We had best get our hip boots on, the bullcrap is getting deeper by the minute.

They screwed up before they didn’t screw up but the bomb caught on fire before the passengers put out the fire.

This reminds me of the suicide note found in Vince Foster’s briefcase days after the FBI searched the empty briefcase.

IIRC, the passenger list was sent to U.S. intel and they approved the take-off. Must have figured it out mid-air. Rut-roh! BO has a major “screw up” to answer for, again.

Mid-flight - indeed that’s what the linked article states, but decide to wait til flight lands for questioning? - NO apparent notice to pilot ?

Hard to see how this is a CYA? - seems more like “too slow of a reaction” to the obivious

***When did Secure Flight's requirements go into effect?
Secure Flight required that all airlines request and collect Secure Flight Passenger Data (SFPD) as of October 31, 2009. Secure Flight is being phased in with each airline. Implementation with all domestic airlines is scheduled to be completed by early 2010 and international carriers by the end of 2010.

What happens if my airline did not ask for any of the newly required information?
Secure Flight is being phased-in and each airline will incorporate the necessary changes into its system over the coming months. Passengers should not be concerned if particular airlines don't ask them to provide the additional information right away; it should not impact their travel.

What is the objective of Secure Flight?
The goals of the program are to:

Identify known and suspected terrorists
Prevent individuals on the No Fly List from boarding an aircraft
Subject individuals on the Selectee List to enhanced screening to determine if they are permitted to board an aircraft
Facilitate passenger air travel
Protect individuals’ privacy***

U.S. border enforcement officials came close to stopping the attempted bombing...

Just think how that would have comforted the hundreds of families that "came close" to losing their loved ones if he had succeeded?

In the air, eh? Why do I get the feeling that we’re about to find out that they knew BEFORE it lifted off, but someone either stepped out to lunch first, or one of those great bureaucratic walls was in place again, preventing notification.

U.S. border enforcement officials came close to stopping the attempted bombing of a Northwest Airlines jet while the suspect was en route to Detroit on Christmas Day, new data show.

Border enforcement officials are now equipped with atomic propulsion tanks that can be strapped to their backs that allow them to shoot up to 30,000 feet at incredible speeds to intercept airlines in flight and board the plane to thwart attempts by a passenger to set off a bomb. Isn't it obvious?

“The people in Detroit were prepared to look at him in secondary inspection,” said a senior law enforcement official who requested anonymity because the investigation is ongoing told the Times. “The decision had been made. The ..... database had picked up the State Department concern about this guy, that this guy may have been involved with extremist elements in Yemen....... They could have made a decision on whether to stop him from getting on the plane.”

Isn’t that what the bomber tried to do too, remove himself from the plane mid-flight?
