Sen. Bunning blocks unemployment benefits extension

WASHINGTON — Some unemployment benefits could dry up Monday. Newly laid-off workers wouldn't get federal help with health insurance premiums.

Road and transit bills could go unpaid, Medicare payments to doctors would stay high and rural satellite reception could be affected, all thanks to Sen. Jim Bunning's decision to block legislation that would keep alive a host of programs that expire Sunday night.

The Kentucky Republican, according to several sources, told Democratic colleagues "tough s---" Thursday when they tried to get him to change his mind.

The Senate is expected to consider a longer-term extension of the programs Monday, with passage likely next week.

The House of Representatives passed the extension by voice vote, and the Senate was expected to go along. Then along came Bunning, a fiscal conservative, who objected because Congress didn't pay for the $10 billion bill.

A beautiful example of the MSM’s unbiased reporting.

Rep. Bunning demonstrated great courage and sound principle. The state of Kentucky is blessed to have a man of his integrity in office.

Thank goodness Bunning doesn’t get to vote on the emergency war supplemental bills or our military would be without boots and ammo! That particular piece of legislation is never deficit-neutral either....

Looks like some Reps are remembering where they hid the key to the testicle lock box.

Im not so sure on this...

My company recently held a job fair and we got over 400 applicants. Most were unemployed and many even had college degrees, some had graduate degrees.

Its a sad situation out there for a lot of people. It’s part of the reason why there is so much hate for the government right now.

I dont buy into the idea that people on unemployment want to stay unemployed. There are just no jobs out there.

Bunning is a senator and not a representative, which is a good thing. As a representative, and in accordance with his courageously principled stand against deficit spending, Bunning would have had to vote against every emergency war supplemental bill for the troops in Iraq and Af/Pak since 2003. Those war supplementals are debt-only, never deficit-neutral.

“Unemployment” is unemployment INSURANCE, as I understand it, and since we get the premiums taken involuntarily out of our paycheck, I think the paid-for benefits should be paid.

I don’t know exactly if Bunning is holding out against unpaid extensions or first time benefits or what. I’ll have to read up on it more closely.

I think that anyone with enough gumption and drive can usually [emphasis intentional] find rewarding work. There are nearly always opportunities in sales. Any business is eager to hire someone who can bring in money. Moreover, there are also options for self-employment (such as those advertised on Laura Ingraham's program).

That said, the Obama Economy (TM) has certainly made the going rough even for the new generation of Horatio Algers.

...and BTW, I did botch the ``Rep'' vs. ``Sen'' in an earlier post. My apologies for that goof since I do know better and have followed his career since his baseball days.

He's objecting to the most recent in a long series of extensions.

Oh yes...blocking unemployment benefits. How awful! Dont these leeches know they have to pay back a portion of those back? I know acquaintances who are on the same boat. One of them just plain STOPPED looking for work and will just set up his own business. His mentality was “if you cant find a job, create one.”

“He’s objecting to the most recent in a long series of extensions.”

I don’t mean to sound cavalier, but I’d back him on this, then. I am afraid subsidizing unemployment creates more of it. If premiums were paid, but the benefits were also all paid, I don’t think there is a moral argument to just legislating more and more benefits.

“if you cant find a job, create one.”

Here's just one example of someone who could have taken entitlements and looted the taxpayer's till (as Dagny Taggart might phrase it) but through sheer determination and hard work overcame adversity to become a successful salesman:

Bill Porter (Door to Door).

It's McClatchy, the one media outlet that makes even MSNBC seem reasonable! Well...maybe quite not that far... :-)

Bunning isn’t opposed to the unemployment compensation extension, he’s opposed to it being unfunded.

Bunning said: “”If we can’t find $10 billion somewhere for a bill that everybody in this body supports, we will never pay for anything,” he said.

THAT's not how the article goes! Her'es the direct quote:
