no reinforced toe. It would take an amazing dancer to dance en point in these. In SCD women more often wear a ballet type shoe without the reinforcement needed for en pointe. Very good dancers sometimes bring their feet into the position shown in my post, but not while the feet are bearing their weight.

Both types of dance are done throughout the English speaking world and beyond. Both types of dance are fairly standardized, with the standards of Highland Dancing being generally higher, since it is competitive, solo dancing, while SCD is primarily social and not competitive. SCD is usually a great deal of fun and not so much hard work. Here is a sample of very glitzy SCD with a moderately high standard of dance done at some BBC event. Best viewed with high speed internet, though with time and patience you can use dialup, then replay. IIRC it's a Glasgow dance team, and should have very good dancers, but I would say the men seem a bit "wet" and do not have the "presence" of strong male dancers.

You don't have to be Scottish or have a partner to do SCD. Check out Scottish Country Dancing on YouTube and Freepmail me if you'd like to know more.
