Indianapolis - A man was shot and killed as he reportedly tried to rob an apartment on the near north side Sunday afternoon.

Metro police officers responded to a report of a person shot at an apartment building at 1503 N. Pennsylvania Street around 4 p.m. Sunday. When they arrived, they found an unidentified male lying in the third floor hallway with multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

The 24-year-old shooter told police he and his girlfriend were helping another friend move into an apartment when they were approached by the shooting victim, who was asking for change for a five dollar bill. One of the men said they had change in the apartment.

As they walked into the building, the shooting victim pulled out a gun and ordered everyone into the back room. The shooter said he feared for their lives, so while walking to the back area of the apartment, he pulled out a gun he was carrying, turned and fired at the would be robber. It is unknown if the shooting victim fired any shots.

Police say the shooter had a permit to carry a handgun. He and the two other victims of the apparent attempted robbery were taken in for interviews and to give statements to police. No arrests have been made at this time.

"It appears, based on preliminary information, to have been a case of self-defense," IMPD Sgt. Matt Mount wrote in a release.

The would-be robber has not yet been identified, but police say he was wearing an ankle bracelet consistent with those issued for home detention.

Lesson here, you never know when you might need it and you won’t have much time.

Not sure I see where the CCW comes in though. He was on private property.

He just wanted to make sure they didn’t short-change him.

Whenever bums ask me for anything like this, I tell them to back the **** off. You never know which one is wearing an ankle bracelet, if you know what I mean. This perp might not have looked like a bum though. So perhaps my system isn’t as foolproof as I thought.

I think the CCW reference validates the shooter .. ie ... not a felon, passed the background, etc.

...they were approached by the shooting victim

I would prefer "unsuccessful criminal" myself. Picayune, I know. Good story.

“Whenever bums ask me for anything like this, I tell them to back the **** off. “

You’re too confrontational.

Whenever I need to walk thru a bum paradise, I clip coupons. Then when asked for change, the bum gets a Betty Crocker cake coupon or 50¢ off a case of Tampax. I’m 100 yards downwind before Mr. Bum realizes what he has, and I can barely hear the swearing.

Well that parole worked out really swell.

  1. Not supposed to leave his 'house' -- he did.
  2. Not supposed to have a firearm -- he did.
  3. Not supposed to commit any 'more' crimes -- he did.

Officials should find out who the brainiacs were that decided this mutt should be put back on the streets.

On second thought, forget that. The dopes would prolly get a promotion.

“I think the CCW reference validates the shooter .. ie ... not a felon, passed the background, etc.”

The CCW is turning into a license to own and possess a firearm. The shooter doesn’t really need to validate anything in the press. He doesn’t really need to validate anything to the cops beyond he was attacked with deadly force and responded appropriately.

The story should read something like - Man and his girlfriend are helping their friends move, they are approached by another man who pulls a gun and threatens them. One of the movers uses a firearm to remove the threat, firing several accurate shots hitting the target center mass. The alleged kidnapper, thief was found to have an ankle bracelet for home detention and a criminal background. The alleged criminal died at the scene.

It is called training and accessiblity to your firearm when you need it.

Yes, I caught that. “Shooting victim”, as opposed to worthless predatory POS that got a fatal dose of what he had coming to him.

none of which require a CCW on private property.

I misunderstood your statement regarding not getting the CCW reference.

In the letter of the law, I'm not allowed to carry ... but I carry.

Love it. I should probably just say "ask Obama. He's got all my money now."

Well, the 'jewelry' didn't keep the perp from committing more crime, but a well armed citizen sure did!

I love a happy ending!!!
