Comet trail may have caused last ice age - UPI.com

CARDIFF, England, April 2 (UPI) -- A thousand-year freeze that began in 11,000 B.C. may have been caused by thousands of atomic-force chunks from a disintegrating comet, a British scientist said. The fragments, each hitting with the force of a 1-megaton nuclear bomb, triggered fires that covered whole continents and filled the atmosphere with smoke and soot that blotted out the sun, said Bill Napier, a professor at Cardiff University Astrobiology Center.

Napier said Earth may have strayed into a dense trail of fragments being shed by a large comet.  The resulting freeze caused glaciers to advance, disrupted human cultures and wiped out an estimated 35 families of North American mammals, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

There is "compelling evidence" the main comet has been breaking apart ever since, leading to meteor streams known as the Taurid Complex, Napier wrote in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The Basic Fundamentals of global warming and cooling are ignored.

It seems that since Al Gore's fall from grace, climate-gate and the Germans falling off the wagon, the science world is trying to fill the void with more garbage and with the media's aid.

Now we have England backing up their scientists as if there was no wrong. Our present administration is bent on following their agenda and ignoring science as well.

Oops!

The present sunspot rate in the third year is not enough to support global warming.

Sincerely,

Paul Pierett

I thought that when we put stuff into the atmosphere it caused warming...I am soooo confused now...

Well we need to warm up the planet as much as possible just in case this happens again.

Save the earth! Warm it up!

I thought they just figured out that it was something else.

Wow, before you know it, they may just have to think "God"....

If that coment comes back again, will Obama hand out free SUVs to everyone to save us from hibernation?

This is a very dubious theory, at best. This simplest reason is that the scale of a comet is dwarfed by the size of the Earth.

To give an idea of the scale, the Tunguska event, believed to be an airburst comet over Siberia, produced an explosion of between 5 and 30 Megatons of TNT (*). It flattened trees over about an 830 square mile area, but only burned a fraction of those. And had it landed at sea, unless it was near a coast, or observed by a ship, it probably would have gone unnoticed before the age of Earth observation satellites.

(*) The largest nuclear bomb ever detonated, the Tsar Bomba, was about 100 Megatons, or three times as large.

Now, *assuming* that the alleged comet broke up in such a way that it would come in over the northern hemisphere, which has more forest, and more land (60% water/40% land) than the southern hemisphere, it would still likely leave most forest land untouched. Only half the land, 20% of the total northern hemisphere, was covered by forest at its peak.

In other words, every four of five airburst comet chunks would do little or nothing, even if coming in at the optimal direction. Those that made it through might have knocked down trees, but not burned that many of them.

Two or three big volcanic eruptions in a year would likely do more.

There were a bunch of postings on this conjecture and every one of them offers the supposition that the earth entered a path of of a disintegrating comet but offers nothing furthur.

Such as; OK this thing was here eons ago travelling in this orbit the earth was here moving this way and wham snowdown at intersection X occured. Also there should be some residue of some element which could be attributed to such an unearthly body generally distributed around the earth which could be attributed to that era.

In one sense, I wish that folks would just quit posting all this junk science crap here, but I suppose we do need to keep abreast of the situation as it looks like obama is going to "deem" global warming into existence.

I never believed the lies about global warming, for a couple of reasons: 1. they came from the left, and 2. they were tied directly to regulation and more taxation from the beginning.

I regularly check the 10-day forcast, and that is about as far forward as i care about concerning "climate".

The weather is warmer now, and the global warming medianuts are coming out of the woodwork, but it's called "Spring"...not the end of mankind. I hate to see what they'll be wailing when "Summer" gets here.

These people watch too many "disaster" movies and seem to have a big desire for something to destroy mankind. I get a laugh out of the new TV series, "Life After Humans"...so nature takes back over in a big way and all of our worldly accomplishements crumble...wow. What did they think would happen?

The series ironically proves something, that contrary to what the environuts claim, nature will always rebound and survive, and there's not an SUV made that will stop that.

Just a few days ago, they had this mini-cool-down being caused by water flowing uphill.

Let's just stick to factual evidence and end all of this illogical speculation.

This material is actually getting published by Nature and the Royal Astronomical Society.

What caused the Younger Dryas event? Well, it happened more than 19 different times in the last ice age so it is probably just a natural feedback cycle. There is no need to invoke a miracle.
