Millions of Unemployed Face Years Without Jobs
New York Times ^ | February 20, 2010 | PETER S. GOODMAN

BUENA PARK, Calif. — Even as the American economy shows tentative signs of a rebound, the human toll of the recession continues to mount, with millions of Americans remaining out of work, out of savings and nearing the end of their unemployment benefits.

Economists fear that the nascent recovery will leave more people behind than in past recessions, failing to create jobs in sufficient numbers to absorb the record-setting ranks of the long-term unemployed.

Call them the new poor: people long accustomed to the comforts of middle-class life who are now relying on public assistance for the first time in their lives — potentially for years to come.

Yet the social safety net is already showing severe strains. Roughly 2.7 million jobless people will lose their unemployment check before the end of April unless Congress approves the Obama administration’s proposal to extend the payments, according to the Labor Department.

Here in Southern California, Jean Eisen has been without work since she lost her job selling beauty salon equipment more than two years ago. In the several months she has endured with neither a paycheck nor an unemployment check, she has relied on local food banks for her groceries.

She has learned to live without the prescription medications she is supposed to take for high blood pressure and cholesterol. She has become effusively religious — an unexpected turn for this onetime standup comic with X-rated material — finding in Christianity her only form of health insurance.

"Roughly 2.7 million jobless people will lose their unemployment check before the end of April unless Congress approves the Obama administration’s proposal to extend the payments, according to the Labor Department." What's the likelihood of that, given that it's an election year?

Exactly what Obama and the 'Rats want.

This must be what Biden means when he says that Porkulus "worked".

Cloward-pivens / alinski at work...

“Any revolutionary change must be preceded by a passive, affirmative, non-challenging attitude toward change among the mass of our people. They must feel so frustrated, so defeated, so lost, so futureless in the prevailing system that they are willing to let go of the past and change the future. This acceptance is the reformation essential to any revolution.” Alinsky

All by design....progressivism at work...

Not really the ACORN type. More like the young men I am recruiting into my private army designed to protect Conservatives at polling places.

We get 5 million or so troops under arms and everything is changed.

This is the real reason the Congress has to get it's head out of the ground and start dealing with problems.

My 5 million troops will get the medical care they wish when they wish free of charge and without bureaucracy or paperwork.

With the environmental anarchists calling the shots, the US has been moving manufacturing jobs offshore for years. Now the chickens come home to rest. With open borders, all “the jobs that Americans wouldn’t do” are now filled by illegal immigrants.

We still have not learned our lessons, since the environmentalists still object to drilling for oil or natural gas. When will we learn America. Look at the country which we used to be.

Before these people become completely destitute and start constructing Obamavilles, it would probably be a good idea for cities to slap together some low cost rural housing. It could be done with military field tents for things like schools, a mess hall, showers, police, and a clinic. Then inexpensive 1-floor motel like buildings for families.

It would stop a lot of suffering, centralize services, provide a jobs pool for employment, and keep all those people reasonable safe and secure, and able to recover quickly when the opportunity presents itself.

If you are over age 50 and lose your professional job in these times - you may never have a professional job again...

Bottom line - I know how it works... Been there ... only absolute luck and perseverance got me out of it after Five Years...

If you are over age 50 - lost your job - then sober up - this is how bad it is ... take dramatic - even drastic action to change your lifestyle to reduce living expenses ... years will go by with no relief...

And it is worse now than when I went through it...

I have lots of advice - just ask...

Economic recovery is not in the cards. IMHO
But Bozo will keep telling us it is until
we’re too weak to care or fight back.
