Carney loses bid to gain key post ("Blue Dog" Dem)

Democratic U.S. Rep. Chris Carney’s bid to follow in the footsteps of his two Republican 10th District representative predecessors by sitting on the powerful House Appropriations Committee will have to wait

A secret ballot vote conducted Thursday by the 11 members of the Pennsylvania Democratic congressional delegation resulted in U.S. Rep. Patrick J. Murphy, of Bristol, Bucks County, being recommended for a seat on the committee. The House Democratic Steering Committee will have the final say and could accept that recommendation or opt to choose someone else, even from another state.

The vacancy opened up in February when U.S. Rep John Murtha, D-Johnstown, died. Murtha, the dean of Pennsylvania congressmen, sat on the appropriations committee. Don Sherwood and Joe McDade, who represented the 10th district before Carney, both sat on the committee that’s responsible for setting the specific expenditures of money by the government of the United States.

Carney, of Dimock Township, expressed his interest in the seat. So too did Murphy, who attended King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, and Erie Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper.

The final tally, according to Abbie McDonough, spokeswoman for U.S. Rep. Paul E. Kanjorski, was 6-4-1. She declined to say who voted for whom.

She declined to say how her boss voted. She would only say that “it was a secret ballot that was taken. So no one would know how the congressman voted, myself included.” A request to speak to Kanjorski was not immediately accepted.

A congressional source said that six votes went to Murphy, four to Carney and one for Dahlkemper. The source, whose name is being withheld because the person is not authorized to talk about the topic, said Murphy received the votes of four Philadelphia area House members, his own vote and the vote of Kanjorski, D-Nanticoke, who is the most senior member of the delegation now that Murtha has died.

Carney received the votes, according to the source, of Tim Holden, of St. Clair; Jason Altmire, of North Hills; and Mike Doyle, of Forest Hills, in addition to writing his own name. Dahlkemper cast a vote for herself and received no other votes.

Without Kanjorski’s vote there would have been a 5-5 tie and the deciding vote would have been taken with Dahlkemper’s name taken out of consideration.

The apparent lack of support from Carney’s fellow Northeastern Pennsylvania representative drew the ire of the campaign spokesman for Kanjorski’s opponent in the upcoming Democratic May primary, Corey O’Brien, of Moosic.

Justin Carroll called Kanjorski apparent vote a “betrayal” and said without a Northeastern Pennsylvania House member of the committee, “that decision could cost our region millions of dollars in lost opportunities.”

“Our opponent knows the power that comes with a seat on the Appropriations Committee, but he chose to support a representative from the Philadelphia suburbs over his fellow northeasterner,” Carroll said. “Even though Congressman Carney and our opponent share Lackawanna and Luzerne counties, our opponent would rather play insider politics than put the needs of our region first. To deny our region a voice on the Appropriations Committee when we need it the most is a public affront to the people of our region.”

U.S. Rep. Chaka Fatta, of Philadelphia, is Pennsylvania’s only Democrat currently on the Appropriations Committee.

Josh Drobnyk, a spokesman for Carney, declined comment and said his boss had no comment.

There is no such thing as a BLUE DOG dem as there is no such thing as a PRO LIFE DEM. The democrat party has sold it’s soul to the devil, who is a hard core socialist.

Gotta love it when they eat thier own.

The statement that it would cost the regions millions is fairly indicative of what Congress has become: forget the rest of the country, What’s In It For Me (WIFFM).

Carney knew when he took office how he would vote on this. He’s played his conservative district for suckers.

And Carney can thank his Republican predecessor, Don Sherwood, for the ease of getting into office. Elections AND immoral/unethical behavior all have consequences. http://www.freerepublic.com/tag/donsherwood/index?tab=articles

Ditto. Note most of the post Obamacare violence was directed at blue dogs. Atleast the liberal Dems were upfront with their viewpoints, so the voters know what they will get. The blue dogs ran on the theme that they were not liberal, they were independent and will not succumb to pressures from ultra liberal Dems. Obamacare vote proved them to be otherwise. Finally, the politicians in Wash DC do not get it. Blue collar voters are sick of being lied to and screwed by politicians who say they are for the working man and Main Street Americans and do otherwise during crunch time. Starting from NAFTA, WTO, Amnesty for Illegals, Bailout for Banks and now Obamacare, Main Street voters had it with Wash DC and more with local lying Congressmen. This is going to lead to inevitable violence, because on each of the subject laws, the majority of American opposed to it while their reps ignored their desires. In a prosperous economy, disgruntle voters can cut some slack, but with high unemployment, broken pension funds and financial uncertainty, patience has run out and anger has risened. This time it will be different. Voters will not take the crap anymore.
