Gates Backs Repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' (Idiot ALERT)

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday that he supports President Obama's decision to seek the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy prohibiting gays from serving openly in the military and has appointed a "high-level working group" to figure out how to do it.

Gates, in testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee, announced that Gen. Carter Ham, who leads U.S. Army forces in Europe, and Pentagon General Counsel Jeh Johnson will lead the review. The defense chief called for an "implementation plan" by the end of the year.

"I fully support the president's decision," Gates said. "The question before us is not whether the military prepares to make this change, but how we ... best prepare for it. We have received our orders from the commander in chief and we are moving out accordingly."

Doesn't this change things back to pre-1993? Congress has to change the law to allow gays to openly serve. Not sure they could push that thru.

It's all about helping Obama with his base (who are not happy about the mini-surge in Afghanistan or the failure to close Gitmo). Obama doesn't care about the US military--it's all politics with him, like everything else.

I heard one report that 10% of the military would not re-enlist if this goes through.

“”I fully support the president’s decision,” Gates said. “The question before us is not whether the military prepares to make this change, but how we ... best prepare for it. We have received our orders from the commander in chief and we are moving out accordingly.”

TRANSLATION: “I don’t have the spine to tell the commander-in-chief that he can’t tell his a$$ from a hole in the wall. I also want to keep my cushy job. What’s more, since I don’t have to deal with the consequences of his decision, I really don’t care.”

My personal opinion is that this will be beginning of a long, slippery downward slope for our Armed Forces. Just like everything else, these a-holes just want to ram things down our throats for no other reason than to please a tiny minority.

Disagree, while the USMJ is written by congress, Executive Orders have and historically have been used to change policy and require zero congressional involvement. The most famous at least publicly is the end of segregation in the military.

If Fauxbama was serious about this whole issue, he could issue executive order and be done with it. He won’t of course because he’s not interested in actually doing anything just telling others what to do while remaining plausible deniability for himself.

"The most famous at least publicly is the end of segregation in the military."

Truman's order overturned a policy implemented by the military of its own accord; not a law passed by Congress. Truman as CinC was fully in his authority to do so. Obama (or any pres) can not arbitrarily rewrite the UCMJ. He can, in theory anyways, issue orders as to how it is to be (or not to be) enforced. Big difference there.
