How can anyone defend this atrocity?

The justification may be religion but that’s like damning all Evangelicals with the case of the Houston lady who murdered her five kids in the name of Christianity.

Or the Pastor’s wife who shot her husband because he wanted her to dress sexy or something.

Nuts are nutty.

There is a big difference between Judeo-Christian culture and all the other religious cultures.

I guess American culture isn't "Judeo Christian" any more ... Since 1973, Americans have sacrificed more than FIFTY MILLION under-age children on the altar of the "death goddess" named "Convenience".

We don’t do ad hominem attacks here on FRee Republic. The book in question was authored by a reputable Indian scholar. The fact that he dissects the Hindu religion and views it as nothing but fiction and the havoc it has caused to low-caste Indians is another matter.

LOL, reputable?

Did you even look at the screen-capture of what that “reputable” author has to say?

Take a look at it, again. Answer questions asked, immediately after having done so.

Don’t evade.

Actually, “mata” means “mother”. Mrityu means death, alternate forms are “martya” and other grammatical forms. The English words like “mortal” and “mortuary” derive from the Sanskrit word for death.

Kali Mata means “Mother Kali”. Kali is often depicted with a necklace of skulls because her job is killing demons, in service of the Supreme God. She herself is a servant of God, but those who worship her - especially crazy people like the man in the story - are condemnd by God Himself and Kali.

“LOL” is a poor substitute for serious analysis. Try refuting the texts he uses to demonstrate the utter nonsense, violence, mythical deities, reincarnations, and caste inhumanity of thr Gita. No small wonder, that a certain state Governor of Indian ancestry with a brilliant intellectual mind gave this a thorough read and consigned it to the ash-heap of fiction.

First of all, Kali worship is considered in the Vedas to be inferior, or “shakti” worship - that means worship of the energy of God, not worship of God Himself, which is called “bhakti”. Anyone who worships the creation instead of God is in that sense a demigod or matter worshiper. The Bhagavad Gita actually condemns worship of demigods, of which Kali is one, as inferior, engaged in by materialistic people, and is described thus:

“Those whose minds are distorted by material desires surrender unto the demigods and follow the particular rules and regulations of worship according to their own natures.” BG 7.20

So anyone who worships Kali is actually disregarding the instructions in the Bhagavad Gita. Second, the man was “worshipping” Kali in a manner NOT prescribed in the Puranas or other shastras that actually detail how to worship the various demigods; he was extremely disobedient in every way. Obviously crazy.

Third, those who worship demigods do so for material benefit - to get wealth, strong health, good husband or wife, power, etc. The benefits (if any, as it is not so easy to do everything) are temporary and shallow. But worship of the Supreme Godhead is the only reccommended path in the Bhagavad Gita, and it is simple and easy. Worship of God Himself gives salvation from the world of birth and death, and love for Him and all His creatures.

“Men of small intelligence worship the demigods, and their fruits are limited and temporary”. BG 7.23

Another very important point to note is that sacrifice of humans is never, ever condoned or taught in any of the vast Vedic scriptures. Ever.

Another point is that demigods are created beings just like humans, but with greater power, they assist in the management of the universe; they are God’s servants. They also die, although their lifespans are very long compared to human beings. They are not God, they are not His equals, and the Vedas describe all this quite clearly. Currently, there are many Hindus who are ignorant about their own scriptures and religion, just as there are many Christians similiarly ignorant. (Think snake handlers, Christains for abortions and “gay” marriage, etc.) The fault in the grisly crime described in this article is not in the scriptures or traditions of Hinduism, but in modern misunderstanding and even more so, personal failure and evil.

There is no Hindu text mandating, ordering, describing, or condoning human sacrifice. This is just not true.

Your beliefs about Hinduism could not be more wrong.

I’ve been planning a “Hindu Caucus” for some time, pulling articles from elsewhere and writing myself. A Caucus means people can’t flame.

I’m going to call it Sat Dharma Caucus since the word “Hindu” isn’t in the Vedas. I really need to do this.

Imagine so many people in the USA say...”It doesn’t matter what faith you believe in as long as you belive”....

This happening should certainly show otherwise as with many pagan belief systenms.... many are still operating according to the pagan standards of old. Including Islam.

Please note my comment above. The slaughter of children and suicide are completely against all tenets of Hindu scripture and tradition.

Hindus find this kind of behavior bizarre, repulsive and criminal. Such horrors do not implicate Hinduism or Hindus as a group, any more than Andrea Yates, who drowned her five children thinking she was saving them from sin, represents Christians. Or homeschoolers. Or Texans.

Yes they have but then that would surely lend one to question if they are Christian indeed, would it not?

I will assume many claim the name of Christianity for various reasons...it’s pretty easy to say you are Christian...with certain Christian circles it’s just popular to belong to certain churches and groups....it’s the in place to be. Other’s choose Christian because to say one is an Atheist or have no certain faith would not be readily acceptable for some.

However, it would be extremely difficult for a Christian who understood their commitment to God to have an abortion.....and should they do that the realization afterwards haunts them even when they have asked and received forgiveness.

Comments on the original site are really interesting....

Besides the usual hindu-moslem bickering, there is a feeling that perhaps he may have been upset about the fate of his hindu daughters in a moslem world and the spin about him doing a religious sacrifice is to make it look bad in the press, rather than him being just a troubled person who did something horrid to his family....

He shoulda hired some jihadis to do this.

Then it wouldn’t even have made the newspapers.

Like all the other decapitations we don’t hear about from Pakistan. Just recently, a group of Pakistani Sikhs for not paying ransom, a bunch of Muslim tribal leaders for opposing the Talibs....

The Brahmin Hindu Prelate who butchered to death three small girls as an offering to a Hindu deity apparently believed that Hindu text compelled this barbarous deed. Of course, this doesn’t translate into whether or not he was reading this correctly.

So what do I know except for the fact that the Gita does have explicit reference to sanctioning violence such as the command to Arjuna to wage war dispassionately and indiscriminately and it’s express reference to casteism as a condition of priesthood. But to be sure, like all narratives context and intepretation may vary depending on use and analyses of source material. Accordingly, reasonable and honest disagreements among scholars may ensue.

I agree with your comments, regarding individual behaviour.

I spoke of the culture, however. Is a culture in which abortion is tolerated (even celebrated) really Christian? Is it informed and animated by Christian principles?

I say that it is not.
