Holder: I made decision to charge terror suspect (Christmas Day underwear bomber)
The Washington Post / The Associated Press ^ | February 3, 2010 | Pete Yost

Attorney General Eric Holder said Wednesday he made the decision to charge the Christmas Day terror suspect in civilian court rather than the military system, with no objection from all the other relevant departments of the government.

In a letter to Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, the attorney general wrote that the FBI told its partners in the intelligence community on Christmas Day and again the next day that Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab would be charged criminally.

Holder's letter was the latest volley in a vigorous counterattack by the Obama administration to Republican charges that the arrest and FBI interrogation of the Detroit suspect was a mistake that cost a chance to learn key information.

The letter followed less than 24 hours after senior administration officials disclosed that the suspect had resumed talking to U.S. interrogators last week after breaking off his discussions the day of his arrest.

Abdulmutallab has discussed his contacts in Yemen and provided intelligence in multiple terrorism investigations, officials say.(continued)

Rush had a great point about the “Christmas Day” bomber. Libs are always trying to get rid of Christmas! Why not call him the “Happy holidays bomber”? Seasons Greetings bomber? Winter soltice bomber?

Who talks about alleged cover-ups at FR anymore?
Patrick F. Kennedy, an undersecretary for management at the State Department, said Abdulmutallab's visa wasn't taken away because intelligence officials asked his agency not to deny a visa to the suspected terrorist over concerns that a denial would've foiled a larger investigation into al-Qaida threats against the United States.
(From The Detroit News)

There are also reports from the Haskell family, who were on the plane, of a "Sharp Dressed Man" who helped the Undabomber in Amsterdam. Maybe our guys thought we were furthering an investigation instead of helping an attacker to his target.

The goofy treatment of the suspect could be a maneuver to keep secrets and news of screw-ups from getting out.

Holder: Best friend of criminals and terrorists BUT law abiding US citizens should not own guns...

“In his final days with the Clinton administration, Holder was involved with Clinton’s last-minute pardon of fugitive and Democratic contributor Marc Rich...”

“Holder was also involved in Clinton’s decision to reduce the criminal sentences of 16 members of the Boricua Popular Army, an organization that has been categorized by the FBI as a terrorist organization...”

“In 2004, Holder helped negotiate an agreement with the Justice Department for Chiquita Brands International in a case that involved Chiquita’s payment of “protection money” to the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, a group on the U.S. government’s list of terrorist organizations...”

“While D.C. v. Heller was being heard by the Supreme Court in 2008, Holder joined the Reno-led amicus brief, which urged the Supreme Court to uphold Washington, D.C.’s handgun ban and said the position of the Department of Justice, from Franklin Roosevelt through Clinton, was that the Second Amendment does not protect an individual right to keep and bear arms...”

“In 2008, Holder represented the wife of Robert Wone, victim of a controversial and unsolved 2006 murder...”

“He (Holder) has been critical of Enhanced interrogation techniques and the NSA warrantless surveillance program, accusing the Bush administration of a “disrespect for the rule of law... [that is] not only wrong, it is destructive in our struggle against terrorism...”

“Holder gave a speech on race relations on February 18, 2009, in the midst of Black History Month, in which he called the United States “a nation of cowards” on racial issues...”

“When questioned about weapons regulations during a news conference to announce the arrest of Mexican drug cartel members, Holder stated that the Obama administration would seek to reinstitute the expired Assault Weapons Ban,which he strongly supports.”

“Attorney General Eric Holder said Wednesday he made the decision to charge the Christmas Day terror suspect in civilian court rather than the military system, with no objection from all the other relevant departments of the government.”

And exactly which “other relevant departments” were even informed before he made the decision?

As MLK said:
“I have to scream...
that men will be judged by the content of his caricature, and not by the color of his skin. I have to scream.”

an idiot is an idiot. Holder needs to hang his shingle back in south chicago.

Here is the money line: “The letter followed less than 24 hours after senior administration officials disclosed that the suspect had resumed talking to U.S. interrogators last week after breaking off his discussions the day of his arrest.”

Now has anyone said exactly what the suspect is talking about? On an earlier thread a cogent Freeper speculated that in order to get him “talking” the suspect had probably been offered a plea deal in exchange for pointing out the location of Yemen on a map.

Will there be any democrats left in Congress after this November?

They are being exposed and are exposing themselves that the only way they can hold onto power is to seize it, which would be a losing cause.

The Attorney General and the Secretary of Defense are peers. Neither can order the other to do anything.

Both work for Obama. Obama made the call.
