Boos as Ron Paul wins CPAC straw poll
Politico ^ | Feb 20, 2010 | JONATHAN MARTIN & JESSICA TAYLOR

Posted on 02/20/2010 6:56:45 PM PST by SmartInsight

Paul's victory renders a straw poll that was already lightly contested among the likely 2012 GOP hopefuls all but irrelevant as the 74-year-old Texan is unlikely to be a serious contender for his party's nomination.

CPAC organizers were plainly embarrassed by the results, which could reduce the perceived impact of a contest that was once thought to offer a window into which White House hopefuls were favored by movement conservatives.

A spokesman for the conference rushed over to reporters following the announcement to make sure they had heard the unmistakable boos when the screen first showed Paul had won the straw poll.

2,935 votes were cast in the straw poll, the most in the history of the 37-year conference, but a fraction of the approximately 10,000 people who attended CPAC

Forty-eight percent of those who participated in the contest indicated that they were students and the divergent reaction to the results reflected the outcome.

I wonder why only 30% of all attendees bother to vote and it seems like that is the norm or worse.

Ron Paul won it fair and square, he spoke at the meeting and got a good reaction.

I’m not a Paul fan and don’t see him as a serious presidential contender but I agree, he won this fairly.

I see his win as more of a repudiation of the same old crap.

Better Paul wins the straw poll than Romney...not that I'll vote for either.

I think that number is in error as it appears they have transposed the nine and three. The CPAC website uses 2395 as the number voting which makes the voting percentage even lower.

Gotta' love it.

The mainstream media will report this as the Republican party being in "disarray".

I don’t know who took the poll, but I got news for you. At the precinct GOP caucus I attended last Saturday Ron Paul came in dead last with only 2 votes in the straw poll take at the door. Way ahead and in first place was Palin with around 25, and coming in second was Mitt, and Huckabee followed by another six or seven names including McCain. Ron Paul was dead last and lower than McCain, thats how bad he did.

I see it as stuffing the hall with Paulbots and making sure they all vote in this thing.

I think Ron Paul is the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz. He wins all the straw votes and his fans use strawmen in their arguments.

Perhaps someday the wizard will give him a brain.

Actually about 2395 out of 10,000 that didn't vote. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I asked this question a dozen times on another thread, and no one that was sober would touch it:

Why if other candidates could be voted for, and were on the agenda, why did the huge majority fail to vote?

Ron Paul specializes in sending in his bots to skew these votes. Probably the others didn’t pay it much attention. Certainly Sarah Palin, didn’t since she wasn’t there.

Reon Paul will never be president. Personally, I lost respect for Romney, Thompson and the rest of the Republicans in the primaries when they suddenly dropped out f the race and supported John McCain.

There was something very fishy about the way that happened. We can thank those Republicans for the farce that was the McCain campaign.

but...but...but... I was ASSURED on the other thread that CPAC was totally owned by Romney, and they were so pro-homosexual and trying to destroy American and puppies and all things good and decent.

And then they vote for Ron Paul. This confuses me. Is Ron Paul a gay mittbot ? That would explain so much really.

It appears the CPAC convention was 48% College students.
It appears that out of 10,000 attendees, approx.2900 voted.
We will wait to hear why so few voted.
Paulbots are the people who support Ron Paul zealously.

Big tent is high maintenance good looks bs. It is not at all needed. Just look at how expensive propaganda is getting to China, building Olympic Stadiums it cannot maintain save at the cost of billions. This socialism is a disaster of expensive and mediocre art vanities. The church crashed down after such vain pursuits in decorum, but theirs employed geniuses, not retards.

Who else was there to vote for?

Huckleberry? Romneybot, who I'm sure bused in supporters again? I like Sarah Palin, but c'mon, she's got a ways to go to be a successful prez candidate.

Gingrich has turned into a blithering idiot besides being a sure loser.

Pawlenty? Thune? Jindal? Maybe, but the vast majority of people know very, very little about them.

I was at CPAC three years ago and a newbie confused about procedure and programs. I read nothing about a straw pole but saw the table once or twice. I was concerned about getting a seat and could not see through the crowd at the table to know what they were doing. I thought I could catch it later but it wasn’t available. I was disappointed I missed the whole thing. It’s done before you hear most of the speakers.

my unofficial inside information is that the GOP big-shots are not big into MITT and are trying Pawlenty as their preferred candidate ... with a big push in IA and NH.

That really isn't news, but it seems to be here. So whenever the STOP-MITT campaign is mentioned ... one must question whether Pawlenty would warrant the same revulsion.

Pawlenty is okay ... mixes conservative with pragmatic / populist.

He's not someone who should be ruled out, but ideally we'd find someone better.

I'd give him a 7 out of 10, Huckabee 5, Romney 4.
