Tsunami Warning for Hawaii, First Wave at 11:19 a.m. HST, 10-15 Foot Waves; Advisory for West Coast
Saturday, February 27, 2010 | Kristinn/ NWS

Posted on 02/27/2010 4:37:11 AM PST by kristinn

The National Weather Service Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for Hawaii and a tsunami advisory for the West Coast of the United States.

A NWS spokesman on CNN says it is estimated the tsunami waves will be 10 to 15 feet high when they hit Hawaii. The tsunmi waves could last up to six hours.

Recent buoy reports of wave heights vary from 5 to 16 feet.

Latest statement on Hawaii:

BULLETIN
TSUNAMI MESSAGE NUMBER 7
NWS PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER EWA BEACH HI
148 AM HST SAT FEB 27 2010

TO - CIVIL DEFENSE IN THE STATE OF HAWAII

SUBJECT - TSUNAMI WARNING SUPPLEMENT

A TSUNAMI WARNING CONTINUES IN EFFECT FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII.

SNIP

EVALUATION

A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.

THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS

1119 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010

The NWS has also issued a tsunami warning for most of the Pacific region:

TSUNAMI BULLETIN NUMBER 006
PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER/NOAA/NWS
ISSUED AT 1147Z 27 FEB 2010

Here is a local report on the West Coast tsunami advisory:

A tsunami advisory has been issued for the California coast, including Del Norte County, following a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off the central coast of Chile at 10:34 p.m. PST Friday.

The forecasted arrival time for Crescent City is 1:46 p.m. PST Saturday, however tsunamis can be dangerous for many hours after arrival, and the initial wave is not necessarily the largest, the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center says.

THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO AREAS WITHIN AND BORDERING THE PACIFIC OCEAN AND ADJACENT SEAS...EXCEPT ALASKA...BRITISH COLUMBIA... WASHINGTON...OREGON AND CALIFORNIA.

the cats may be reacting to a larger force on the richter scale than a silly little seismic event. In fact, the Chilliean event is pale in comparison to Wasilla

"If I remember right wasn’t it Hilo that had the worst tsunami impact back then?"

Yes, much of the downtown area was destroyed. When the town was rebuilt, most of it was moved further inland and the coastal low area is now a very nice city park.

Well, tsunammi(s) hit the South Pacific area recently. There were warnings here. A lot of people didn’t die because evacuations seemed to work, but there were some devastating waves in that region.

“However, this one definitely has my attention. “

Me too as I’m supposed to be moving to the Marshall Islands soon. Tsunami’s have been my only reservation about going as the island tops out at only 9’ above sea level.

Asia Braces For Tsunami After Chile Quake
Feb. 27, 2010

TOKYO (AP) - Wide swaths of the south Pacific, Asia and Australia braced for a tsunami after a devastating earthquake hit the coast of Chile on Saturday.

Officials in Japan and Australia warned a tsunami from the earthquake was likely to hit Asian shorelines within 24 hours. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii issued a tsunami caution for areas across the region.

"Sea-level readings confirm that a tsunami has been generated which could cause widespread damage," the center said in a bulletin after the........

Listening to live streaming radio from Pago Pago of American Samoa at this exact moment. Lt. Governor of Samoa has given an emergency message on the radio just now, live. They are broadcasting to the Samoan People to not panic, to quit getting on the road if they are not in an area that does not need to be evacuated, so those close to the beaches and low lying areas can get the hell out quick. This is going to hit a few minutes before 9 a.m. Sun up is around 6:20 a.m. It is now about 2:25 a.m there now so about 6 hours or so for folks to get up to higher levels. It is actually rather disturbing to listen to this radio in English. They are playing soothing Samoan music interspersed with announcements in English and Samoan.

They are telling people to be polite and patient at gas stations. I take it, that while they are not trying to panic people, there is panic in American Samoa as we speak. (8:30 a.m. Eastern Saturday)

Here is the NOAA map showing the projected path of highest waves:

Tsunami waves wrap all the way around islands and land masses. So if a Tsunami comes in from the east, the waves wrap around the island and hit the west coast of the island as well. Regular ocean waves bend around land as well.

The following list gives estimated times of arrival for
locations along the North American Pacific coast from a
tsunami generated at the given source location. The
list is ordered by arrival time starting with the earliest.
Since tsunami speed is directly related to
water depth, tsunami ETAs can be computed independent of
tsunami amplitude. THE LISTING OF A TSUNAMI ARRIVAL TIME
BELOW DOES NOT INDICATE A WAVE IS IMMINENT. The listed arrival
time is the initial wave arrival. Tsunamis can be dangerous
for many hours after arrival, and the initial wave is not
necessarily the largest.
