Very interesting!!! I can believe these things are happening because of global arrogance and rebellion against God and His people. I heard a geologist say that this was a normal year for earthquakes, I think he was talking about the number and the size. What I find interesting is how many big ones are happening in populated areas. In the Utah area they say that the 4.9 earthquake the other day may have more to do with volcanic activity underground in Yellowstone Park. If that area ever blows the whole country will be in trouble. It's a super volcano, that's what they call it. It'll make Mt. St. Helen look like a hiccup. Link Yellowstone super volcano information

One reason why farmers still plow fields and plant crops near volcanoes is that volcanic soils offers an excellent growing medium. That explains all those farms near active volcanoes in Mexico—despite the obvious danger!

"This is (was?) Iceland's most fertile farmland"

And will be even more so, if I remember HS AP Biology correctly...that volcanic ash makes great fertilizer.

This is what the West and Midwest will look like if Yellowstone ever goes postal.

Rejaillir le feu
D’un ancien volcan
Qu’on croyait trop vieux
Il est paraît-il
Des terres brûlées
Donnant plus de blé...

— Jacques Brel, “Ne Me Quitte Pas”

(Loosely, it means the lands burned by the volcano thought too old to erupt, produce a better crop than that of springtime.)

Guess what country is going to need help. No crops? Live stock?
But it really is a lesson on just how powerful nature is.
It can bring humans to their knees in no time.

the disruption continues ... Sainted Spouse had dental appointment this morning, follow up to oral surgery 2 weeks ago. Gets there. Doc is stranded in Europe. Just one small little meaningless result of the volcano.

APOD had a pretty cool one yesterday. I'll keep my eye open for others.

Here's my favorite lightning clip. It sends out little tendrils to look for the ground. The first one that finds it wins; the bolt takes that path.

Has nothing to do with volcanoes, but can't resist posting it.

Thanks, I saw and downloaded that one. I saw a couple of pictures of a Chilean volcanic eruption that looked similar to the APOD.

I don't think I've seen that one before. I really like it. It's great that it was made into an animated GIF file, which allows it to be posted here.
